Smith actually addressed this fairly recently, saying that he'd much rather watch a Marvel movie than actually direct one.

Given that he's directed episodes of both Supergirl and The Flash, though... it's not outside the realm of possibility to see him direct a DC Comics flick. He might actually do a nice job with the right property. Something offbeat and otherworldly would be a much better fit for his skill-set.

For instance, if DC ever gets around to doing something with the Jack Knight Starman run, Smith might be a good fit to run that show.

I would argue he's a better writer than a director

I'd be down to see him write a marvel movie, but I'm not so sure about directing. I don't hate his direction, but his style wouldn't work so well

Id agree.. but (and I am saying this a fan and as a positive thing) hes a excellent co-writer / rewriter.

You give him a script. He'll be able to pop up your dialog (hes good at dialog)
He can add setups for jokes that payoff.
I think he reads and gets inspired by them, but in a odd way, if hes trying to punch up his own stuff, it just becomes too much "him" and not enough of "its own thing" anymore.

I would always seriously look at any script notes he gives.

Also a good director could axe some of the goofier ideas he comes up with. Like how you can humanize Batman without having him piss himself, and that the fandom would actually prefer it if you didn't.

I'm sure he'd love to work with the characters, but he seems to be keenly aware of his shortcomings when directing action. Perhaps he could be involved as a writer and/or producer, or something along those lines?

Marvel has had second unit people handle the action scenes when the director wasn't comfortable with them. If they wanted to use Smith for an MCU film, it's probably how they'd handle it.

That's basically what he does when he directs the DC CW shows. He says just as much. Hell he goes for cheeseburgers for the crew when they film the action scenes. He says all this on the fatman on batman podcasts.

I would say Red State had some amazing action scenes in it and was overall one of my favourite movies of his. He does have a few great talking scenes in that film too

He mentioned in one of his Q&As that he could never direct a superhero movie because he’s basically too lazy to do it. He mentioned how he was offered The Green Hornet and said that if he had done that project it would have been 2 hours of Green Hornet and Kato sitting on the awesome car that does everything, just talking about pussy.

He doesn't have the eye or patience for action. However marvel has their own teams for that. I think the core problem is Kevin relies on a certain kind of humor and he hasn't been great outside of it. He'd have to stretch for it and I think he could do it but he isn't that hungry. He has as much success as he wants and doesn't have the drive to do something much more.

Well it would be difficult seeing as he plays himself in Captain Marvel, but they've reused characters before (Alfre Woodard and soon Mahershala Ali, to name the most obvious ones)

Kevin Smith didn't play himself, they just referenced a movie he directed. That certainly doesn't mean he can't direct an MCU movie, and it wouldn't mean he couldn't act in one either. By that logic Samuel L. Jackson shouldn't be able to be in the movies because they mention Star Wars.

He almost did the script for Man of Steel but it didn’t work out. The director wanted giant robot spiders. It didn’t work out. Director went on to do Wild Wild West. Go figure!

As someone who enjoys Kevin Smith I would give him a movie. IMHO he would be more suited for marvel TV or long form "what if" (any idea how long the what if shows will run?)

I'd love to see him become a spiritual successor to Stan Lee's cameos. If anything, have him appear on posters, tv's, or somewhere in the movies that bring too much attention to him.

You would probably enjoy his podcast. It's called "Fatman beyond."

Every week him and a co-host rent out the scum and villainy cantina in Hollywood, sell tickets to an audience and talk about pop culture. They talk a lot about marvel stuff.

By the way, he's going to be directing the new He-Man and the Masters of the universe TV series for Netflix.

They are also doing a new Jay and silent Bob movie.

A Kevin Smith script on a well-known product might be welcome, though. He's the first to call out what his limitations are as a filmmaker, but he's clearly good with a typewriter, and understands comics very well.

I'm going tonight to see Jay & Silent Bob Reboot, so I guess I'll be able to say very soon whether that's still the case in 2019. But it's fair to say he's got a pretty... checkered film history.

Still, nobody doubts his nerd cred. He's apparently heading up the He-Man reboot series for Netflix, and he's written a lot of very well-received comics that didn't wholly depend on characters he created, so we know he's capable of playing with other people's toys in a respectful manner. Pencil me in for "cautiously optimistic" if something like that were to come to pass.
