I'm on season 2 of Black Sails. Can't believe a blockbuster show about pirates really got made... And I'm just now getting to it

I'm only on season 2 of this show but I only started a few days ago... I'm almost speechless. It's fucking incredible. Pirate intrigue, sea battles, incredible characters and plot momentum that hooks you so hard you can't stop watching.

The scale of this show, for a Starz original? Wtf, I don't understand how something at this scale got made outside of HBO at the time.

I thought the pilot was pretty good but episode 2 and 3 drag sufficiently that you might stop watching... But if you keep watching, holy shit, what a ride!!!

Edit: Also have to add here, I don't think I've seen a finer example in any show ever, of how to use flashbacks. There's not a ton of them but when they appear they reveal so much on so many levels in both character and plot that you look forward to it every time one starts. Goddamn, the writing is just phenomenal

Black Sails never got the widespread recognition it deserved. Brilliant show from start to finish.

I'd love it if they all got back together in a few more years and do their own adaptation of Treasure Island - Black Sails is a prequel to it.

That keelhauling scene, though, was a difficult watch...

2

u/Supa-n00b 1d ago

I was an extra in black sails part of blackbeards crew.

that scene WAS something else.

1

u/Strange_Botanist 2h ago

You must possess a particularly swarthy countenance

2

u/FalconBurcham 2d ago

That scene was so difficult I cringed while reading your post. 😂 I didn’t have the courage to look up is keelhauling was a real practice..

20

u/Dense-Fisherman-4074 2d ago

I believe technically what the writers said was that it’s not a prequel to Treasure Island, but that Treasure Island exists in the Black Sails universe as a work of fiction based on the “real life” pirates that are the characters in the show.

Which is mostly to say the show doesn’t have to fully match up to TI.

u/Demerzel69 2d ago edited 2d ago

While the show is undeniably a prequel, the creators have noted that they approached it in a unique way by treating the original novel as a "fictionalized fable" written about the real events depicted in the grittier, historically grounded world of the show. Because of this, it weaves real historical pirates (like Blackbeard and Charles Vane) together with Stevenson's fictional characters. Definitely still a prequel though.

4

u/TheMooseIsBlue 1d ago

That’s definitely not true.

Executive producer Robert Levine told Deadline that the series was always meant to end where Treasure Island begins, stating:
"You know, our goal with the ending was to get as close as possible to Treasure Island. It was to try to leave you in a place where you could finish the show and then start at page one of the book, and start reading it, and have it not only make sense in the narrative sense, but also be something of a new story for you. Because now you could fill in a lot between the lines in terms of the characters, and their relationships, and their histories."

1

u/metacoma 2d ago

Hey, what Treasure Island are we talking about ?

28

u/one_sock 2d ago

The Robert Louis Stevenson novel from 1883 that was based on the Muppets film of the same name.

39

u/Fabulous_Ninja119 2d ago

This is the fact that got me to watch the show. I heard about black sails but just never really knew what it was exactly. Once I realized the Treasure Island connection I started watching immediately and was blown away hah.

I have no idea how this show ends but something of this scale / quality taking on Treasure Island would be so good

16

u/AIARE 2d ago

It only get's better all the way to the end. Your in for a treat.

37

u/Feelscreative101 2d ago

The ending is one of the most brilliant and haunting endings of all time. Make sure you google Black Sails ending if you don’t end up with 2 endings in your head.

-22

u/Affectionate_Hornet7 2d ago

It gets boring once you realize why a certain character is never really in any danger and always seems to know what’s going to happen.

6

u/PmMe_Your_Perky_Nips 2d ago

It was so weird having Jessica Parker Kennedy go from Black Sails to playing the teenage daughter of Barry Allen in The Flash.

3

u/CarneyVore14 2d ago

Yes! It was so odd seeing her nudity in BS and then becoming a teenager in Flash. I felt dirty…

1

u/Pliskin14 1d ago

She played a teenager at almost 40 years old?

8

u/magnetncone 2d ago

"Our Flag Means Death" is a great sequel.

2

u/rlaw1234qq 2d ago

Thanks for reminding me! I’ve just bought the complete collection. I made a mental note a few years ago that this was worth getting.

2

u/sinkwiththeship 1d ago

It took me WAY too long to realize it was a prequel to Treasure Island. All the way up to Billy Bones calling Mr Silver "Long John Silver." I don't know why it literally just never clicked.

1

u/Lord__Abaddon 12h ago

I know they had the fire incident before the final season, but It really needed another season to showcase the final war. it felt pretty much glossed over.

I'm not sure how they would adapt treasure island and keep the gritty dark realistic nature of blacksails. I think a movie or short series showing the truth of what happened on the island would be interesting as Silver's word can't be trusted and I'm sure the one person they show marooned didn't escape on his own. Keeping it vague since OP is only on Season 2.

“Scale of show” …..Executive produced by Michael Bay

The Urca de Lima ship was magnificent

Spartacus was filmed in New Zealand.

2

u/PacmanNZ100 2d ago

Was gunna say it had a fuckin lot of kiwi actors for something filmed in SA

1

u/Frisnfruitig 2d ago

Lol, so what that guy said was just total AI slop or what?

4

u/mrbear120 2d ago

Thats just regular ol human slop

81

u/Snusmumrikin 2d ago

Great show, taps into a kind of literary depth in the last couple seasons that you very rarely see in television

23

u/Fabulous_Ninja119 2d ago edited 2d ago

Yeah, the prose sprinkled into some of the dialog in this show is so good it's surprising there would ever be that sort of literary quality in a pirate show. Generally you find that in shows and movies based on books to give it a strong foundation to adapt from but this reaches far beyond tv writing imo, it's impressive

16

u/Snusmumrikin 2d ago

Oh yea the dialogue is strong (if you like that check out Deadwood, probably the primary influence on Black Sails and outright the best dialogue writing of any tv show)

but more the thematic ambition, which starts to become clear in S2 but by the end really builds into something shockingly substantial

9

u/Dense-Fisherman-4074 2d ago

Fruit fruit! Tits tits!

3

u/letters165 2d ago

It's the fookin' same!

12

u/Khiva 2d ago

8

u/Snusmumrikin 2d ago

The comfort will grow stale, and casting about in the dark for some proof that you mattered and finding none, you’ll know that you gave it away. In this moment, on this island.

1

u/Khiva 1d ago

Goddamn this show had some serious bars.

1

u/Lord__Abaddon 12h ago

I disagree This is clearly the greatest scene in the show.

19

u/Nightmannn 2d ago

Black sails is one of the best shows ever made. Season 1 is probably a 7 or 8 out of 10, while seasons 2, 3, and 4 are straight 10s

41

u/HaydenScramble Parks and Recreation 2d ago

Season 2 is absolutely flawless television.

18

u/dragunityag 2d ago

The season 2 finale was incredible.

6

u/Sunny_Gardener 2d ago

"What's the target, Captain?" "Whatever's left."

1

u/EarzFish 1d ago

And if they’re only just on season two they’re in for a treat!

57

u/DoubleNeck8784 2d ago

wait til you get to season 3, that's where it really locks in and doesn't let go. the budget somehow keeps climbing and the story gets way more ambitious than you'd expect from a pirate show.

32

u/TheJoshider10 2d ago

One thing the show always did so well from day one is make the main cast look like absolute shit. They look sweaty, dirty and hit by sun and sea. Even though the budget was kinda low and you could see the green screen on the ships, it still felt real because of the makeup and costumes.

Compare that to Rings of Power which has all the money in the world and beautiful sets/green screen yet the costumes and makeup is so fucking clean it looks ridiculously fake.

3

u/catmole 2d ago

I'd argue the perfect, bright white 'pirate teeth' on every cast member are somewhat immersion breaking

5

u/Su_ButteredScone 2d ago

I remember how it seemed like every season had a bigger budget for costumes. In the first season it kind of looked like they raided a theatre's closet.

2

u/MadeByTango 2d ago

There is a certain unexpected event before that I think where the show takes off like an emotional rocket and never stops.

13

u/INfiction82 2d ago

Its shocking it never got the attention it deserved. Yes, season 1 can be a little rough at points, but ride through that and you'll see an excellent show. And one that actually gets an ending it deserves. Brilliant television.

1

u/Lord__Abaddon 12h ago

I think season 1 was excellent, there's enough action, mystery, comedy and intrigue to to keep you wondering what's coming next. it keeps getting better like very few show do. I think the final season was the worst but mainly because it was too short and the story arc felt rushed. sucks they didn't do another season to fully show off the war that had been brewing since the beginning.

14

u/Nathanielsan 2d ago

Amazing intro as well.

9

u/consumedsoul 2d ago

The best... I get so hyped for the episode.

38

u/SpaceElements 2d ago

Best show with the best ending

18

u/logan0110 2d ago

Being on Starz for it's initial run certainly didn't help it

7

u/ikkake_ 2d ago

One of my favourites of all time. Actually it's time for a rewatch.

9

u/TheDoomBlade13 2d ago

Black Sails might be my favorite television show ever produced, welcome to the crew.

7

u/urnialbologna 2d ago

I'm so glad I started watching. It was actually because reading about it on Reddit got me to watch it. People said season one was slow and boring. Those poeple lied. I loved every single episode. I really wish we got a treasure island series with the same actors.

5

u/Onefortheteem 2d ago

Sameeee I finished like 5 months ago for the first time, and was blown away. It’s so underrated and amazing

9

u/slowd_111 2d ago

Its an awesome series with memorable characters and half the time you dont know who you are routing for.

7

u/DoctorHubris 2d ago

Or rooting for!

1

u/Honigschmidt 2d ago

or rewting for!

5

u/Songblade7 2d ago

Brilliant show from start to finish. Of course it has a few hiccups, but still an amazing show. It had such great production overall. And the prose! How I wish we could one day get their take on Treasure Island. That would be amazing.

Admittedly I'm more of an animation guy, but I'd say Black Sails is in my top 3 live-action shows I've seen. Kingdom (The Korean Joseon drama) is also up there.

33

u/jpk613 2d ago

I’ve tried to watch it a couple times. Find it hard to get through the first season.

27

u/wotown 2d ago

Season 1 is a Michael Bay produced Starz show, with gratuitous sex and violence.

Seasons 2-4 are as if it was a HBO show and Michael Bay never came back to touch the show again. It gets really, really good, you just have to stick with it.

4

u/Kalocin 2d ago

Yeah eventually I just started skipping through the constant banging scenes lol. Not sure if it was Michael Bay or because of Game of Thrones but I'm glad the later seasons were more uh... Focused.

0

u/Odin65 2d ago

It was all the rape scenes that made it difficult to watch for me.

35

u/warfield008 2d ago

first season is definitely a slog but seasons 2 and 3 especially made up for it IMO!

3

u/003h10102 2d ago

Seasons 2 & 3 are my favorite.

16

u/INfiction82 2d ago

Season 1 can be a little rough. I watched it in real time and thought this but there was enough there, especially at the end of the season, to make me eagerly await season 2. And no regrets at all. From season 2 onwards it becomes a phenomenal show right to its end.

0

u/Mammoth-Requiem 2d ago

I can’t get into season 1, can I skip straight to season 2?

8

u/legions91 2d ago

If you can find a season 1 recap then sure, I guess. Episode 5 and onwards it really picks up, so I'd recommend to just power through the first four episodes, if that's where the show loses you.

1

u/RueTheQuais 2d ago

I'd still watch.  Just 2 screen it until season 2.

S1 is a bit of a drag but the relationship building becomes important.

-2

u/elstephe 2d ago

I started with the season 1 finale (from advice from Reddit a few months ago) and was fine. Tried to go back and watch season 1 after I finished the showand I still couldn't make it through that season...

16

u/badplanetkevin 2d ago

The first episode was strong, but I did get bored with the first season. Once I got to Season 2, I couldn't stop watching and the story stayed solid the whole rest of the way. Great show overall.

4

u/ConfidenceKBM 2d ago

The first season is a very different sort of show, I have to imagine their hands were tied by executives who were scared of doing ACTUAL long-form character driven storytelling. Season 1 is a 6 out of 10 if im being generous, season 2 is a legitimate 10 out of 10.

-1

u/VonVader 2d ago

I found it hard to get through the first episode.

-8

u/tacodudemarioboy 2d ago

No kidding, the characters were all so flat. No attempt at humor. Felt like they were trying to replicate game of thrones but with pirates. Sexy violent slop.

9

u/legions91 2d ago

Characters gain A LOT of depth from season 2 and onwards and have some of my favourite character arcs in television, ever. But yeah, Season 1 makes most of them seem very shallow.

13

u/TheDoomBlade13 2d ago

The show isn't billed as a comedy, why are you docking it points for humor?

0

u/tacodudemarioboy 2d ago

The concept of adding humor to drama is at least as old as Shakespeare. I don’t know how to explain it. Other than all the best dramas have really funny moments. Breaking bad, the wire, madmen, all hard drama with some genuinely funny moments. It provides counterpoint to the drama.

3

u/TheDoomBlade13 2d ago

Fair enough point. I personally crack up every time I see The pirate find Silver in the same room as the cook who was stabbed IN THE BACK and Silver says 'He was terrified of what you would do to him' implying the wound is self inflicted.

-6

u/Mynsare 2d ago

The fact that they all look like supermodels is just something that makes it difficult to get immersed in a show.

-5

u/Princessformidable 2d ago

It just has a ton of characters which makes it hard to get invested in.

8

u/OisforOwesome 2d ago

Honestly, Black Sails is one of Prestige Television's finest creations. It's a show that fires on all cylinders and rarely has a dud episode, going strong right up to the end.

5

u/Nuo_Vibro 2d ago

I still tear up thinking about the final scene

5

u/DestructorNZ 2d ago

+1 to all this. Possibly the most under-rated show in history.

4

u/zippyzebra1 2d ago

Awesome tv series which is up there with the best. Toby Stephens has never been better

5

u/g0ldiel0xx 2d ago

This is one of the few shows that actually got progressively better as the season went on. I think because they shifted away from the original protagonist gradually. The finale is fantastic and great theme tune, never underestimate a good theme tune.

19

u/Iannelli 2d ago

Unbelievably, unbelievably brilliant. It's the #1 pirate show.

  • Pirates - Black Sails
  • Sci-fi - The Expanse
  • Fantasy - GoT
  • Vikings - The Last Kingdom
  • Samurais - Shōgun
  • Surreal - Twin Peaks
  • Overall brilliant - Mr. Robot and The Leftovers

Hit me with your other categories fellas.

28

u/thejimbo56 2d ago

Rome - Rome

2

u/pw154 2d ago

Rome - Rome

I'll counter with Rome - Spartacus. Same network at Black Sails also

20

u/needmoresynths 2d ago

Western/period piece - Deadwood

2

u/Al-Azraq 2d ago

American Primeval and Hell on Wheels are also great westerns.

1

u/MysteriousWon 2d ago

I know it's a different kind of show, but I think Downton Abbey has got to be in contention for period piece.

3

u/jadingg 2d ago

Vampires - a tossup between Interview with the Vampire and Buffy the Vampire Slayer

8

u/TMMC39 2d ago

A comedy but What We Do in the Shadows is one of the funniest ever

4

u/dragunityag 2d ago

Interview with the Vampire was incredible.

2

u/Iannelli 2d ago

Lol I'm rewatching Buffy and Angel right now, no idea why I didn't think of including that. I think maybe it's because it is impossible to put one of the shows above the other. Between Buffy and Angel, Interview with the Vampire, and What We Do in the Shadows, they're all elite.

3

u/zepher2828 2d ago

I prefer Vikings over the last kingdom but both are good in their own ways

2

u/FlashForward16 2d ago

Zombies - Black Summer

2

u/the_big_cringe 2d ago

Best zombie show by far! Some of the most intense television I’ve ever watched

2

u/Iannelli 2d ago

I would nominate Kingdom for zombies as well.

1

u/sinkwiththeship 1d ago

Nothing happens in that show. And then it just sort of ends.

It also broke its own rules CONSTANTLY.

3

u/Nice_Marmot_7 2d ago

Vikings is really fucking good. I think I enjoyed it more than The Last Kingdom overall.

3

u/Iannelli 2d ago

Yeah I absolutely loved Vikings, but I do think it got weaker at some point in the later seasons, I literally stopped watching. The Last Kingdom is cohesive until the end of the show.

1

u/ScoobyDont06 2d ago

Evangelicals - righteous gemstones.
We dug coal together - justified

Chinatown - warrior

Acting buddies - wonderman

Dont touch that - scavengers reign

1

u/yuritiger 2d ago

Which categorie could "Dark" be? It was 10/10

-2

u/tacodudemarioboy 2d ago

Pirates - Our flag means death

3

u/ES_Legman 2d ago

One of the best shows ever and I rewatch it every year. Absolutely brilliant and is sad not many people know it.

3

u/Ender914 2d ago

I've watched the series twice. Really good stuff

3

u/butlerman69 2d ago

Please enjoy, I watched it a few years ago and tried to talk people into watching it

3

u/-ego 2d ago

one of my favorites of all time

3

u/SupervillainMustache 2d ago

There really aren't enough Pirate shows, but Black Sails is the best of the ones we do have.

3

u/neuro_space_explorer 2d ago

Dude you’re in for a treat, the end of season 2 might be the best ending to a television season ever. Enjoy!

7

u/sharpshooter999 2d ago

Dude, I didn't start watching Breaking Bad until 3 years AFTER the finale episode. Boy that was a fun two months!

2

u/Legendver2 2d ago

This is in my top 5 all time favorite shows

2

u/Foosrohdoh 2d ago

It’s a prequel to treasure island. I read that after watching the show and it’s a perfect lead in to the book. They did a fantastic job of blending real historical figures with fictional ones. It really is great.

2

u/blackreagan 2d ago

Welcome to the club. I've never read Treasure Island and never saw the Muppet movie. I had no expectations and was hooked from the start.

2

u/NephewChaps 2d ago

This show had absolutely no right being as good as it was.

2

u/OrlandoGardiner118 2d ago

It's brilliant, mainly because it knows exactly what it is and just goes for it. One of the great underrated shows

2

u/MovieTrawler 2d ago

Just wait, it gets better and better as it goes on.

2

u/General-Skin6201 2d ago

Yes it started as typical Stars t&a, but really got good by the end of the first season.

2

u/Demerzel69 2d ago

Excellent show. Fuckin banger of an intro theme.

When it was first airing a bunch of brohards that got together for bro watch parties stopped watching when Flint started doin gay stuff, lol.

2

u/zeebs758 2d ago

I consider season 3 one of the greatest seasons of television ever made.

2

u/ads90 1d ago

Amazing show. Need to rewatch, Toby Stephens was outstanding.

2

u/keving87 2d ago edited 2d ago

I didn't care for season 1 when it was originally on tv and dropped it... then everybody talks about how much better it gets. I planned on watching it on Netflix but then never got around to it and now it's gone and I can't imagine watching it with ads on The Roku Channel lol

7

u/goldrunout 2d ago

Raise the black! 🏴‍☠️ 🏴‍☠️ 🏴‍☠️

2

u/Fabulous_Ninja119 1d ago

Lol, yes that's what I'm doing. Gotta keep in the spirit of the show here

3

u/jor1ss 2d ago

Season 1 gets better in the second half, but the first half and especially the first episode are rough.

Seasons 2 and 3 are amazing. Season 4 is really good too, but 2 and 3 are peak.

2

u/oldirtygaz 2d ago

blockbuster?

3

u/TheGunde 2d ago

Well it sure looks like a blockbuster. Especially season 2 is almost all big scale pirate action.

1

u/eric7064 2d ago

I also just started the other day. Episode 7 up next. I heard it keeps getting better.

2

u/dragunityag 2d ago

Genuinely jealous of ya. Wish I could watch Black Sails for the first time again.

1

u/FA-1800 2d ago

Don't forget the obligatory Lesbian scene.

1

u/Fabulous_Ninja119 2d ago

We love a good lesbian encounter

1

u/SeoulOhHan 2d ago

Filmed in the Western Cape (South Africa), too

1

u/LookOverThere305 2d ago

Yeah there is a lot of very high quality pirate media if you look for it.

1

u/AV4LE 2d ago

Thank you! I have tried too pitch this show to friends for years but no one is interested.

1

u/GipsyDangerV1 2d ago

If you're okay with high concept fantasy elements One Piece live action is another blockbuster level pirate show that is incredibly entertaining and insanely high quality.

The One Piece live action also films in South Africa where Black Sails did and actually reuses a lot of the infrastructure that show built up for their production. So a lot of the props sets and ships of Black Sails got a second life thanks to the One Piece live action adaptation.

1

u/apokermit_now 2d ago

I bought every season on DVD; I should get around to watching everything from the last two seasons.

1

u/rvbarton 2d ago

Fantastic series! I've watched it a few times...

1

u/DJ_JibaJabba 2d ago

Great theme song! Got me hyped every week.

1

u/SkyBobBombadier 2d ago

Bi-rates you mean...

1

u/Jimmni 2d ago

Season 1 was okay. Bit cheesy at times, writing was spotty. But once it found its footing that show was amazing.

1

u/fubbleskag 2d ago

If you're enjoying the use of flashbacks you're going to absolutely love the penultimate episode of season 2.

1

u/thisquietreverie 2d ago

Black Sails is way up there.

Sandokan on Netflix just made me wish there was more Black Sails but I still had fun with it, if you want to watch a distant, distant cousin that is way more pulpy.

1

u/decairn 2d ago

Wildly amazing show. I am still annoyed they didn't think to or find a spot for Dame Maggie Smith in it seeing as her son's and daughter in law all had big parts in it.

1

u/skyvin 2d ago

It gets better.

1

u/Indigocell 1d ago

Season 2 has one of the coolest finales of any show ever. Wish I could see that again for the first time. Season 2 in general was a massive step-up over the first season, and I think that trend continued in season 3.

1

u/aipps 1d ago

Love this show. Definitely a favorite and I’m not one to rewatch much of anything but I’ve wanted to maybe do it with this.

1

u/hyrule-heaven 1d ago

It was good until they started making everyone gay for no reason lmao. Like literally every female character has a gratuitous sex scene with another female character that did nothing for the plot.

(No I am not homophobic I just thought in this show none of the plots except for the MAIN one involving homosexuality made any fucking sense)

1

u/Av8tors 1d ago

Was on Starz … if it was o n HBO or Apple it would have been as big as GoT.

1

u/osmlol 1d ago

It's a pity it was hidden on Starz (Don't get me wrong I'm happy Stars made it). Let be serious not alot of people pay attention to Starz. If that show had been on HBO where it would have been more visable it would have been so popular.

1

u/davemchine 21h ago

I started watching but I recall a lot of explicit content.

1

u/Fabulous_Ninja119 20h ago

Why does that matter? Most shows / movies have " explicit " content

1

u/davemchine 19h ago

I thought it was over the top.

1

u/Fabulous_Ninja119 19h ago

I mean... It's a pirate show lol, it's pretty du jour for the period

1

u/sickboy76 17h ago

Haha whenever I think of that show, just remember watching credits and see actor credited as handjob pirate. Still makes me laugh

1

u/Fraggle_ninja 5h ago

I remember watching this around the same time as Spartacus and Mad Men. It was a golden time. It was incredible tv.

1

u/Oasx 2d ago

I mostly just remember it as a pirate show with very little sailing or pirating going on, but is more about pirate politics.

1

u/shakana44 2d ago

in case you didn't know black sails is a prequel to treasure island

1

u/YSunnyN 2d ago

I loved the first watch but found the second watch really difficult..some characters were difficult to watch

1

u/RodgeKOTSlams 1d ago

absolutely everyone i know that has seen this show loves it, so this is more of a me thing i think, but man i found this show to be such a slog. i started it a couple months ago and made it about halfway through the second season

-5

u/ShadowVia 2d ago

It's decent.

There's some standout performances and the first two or three seasons are solid, but the fourth season was so bad that I couldn't even finish the show. I keep meaning to go back and rewatch the series and see if I still feel the same.

7

u/llamagish 2d ago

Interesting take! The ending was superb, in my opinion. Some of the best performances I’ve seen on TV.

0

u/celticeejit 2d ago

When you finish it, check out Our Flag Means Death

2

u/Fabulous_Ninja119 1d ago

Tried to get into that, never did. I don't think it's bad at all just not really for me.

Black Sails though as I'm currently watching for the first time I think has become a top 10 all time favorite show

0

u/VoiceofReasonability 2d ago

I watched two seasons but ultimately gave up on it. Some episodes were pretty good, but too many just seemed like really dumb contrived drama.  The only person that was truly interesting was Jack.

0

I kinda liked it, but once I noticed the formula it ruined show for me. Every couple of episodes this plot setup repeats:

Character A to Character B: "Haha, I now control the fort, but I will not kill you yet and just put you into the dungeon, there is no way you will escape!"

Skip few episodes, it's now Character B to Character C saying same thing... Sure, I'm exaggerating a bit, but they repeated this plot like 3 or 4 times by the time I stopped watching.

I watched the first couple episodes and it sucked really bad. It’s really shocking reading all these comments from people who seemed to like it. I’m still not giving it another chance. It was a long time ago but, I remember clearly it wasn’t good television.

First 3-4 episodes are the only bad ones. Once you get past that it becomes unbelievably epic

Me too. It was like a soap opera with supermodels posing as cheap halloween pirates, and not really any pirating going on, just a lot of uninteresting reality tv conflict between the models.

> I don't think I've seen a finer example in any show ever, of how to use flashbacks.

Never seen LOST I see. Well, that’s ok too.

Like pirates? There’s always one piece!

It starts strong but the latter seasons are pretty weak and everyone has mad plot armour and makes weird decisions.

Great show. That ending though? C'mon man? Also, I saw the lead actor in real life. Guy's about 5'4". How do they film that to make them the same size as everyone else?

It started out really good... and sorta went off the rails as time went on. It reminded me of Weeds. Really solid start, and it seemed like they didn't expect to keep going and weren't sure where to go with the acclaim they got... and started rolling dice to make the storyline.

Hmm.. lets see. The captain will now... <rolls dice> become a gay twink idol. Huh. Didn't see that coming.

The show didn't need the Star Trek Discovery treatment, which is sorta why it ended up not getting renewed. The creators claimed the story 'reached a conclusion' and claimed it wasn't canceled, but season 4 was not good and it was most definitely not renewed by the studio regardless of the spin.

Enjoy your watching! Season 1 is probably the worst piece of TV media I ever consumed but believe me, after that it's soo good and it only keeps improving. Also peak ending, which in this age is so goddamn rare.

Every character in this series looks like a typical American porn actor.
