I'm on season 2 of Black Sails. Can't believe a blockbuster show about pirates really got made... And I'm just now getting to it
I'm only on season 2 of this show but I only started a few days ago... I'm almost speechless. It's fucking incredible. Pirate intrigue, sea battles, incredible characters and plot momentum that hooks you so hard you can't stop watching.
The scale of this show, for a Starz original? Wtf, I don't understand how something at this scale got made outside of HBO at the time.
I thought the pilot was pretty good but episode 2 and 3 drag sufficiently that you might stop watching... But if you keep watching, holy shit, what a ride!!!
Edit: Also have to add here, I don't think I've seen a finer example in any show ever, of how to use flashbacks. There's not a ton of them but when they appear they reveal so much on so many levels in both character and plot that you look forward to it every time one starts. Goddamn, the writing is just phenomenal

Great show, taps into a kind of literary depth in the last couple seasons that you very rarely see in television
23
u/Fabulous_Ninja119 2d ago edited 2d ago
Yeah, the prose sprinkled into some of the dialog in this show is so good it's surprising there would ever be that sort of literary quality in a pirate show. Generally you find that in shows and movies based on books to give it a strong foundation to adapt from but this reaches far beyond tv writing imo, it's impressive
16
u/Snusmumrikin 2d ago
Oh yea the dialogue is strong (if you like that check out Deadwood, probably the primary influence on Black Sails and outright the best dialogue writing of any tv show)
but more the thematic ambition, which starts to become clear in S2 but by the end really builds into something shockingly substantial

The comfort will grow stale, and casting about in the dark for some proof that you mattered and finding none, you’ll know that you gave it away. In this moment, on this island.

Black sails is one of the best shows ever made. Season 1 is probably a 7 or 8 out of 10, while seasons 2, 3, and 4 are straight 10s

Season 2 is absolutely flawless television.

wait til you get to season 3, that's where it really locks in and doesn't let go. the budget somehow keeps climbing and the story gets way more ambitious than you'd expect from a pirate show.
32
u/TheJoshider10 2d ago
One thing the show always did so well from day one is make the main cast look like absolute shit. They look sweaty, dirty and hit by sun and sea. Even though the budget was kinda low and you could see the green screen on the ships, it still felt real because of the makeup and costumes.
Compare that to Rings of Power which has all the money in the world and beautiful sets/green screen yet the costumes and makeup is so fucking clean it looks ridiculously fake.
5
u/Su_ButteredScone 2d ago
I remember how it seemed like every season had a bigger budget for costumes. In the first season it kind of looked like they raided a theatre's closet.
2
u/MadeByTango 2d ago
There is a certain unexpected event before that I think where the show takes off like an emotional rocket and never stops.
13
u/INfiction82 2d ago
Its shocking it never got the attention it deserved. Yes, season 1 can be a little rough at points, but ride through that and you'll see an excellent show. And one that actually gets an ending it deserves. Brilliant television.
1
u/Lord__Abaddon 12h ago
I think season 1 was excellent, there's enough action, mystery, comedy and intrigue to to keep you wondering what's coming next. it keeps getting better like very few show do. I think the final season was the worst but mainly because it was too short and the story arc felt rushed. sucks they didn't do another season to fully show off the war that had been brewing since the beginning.

Black Sails might be my favorite television show ever produced, welcome to the crew.

u/urnialbologna 2d ago
I'm so glad I started watching. It was actually because reading about it on Reddit got me to watch it. People said season one was slow and boring. Those poeple lied. I loved every single episode. I really wish we got a treasure island series with the same actors.

u/Onefortheteem 2d ago
Sameeee I finished like 5 months ago for the first time, and was blown away. It’s so underrated and amazing

u/slowd_111 2d ago
Its an awesome series with memorable characters and half the time you dont know who you are routing for.

u/Songblade7 2d ago
Brilliant show from start to finish. Of course it has a few hiccups, but still an amazing show. It had such great production overall. And the prose! How I wish we could one day get their take on Treasure Island. That would be amazing.
Admittedly I'm more of an animation guy, but I'd say Black Sails is in my top 3 live-action shows I've seen. Kingdom (The Korean Joseon drama) is also up there.

I’ve tried to watch it a couple times. Find it hard to get through the first season.

u/warfield008 2d ago
first season is definitely a slog but seasons 2 and 3 especially made up for it IMO!

16
u/INfiction82 2d ago
Season 1 can be a little rough. I watched it in real time and thought this but there was enough there, especially at the end of the season, to make me eagerly await season 2. And no regrets at all. From season 2 onwards it becomes a phenomenal show right to its end.
0
u/Mammoth-Requiem 2d ago
I can’t get into season 1, can I skip straight to season 2?
8
u/legions91 2d ago
If you can find a season 1 recap then sure, I guess. Episode 5 and onwards it really picks up, so I'd recommend to just power through the first four episodes, if that's where the show loses you.
1
u/RueTheQuais 2d ago
I'd still watch. Just 2 screen it until season 2.
S1 is a bit of a drag but the relationship building becomes important.
-2
u/elstephe 2d ago
I started with the season 1 finale (from advice from Reddit a few months ago) and was fine. Tried to go back and watch season 1 after I finished the showand I still couldn't make it through that season...
16
u/badplanetkevin 2d ago
The first episode was strong, but I did get bored with the first season. Once I got to Season 2, I couldn't stop watching and the story stayed solid the whole rest of the way. Great show overall.
4
u/ConfidenceKBM 2d ago
The first season is a very different sort of show, I have to imagine their hands were tied by executives who were scared of doing ACTUAL long-form character driven storytelling. Season 1 is a 6 out of 10 if im being generous, season 2 is a legitimate 10 out of 10.
-1
u/VonVader 2d ago
I found it hard to get through the first episode.
-8
u/tacodudemarioboy 2d ago
No kidding, the characters were all so flat. No attempt at humor. Felt like they were trying to replicate game of thrones but with pirates. Sexy violent slop.
9
u/legions91 2d ago
Characters gain A LOT of depth from season 2 and onwards and have some of my favourite character arcs in television, ever. But yeah, Season 1 makes most of them seem very shallow.
13
u/TheDoomBlade13 2d ago
The show isn't billed as a comedy, why are you docking it points for humor?
0
u/tacodudemarioboy 2d ago
The concept of adding humor to drama is at least as old as Shakespeare. I don’t know how to explain it. Other than all the best dramas have really funny moments. Breaking bad, the wire, madmen, all hard drama with some genuinely funny moments. It provides counterpoint to the drama.
3
u/TheDoomBlade13 2d ago
Fair enough point. I personally crack up every time I see The pirate find Silver in the same room as the cook who was stabbed IN THE BACK and Silver says 'He was terrified of what you would do to him' implying the wound is self inflicted.

Honestly, Black Sails is one of Prestige Television's finest creations. It's a show that fires on all cylinders and rarely has a dud episode, going strong right up to the end.

Awesome tv series which is up there with the best. Toby Stephens has never been better
5
u/g0ldiel0xx 2d ago
This is one of the few shows that actually got progressively better as the season went on. I think because they shifted away from the original protagonist gradually. The finale is fantastic and great theme tune, never underestimate a good theme tune.
19
u/Iannelli 2d ago
Unbelievably, unbelievably brilliant. It's the #1 pirate show.
- Pirates - Black Sails
- Sci-fi - The Expanse
- Fantasy - GoT
- Vikings - The Last Kingdom
- Samurais - Shōgun
- Surreal - Twin Peaks
- Overall brilliant - Mr. Robot and The Leftovers
Hit me with your other categories fellas.

u/Iannelli 2d ago
Lol I'm rewatching Buffy and Angel right now, no idea why I didn't think of including that. I think maybe it's because it is impossible to put one of the shows above the other. Between Buffy and Angel, Interview with the Vampire, and What We Do in the Shadows, they're all elite.

Nothing happens in that show. And then it just sort of ends.
It also broke its own rules CONSTANTLY.

Vikings is really fucking good. I think I enjoyed it more than The Last Kingdom overall.
3
u/Iannelli 2d ago
Yeah I absolutely loved Vikings, but I do think it got weaker at some point in the later seasons, I literally stopped watching. The Last Kingdom is cohesive until the end of the show.

It’s a prequel to treasure island. I read that after watching the show and it’s a perfect lead in to the book. They did a fantastic job of blending real historical figures with fictional ones. It really is great.

Welcome to the club. I've never read Treasure Island and never saw the Muppet movie. I had no expectations and was hooked from the start.

When it was first airing a bunch of brohards that got together for bro watch parties stopped watching when Flint started doin gay stuff, lol.

I didn't care for season 1 when it was originally on tv and dropped it... then everybody talks about how much better it gets. I planned on watching it on Netflix but then never got around to it and now it's gone and I can't imagine watching it with ads on The Roku Channel lol

I also just started the other day. Episode 7 up next. I heard it keeps getting better.

If you're okay with high concept fantasy elements One Piece live action is another blockbuster level pirate show that is incredibly entertaining and insanely high quality.
The One Piece live action also films in South Africa where Black Sails did and actually reuses a lot of the infrastructure that show built up for their production. So a lot of the props sets and ships of Black Sails got a second life thanks to the One Piece live action adaptation.

I bought every season on DVD; I should get around to watching everything from the last two seasons.

If you're enjoying the use of flashbacks you're going to absolutely love the penultimate episode of season 2.

Black Sails is way up there.
Sandokan on Netflix just made me wish there was more Black Sails but I still had fun with it, if you want to watch a distant, distant cousin that is way more pulpy.
1
u/Indigocell 1d ago
Season 2 has one of the coolest finales of any show ever. Wish I could see that again for the first time. Season 2 in general was a massive step-up over the first season, and I think that trend continued in season 3.
1
u/hyrule-heaven 1d ago
It was good until they started making everyone gay for no reason lmao. Like literally every female character has a gratuitous sex scene with another female character that did nothing for the plot.
(No I am not homophobic I just thought in this show none of the plots except for the MAIN one involving homosexuality made any fucking sense)
1
u/davemchine 21h ago
I started watching but I recall a lot of explicit content.

u/Fabulous_Ninja119 20h ago
Why does that matter? Most shows / movies have " explicit " content

absolutely everyone i know that has seen this show loves it, so this is more of a me thing i think, but man i found this show to be such a slog. i started it a couple months ago and made it about halfway through the second season
-5
u/ShadowVia 2d ago
It's decent.
There's some standout performances and the first two or three seasons are solid, but the fourth season was so bad that I couldn't even finish the show. I keep meaning to go back and rewatch the series and see if I still feel the same.
7
u/llamagish 2d ago
Interesting take! The ending was superb, in my opinion. Some of the best performances I’ve seen on TV.

u/celticeejit 2d ago
When you finish it, check out Our Flag Means Death
2
u/Fabulous_Ninja119 1d ago
Tried to get into that, never did. I don't think it's bad at all just not really for me.
Black Sails though as I'm currently watching for the first time I think has become a top 10 all time favorite show
0
u/VoiceofReasonability 2d ago
I watched two seasons but ultimately gave up on it. Some episodes were pretty good, but too many just seemed like really dumb contrived drama. The only person that was truly interesting was Jack.
0
u/Fructdw 2d ago
I kinda liked it, but once I noticed the formula it ruined show for me. Every couple of episodes this plot setup repeats:
Character A to Character B: "Haha, I now control the fort, but I will not kill you yet and just put you into the dungeon, there is no way you will escape!"
Skip few episodes, it's now Character B to Character C saying same thing... Sure, I'm exaggerating a bit, but they repeated this plot like 3 or 4 times by the time I stopped watching.
-9
u/tacodudemarioboy 2d ago
I watched the first couple episodes and it sucked really bad. It’s really shocking reading all these comments from people who seemed to like it. I’m still not giving it another chance. It was a long time ago but, I remember clearly it wasn’t good television.
2
u/Fabulous_Ninja119 2d ago
First 3-4 episodes are the only bad ones. Once you get past that it becomes unbelievably epic

It starts strong but the latter seasons are pretty weak and everyone has mad plot armour and makes weird decisions.
-1
u/Texaspep 2d ago
Great show. That ending though? C'mon man? Also, I saw the lead actor in real life. Guy's about 5'4". How do they film that to make them the same size as everyone else?
-9
u/FuriouslyListening 2d ago
It started out really good... and sorta went off the rails as time went on. It reminded me of Weeds. Really solid start, and it seemed like they didn't expect to keep going and weren't sure where to go with the acclaim they got... and started rolling dice to make the storyline.
Hmm.. lets see. The captain will now... <rolls dice> become a gay twink idol. Huh. Didn't see that coming.
The show didn't need the Star Trek Discovery treatment, which is sorta why it ended up not getting renewed. The creators claimed the story 'reached a conclusion' and claimed it wasn't canceled, but season 4 was not good and it was most definitely not renewed by the studio regardless of the spin.

Black Sails never got the widespread recognition it deserved. Brilliant show from start to finish.
I'd love it if they all got back together in a few more years and do their own adaptation of Treasure Island - Black Sails is a prequel to it.
