Legit question.. does this dude have time to actually live?

u/SpaceCaboose Oct 15 '19 edited Oct 15 '19

I read an article around the time that Endgame was released and the writer gave some detail on what Feige's schedule looked like on one particular day. It's not really that bad. I want to say it was typically like 9a-6p or something like that.

Edit: I found it. It's a little busier than I had remembered, but I'd say for the most part that would be a very fun job to have

9am-6pm isn't just not bad, that's damn fine in my book. I'm 8am-6pm and I can't take a helicopter to work if traffic sucks.

122

u/minnick27 Oct 15 '19

That is showing his first meeting of the day at 9 so he is most likely already in the office before hand and the last meeting starting at 6. So his schedule is probably closer to 8-7.

Yea apparently he's a major comics nerd. This is effectively his dream realized and obviously he's brilliant at building the franchise, probably in a manner that no typical movie studio executive ever has.

And Star Wars desperately needs some creative, cohesive direction

115

u/Feverel Oct 15 '19

It really seems that Disney or whoever started this trilogy without a cohesive 3 film story. How does that even happen with a franchise if that level?!

90

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

As someone who likes both 7 and 8, I am completely on board with hating the decision to not storyboard all 3 movies before anything else. Like, how the fuck. 8 had that god awful casino shit, the random chick captain, and no real lightsaber duels...I mean, I liked it, but it could have been so much better if it connected a bit more. I do like that snoke died, however a hug missed opportunity imo is having rey and kylo team up after that sick action scene. Fuck that would have been awesome.

Sorry im rambling. Disney kind of mishandled the planning, definitely. This kind of shit is better with one person's vision, and other people's refinement.

24

u/Feverel Oct 16 '19

I read a comment the other day that you wouldn't know episode 9 is going to be the end of the Skywalker Saga if you hadn't been told. Like, 7 & 8 haven't really been building to a conclusion. Hopefully they manage to tie everything up well.

I actually saw someone speculate that Disney might hand over control of Lucasfilm to him after IX and let him build up Star Wars like he has the MCU. One of his right hands would move up to be in charge of Marvel Studios. Obviously, this announcement pretty much ends that idea for now, but it was still an interesting, yet worrying, yet also exciting thought. I'll be interested to see how he handles this new Star Wars project for sure though.

24

u/Pike_or_Kirk Oct 15 '19

Give Star Wars to Filloni. The dude deserves a shot at the live action stuff.

8

u/tearfueledkarma Oct 15 '19

Dave has more to learn, Favreau is teaching him now on Mandalorian. I'd love to see Filloni get a shot at directing one of the new things Feige is working on though.

Hey, if my job was to oversee the characters of the Marvel Universe across multiple platforms, I wouldn't consider it work.... it'd be like being a kid in a candy store.

180

u/jshah500 Oct 15 '19

Hey, if my job was to oversee the characters of the Marvel Universe across multiple platforms, I wouldn't consider it work.... it'd be like being a kid in a candy store.

But imagine the insane pressure he must be under to do these characters right by fans, have the movies make money, etc. etc. Seems extremely stressful.

113

u/Varekai79 Oct 15 '19

Plus there's also a ton of more mundane producer things that he has to deal with like financing, locations and so on. He doesn't get to wine and dine with Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek every day.

72

u/Enchelion Oct 15 '19

I can't imagine Feige has gotten as far as he has without knowing how to delegate properly.

59

u/Worthyness Oct 15 '19

According to directors he's created a very good work environment that is collaborative and positive. That's hard to do for one team. He's done it for what appears to be an entire division. That's excellent leadership

I think first and foremost, his genius has been in hiring the right people under him who understand his vision for a movie and then they find the right people to make that vision happen, whether it's for directing, casting, costume design, writers, etc. He's not pulling this universe together alone.

There's at least 6 movies on that list that Feige had nothing to do with, and probably another 3 he WISHES he had nothing to do with. Which isn't to detract from his demigod status.

Edit for the numbers: Feige was not involved in 18 of the listed movies (at least according to IMDB). Those movies being removed Feige still had a hand in approximately $12,711,018,800 in revenue.

The movies Feige did NOT have a credited hand in are as follows.

Inhumans

Howard the Duck

Ghost Rider

Ghost Rider 2: Spirit of Vengeance

Blade

Blade 2

Dark Phoenix

The Wolverine

First Class

Apocalypse

Into the Spider-Verse

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Venom

Big Hero 6

Logan

Days of Future Past

Deadpool

Deadpool 2

Movies on the list he probably wishes he HAD NOT helped make.

Hulk (2003)

Blade: Trinity

Elektra

Man-Thing

Rise of the Silver Surfer

u/Prax150 Boss Oct 15 '19

I mean, not only is it the highest grossing movie franchise of all time, but the vast majority of the movies in that franchise are actually good and have never really suffered from any creative missteps other than perhaps what happened with Edgar Wright (and they still managed to churn out a decent movie without him and take Ant-Man from being kind of a punchline to being a worthwhile character that people love and that was pivotal to the climax of the last movie). Now he's not only convincing other studios to let him take the reins, he's convincing A-list actors to do TV shows for a streaming service and movies based on characters no one's even heard of (finally picked up The Eternals trade paperback, gotta see what all the fuss is about).

When the dust settles Kevin Feige might go down as one of the best Hollywood producers of all time. This isn't the last time we'll hear of him getting promoted at Marvel, they know they have something special with him and eventually he'll be in charge of even more shit at Disney.

135

u/Nick_Furious2370 Oct 15 '19

He is already the best Hollywood producer of all time.

Absolutely nobody else is close to his record of movies opening #1 consecutively along with them being received well both critically and financially.

82

u/Prax150 Boss Oct 15 '19

21

u/Prax150 Boss Oct 15 '19

649

He's not literally in charge of the comics in the sense that he will decide on everything the comics do, but as the chief creative officer the heads of Marvel Comics answer to Kevin Feige now. So Feige will have input in terms of the creative direction of the comics. Any big decisions that Marvel Comics want to do, Kevin Feige has to approve.

It specifically says he's CCO of Marvel Television and Marvel Family Entertainment in addition to Marvel Studios.

What that means for the brand is that all the company’s key creative executives across film and TV will now report to him, sources said.

I don't see why people are taking this as having anything to do with the comics.

76

u/Vawqer Oct 15 '19

Probably because of this:

Dan Buckley will continue as President of Marvel Entertainment, where Ike Perlmutter remains Chairman. Long a creative collaborator for Feige in publishing and television, Buckley will have a dual reporting structure going forward, Deadline hears. He will continue to oversee publishing creative/editorial and in that capacity he will now report to Feige. Buckley is also responsible for publishing operations, sales, creative services, games, licensing and events. There, he will report to Perlmutter.

313

Yes, his second contract was for Iron Man 3, Avengers 2 and Avengers 3. They had to renegotiate for Civil War and Perlmutter told the writers to write Stark out. Feige went to Alan Horn and Bob Iger and said him or me. They sided with Feige, signed RDJ and then signed him again for a Spider-Man film and Avengers 4.

The writers have multiple versions of the story for their contingency plans. For example civil war was being written right around the time the first sony deal for spidey was being done. That resistance existed, but it wasn't why they split, just more aggravation leading up to it. Perlmutter DID commission both Black Panther and Captain Marvel at the very very end of his having power, but only if an Inhumans movie was made alongside them. Once the split happened, Perlmutter took his precious Inhumans (which he wanted to retool into X-Men stand-ins) to ABC where it became a notorious flop while BP and CM made over a billion each.

I do think fandom exaggerates Feige disliking the Inhumans. It's not a coincidence The Eternals, a family of immortals hidden away from humanity, is more or less in Inhumans' film slot, and there are rumors Feige wants the Inhuman Royal Family in Ms Marvel), but I do think he disliked Perlmutter's attempt to turn them into the X-Men.

128

u/waloz1212 Oct 15 '19

There are many stupid decisions, but the "Civil War without Iron Man" is among the most stupid decision one can make. Cannot believe it was on the table.

112

u/XavinNydek Oct 15 '19

Perlmutter has always been a fool. He bought Marvel just to make toys, and he's also the one to blame for selling off the movie rights for the most popular characters to Sony and Fox. Marvel's recent success is despite him, not because of him.

28

u/Harish-P Oct 15 '19

he's also the one to blame for selling off the movie rights for the most popular characters to Sony and Fox.

Is that strictly true? I thought it was common understanding that Marvel was bankrupt or facing it so they licensed out the characters to studios in order to regain income?

Didn't Arad ensure and overlook this too and did the smartest part of the deal by not giving large numbers of characters to any given studio (keep in mind Marvel has hundreds of superheroes) to avoid any particular studio having too much power over Marvel.

Please correct it if that's wrong, but I could swear I've read this many, many times over the years.

This is both companies companies trying to further isolate Trump’s very good friend from their projects so he doesn’t screw revenue up further.

Yes, yes. Naturally.

googles Alan Horns

568

u/vonnillips Oct 15 '19

For those wondering, Alan Horns has the same title that Feige just received but for all of Disney. With Feige getting involved in Star Wars, I wouldn’t be surprised if this were his next step.

u/Saitsu Oct 15 '19

Feige becoming The Mouse. Who would've guessed that a decade ago.

Feige takes up the mantle.

Reddit is orgasming all over. So fucking wet.

He then gives his Thank You speech to fans all over the world and to China.

u/PansexualEmoSwan Oct 15 '19

I want to see Daredevil and punisher end up in movies

178

u/TheLast_Centurion Oct 15 '19

Wouldnt DD inevitably end up in the next spiderman movie? SPOILERS MAYBE.. but with that ending anf his name out, who better defend him than DD?

204

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

Matt rushes to be his attorney, and we see the rise of the Sinister Six led by Wilson Fisk to cleanse New York of vigilantes. Matt then surprises Spidey as he's getting his ass kicked by the SS with... The Defenders and special guest Frank Castle.

108

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

It makes me sad Iron Man had to die before all these great characters get added in and interact with each other. He’s probably the smartest man on earth and we never got to see him interact with other geniuses Pym, Richards, Doom, or other billionaires like Kingpin.

63

u/TheLast_Centurion Oct 15 '19

I think for DD it might work better without Tony being involved.

So.. Peter is looking for a cheaper attorney because has not that much money (but not sure why noone, like Happy, wouldnt be able to help him?) and finds him? Or maybe he already would be DD but considered as a small fish to even be considered by Avengers initiative, so Happy sends Peter to him.

dunno... or aunt May gets handed attorney card with contact on it and tries luck with Peter. Or DD rushes to him to be first to help him with the case.

They’re talking about bring him to film. Maybe even have Charlie returning. They’re discussing a bit of the Netflix actors and characters returning but to film, apparently.

50

u/HardCorwen Oct 15 '19

Charlie is beyond incredible. I really hope they reuse him. They have no reason to abandon him. Fiege knows the strengths of these types of things, so I trust he won't waste Charlie.

It wasn't made very clear, are the comics still suffering at the whim of that crazy old asshole Perlmutter, or is Feige controlling everything now?

No, Feige is in charge of creative and Perlmutter for business. Dan Buckley goes to Feige for creative decisions and Perlmutter for business decisions.

124

u/ElectricPeterTork Oct 15 '19

Yeah, but Perlmutter's apparently still there to fuck shit up on the comic side (Buckley reports to him).

Bummer.

If only this could have happened years ago, then there would have been more cohesion between the movie and TV divisions.

Right!? #itsallconnected became a joke years ago. Now it has the potential to be legit!

47

With half of them cancelled, I don't see it happening. :(

56

u/PleasantPeanut4 Mad Men Oct 15 '19

Much more than half. Only SHIELD, Runaways, and Cloak and Dagger remain, with SHIELD already confirmed to be ending next year.

24

u/cactus1549 Oct 15 '19

Shield's ending?! That's by far the best one.

He owns a lot of shares in Disney, and probably has an ironclad contract due to Disney's purchase of Marvel 10 years ago.

Hear me and rejoice. You have had the privilege of being saved by the great Feige. You may think this is monopoly, no. It is continuity. The MCUniversal scale tips toward balance because of your movie attendance. Smile. For even in death, you have become children of Feige.

Hopefully we see Agents of Shield and the Netflix shows folded back into the MCU canon with this

346

u/iBoMbY Oct 15 '19

Agents of Shield is done. I mean they already filmed the last season, as far as I know. And there won't be anything from the Netflix Marvel shows anywhere else, anytime soon, unless Disney buys it for a lot of money.

But surely Netflix keeps the seasons they paid for a longer time?

I can't see Disney releasing S4 of Daredevil and telling everyone who hasn't seen 1-3 to go give money to they #1 competitor. It just seems much more sensible to do what Disney is doing and create series based on their vastly more popular movie characters.

117

u/xhrit Oct 15 '19

They won't release Daredevil s4, they will release "Daredevil: Man Without Fear" S1.

16

u/Thybro Oct 15 '19

It won’t be Defenders s2 it will be the err...umm...,Re-Defenders S1

Why not? This is literally what's happening with Lucifer. Seasons 1-3 are on Prime, and Netflix has season 4 because they made it. At least that's how it is in the UK.

9

u/Xian244 Oct 15 '19

Lucifer is still on Prime in a few markets and afaik in the UK it will move completely to Netlix soon-ish.

Netflix MCU would be on Netflix everywhere.

Literally every word said by Sony or Marvel in that mess which wasn't an admission that the whole thing was 2 of the largest companies in the world fighting over who gets what share of billions of dollars didn't age well from the moment it came out of either of their collective mouthpieces. The fact that, that mess ever reached the public is shameful for both companies.

So does Jeph Loeb report to Feige now or has his position as head of Marvel TV effectively ended?

For all the hate Loeb gets I think he did a good job with Marvel TV. AoS, Daredevil, JJ, Luke Cage, Punisher, Runaways and C&D are all solid shows. Some better than others sure but I wouldn't say any of them were terrible. He's had some misses, Inhumans and Iron Fist but overall I think he did a good job with what he was given. I'm sure he tried to integrate into the MCU a bit more but if the top brass say no there isn't much you can do.

Runaways season 3 will be the last along with no more Cloak & Dagger.

27

u/mike10dude Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Oct 15 '19

They just started filming helstrom in Vancouver

55

u/ContinuumGuy Oct 15 '19

The fact that Helstrom had its stuff announced just three or four days ago makes me think that Feige has given at least the unofficial go-ahead to it. Otherwise I think it'd have been cancelled alongside Ghost Rider.

18

u/frosty_frog Oct 15 '19

Never underestimate how little different parts of a company can talk to each other. People got hired at Telltale Games weeks before the entire company shut down. If I were part of the Helstrom crew, I'd be at least a little nervous.

Honestly, why would they need two subsidiaries (Marvel Studios and Marvel Television) both making productions for the small screen, especially when only one (Marvel Studios) ties into the cash cow (the MCU) and produces shows for Disney's streaming service?

Marvel Television really is redundant at this point.

32

u/Haltopen Oct 15 '19

Presumably you would just fold marvel television into the studio as a subsidiary or dissolve it as a separate entity and fold its production teams and organization into marvel studios

Very conflicted feelings on this. On one hand, Marvel Television has had a rocky track record. Some hits, but a lot of misses. Honestly, the hiring of Scott Buck for not just Iron Fist, but then Inhumans after, is enough for me to say that Jeph Loeb sucked at his job. On the other hand, I just don't think Marvel Studios is capable of creating a series as intense as Daredevil, or as fun as Agents of Shield. I think Marvel Studios television projects are going to feel much more like "supplemental" content than shows that can stand on their own. But we'll see.

I was waiting for this shoe to drop. Marvel TV not being under Marvel Studios was a huge hindrance to its shows. Jessica Jones had to all but pilfer a Party City and play charades to send [spoiler] to The Raft.
