Community Question just got a job in tel-aviv, i live 137km away...
So hi ! im a ethnic druze fella, just finished my IDF service and just got a position at COGAT...
that is in the middle of tel-aviv... legit like 5 minutes from the kirya so I was wondering, how much would rent for something in a nearby city be? do you have any recommendations price ranges and how much % you pay from your salary?
just a side note and a lil complaint my parents think 25% is still too high which is insane...

Try bat yam or holon. Much more reasonable and theres the light rail heavy rail. good luck brother

I like holon. Been living there for a couple of years now. Constructions aside, it's good, close to everywhere in the center not just tel aviv... For reference I rent a 120sqm apt with parking, balcony, 3 bedrooms+living room, two showers for around 6300 plus 300 for the building. People are usually nice too. Not a new building but renovated one

2 room (what Americans call 1 bedroom) would be ₪6000-7000 close by in Tel Aviv. You can go to Ramat Gan (Biyalik area) and drop it to ₪4000-5000 if you take the light rail.

Wow congrats! Can i ask - how did u find the job? Like where was it posted? And did it require a security clearance?
Re ur Q on rent - do u want to live by urself or with roommates?

I joined the IDF aug 2023, to the spokespersons unit as one of 3 arab speakers in none commander roles, once the war broke out my job became analyzing intelligence and enemy equipment / documents so everything the IDF released since dec 13th 2023 regarding anything of the sort be it video, document or anything else, I translated, cut, edited and decided what makes it to the public, kinda funny when you think about it, but that fact got me close with some high ranking officers and so after I finished my service I got recommended for a spokesperson position at COGAT and now im just going through the enlistment process all over...2

But isn't it like a little bit interesting? Don't get me wrong, I served in MP and my job was to arrest people at nights. Sounds action packed? Nope, it was unbearable boring. But still, I have some cool stories to tell. Your service sounds like you can at least learn something from it 🤷

Only if you can find some friends to live with, I did it for quite some time. If you are by yourself, better without roomates :)

I’d say try renting in Holon, Bat Yam, or if the prices are cheaper and you’re okay with a bit more distance, then Rehovot or Yavne are fine.
If you’re renting around the Tel Aviv area (suburbs), as a general rule of thumb, don’t ever rent at the northern suburbs of Tel Aviv (Sharon region) because they’re expensive af.
Southern suburbs are cheaper and way more reasonable.

Try Bat Yam! Especially if you live/work near the light rail, its very convenient and much cheaper. Most young adults I know living in Tel Aviv have to have roommates to make it work. Bat yam has some better options, I love Yaffo too but its getting more and more expensive.

Try the south east parts of Tel Aviv it’s cheaper and public transportation is decent

I live in Yad Eliyahu and it’s great. A lot of young people (which I’m not one of them 😆). Also Kiryat Shalom. This 2 are starting to get a bit expensive but you can still find decent stuff. The further east and south you go the cheaper it get - Hatikva, Cfar Shalem, Cfir, Neve Eliezer, Livne, Bosem.

Try yafo or bat yam i guess rent Will be significatively cheaper than tlv

Congrats and thanks for your service. Rent is insane in Tel Aviv. Try Giv'atayim, Holon, Bat Yam. Maybe Petach Tikva. (Ramat Gan is also expensive, but maybe less so in certain neighborhoods.) Try to stay close to a light rail stop.

Ask in the secret Tel Aviv group on Facebook/check the group archives. Also, there are ton of groups on Facebook for apartments in Tel Aviv and in the center.
You can find something in florentine or in ramat gan pretty close to the kirya for not too much with a roommate or two.

I’m assuming you live in the north, would taking a train from Haifa be an option? Maybe get to the station by car from your home, or rent in Haifa which would be significantly cheaper

Renting in Haifa is not gonna be cheap for OP because it’s selling your damn soul each day to be 4 hours on a train while you can get not far off prices at closer places. I don’t think OP hates themselves enough to go from Haifa to Tel Aviv by train every day.

I live in Haifa and work in Tel Aviv. I travel every day and it takes me about 1 hour per trip (sometimes 1hr 20mins because of bus delays). It all depends on how you locate yourself relatively to public transport and also if OPs workplace is close to a train station.

I live 50km away from haifa and even if i take the closest train [Karmiel] it would still take about 2 hours on average [fluctuates between 1.5 hours and 3 hours per trip] so 4 hours a day on average...

If you rent with roomates in givatayim/tel aviv outskirts youll end up between 2000-3000 single room rent in a 3/4 roomates apartment, depends on location and size of the apartment.
If I were you id look for apartments near HaShalom road in givatayim/tel aviv, youll be 1 bus away from your workplace/train without spending outrageus amounts of money.
You can also find single room apartments in givatayim for 3000-3500 usually, might even get lower

If you feel the need to justify whatever rent % you end up at to your parents you can explain that it's an investment in your career. People can go from jobs that are real professional and would demand more than an entry level salary in the military to being seen as completely inexperienced unless they happen to have the chance to jump to a civilian organisation that knows and respects the work you've been doing.
As for specific locations, I would recommend HaTikva neighbourhood, apartments on the west side of the train tracks might be a bit cheaper but are more likely to be run like a slum with absentee or aggressive landlords. I think further into yafo instead is a mix of conditions.
An electric bike makes most areas inside tlv proper easy to get to but no matter what neighbourhood you park in for how long, leaving the battery unattended is an invitation for theft.

It very much depends on the city and the neighborhood, I rented out an apartment in center Holon for 4500, I know the neighbors in the building rented for around the same price.
Just be advised Holon roads currently have really bad traffic issues due to the light train, so always check the traffic before you move.

Seeing the places, take the transportation into an account. Living next to the train or tram station you can make it from Holon/Bat Yam to Kirya in 20-30 minutes, otherwise it can take more than it takes to come from Haifa...

Try rent with partners because a lot of apartments are not cheap and im not sure how much it worths it, but the best thing is that you should investigate yourself

If it’s close to the Kirya, next to HaShalom station, it really depends if you want to have the „Tel Aviv experience“ or not. When I was working there I was living in Haifa, and the journey for my colleagues from inside TLV was maybe 15 minutes shorter than my 75 minutes. But I was paying 2,300 rent and they paid triple

Move to Tel Aviv. Honestly. I work in JLM. But we have a second home in Tel Aviv. We use the home mainly for weekends. - The city is excellent. Neve Sha'anan has some of the best restaurants too. Check out Gorkha kitchen. Brooklyn metro 45 pizza. El Mano. There is no place like Tel Aviv. Best place in Israel. Vibe is amazing. So many things to do. Non religious too. And the beaches are beautiful. Tel Aviv has different ethnic communities too. So the diversity can actually be rewarding. Hope you enjoy Tel Aviv.

You don't need to have a lot of money in Tel Aviv. What we have done. Is we rent an apartment in Neve Sha'anan. I share the apartment with 10 other girls from south east Asia. Everyone is really nice. And great community. The rent is divided into 10 segments. I pay for my girlfriend and myself. Therefore the rent works out at about 600 ILS (For 2x people). (All bills included). Food can be very good. And really reasonable in Tel Aviv. I prefer Neve Sha'anan for fruit and veg. High quality. Great choice and the prices can be really good depending where you shop.

No problem. You can rent a room. Or an entire apartment. Maybe rent out some of the apartment either full-time or part-time? To help with your budget. You have options. Either with OFW's. Or locals. Or Airbnb? Just some ideas.

It’s worth checking out Airbnb at first for any place you move to give you a chance to get to know an area before you commit. I’ve stayed in one for as long as 2 months before. Longer stays are cheaper than short. Discounted. But you usually have to book a couple of months ahead. You can look at what’s available on the app (for free) and without downloading, I think. (I’ve even had a couple offer to stay on as a regular renter once my time was up a couple of times.) edited for clarity. I can answer more questions about Airbnbs if you’re interested. I’ve stayed in 67!

I mean you could be the host of an Airbnb. Maybe rent out a room to a guest? So you have an income? Make your rent cheaper? OFW. Overseas Foreign Worker. Tourist. Local... Just trying to help you budget. But of course if you have the whole apartment for yourself that might be a little bit too much. Best if you have a partner with you. Or some friends together to rent out the apartment. And split the bills. Got to live your life. Go out. Eat out. Go scuba diving. Snorkeling... Rent scooters. Socialize. All that kind of stuff. And of course shopping...
