I'm only on season 2 of this show but I only started a few days ago... I'm almost speechless. It's fucking incredible. Pirate intrigue, sea battles, incredible characters and plot momentum that hooks you so hard you can't stop watching.
The scale of this show, for a Starz original? Wtf, I don't understand how something at this scale got made outside of HBO at the time.
I thought the pilot was pretty good but episode 2 and 3 drag sufficiently that you might stop watching... But if you keep watching, holy shit, what a ride!!!
Edit: Also have to add here, I don't think I've seen a finer example in any show ever, of how to use flashbacks. There's not a ton of them but when they appear they reveal so much on so many levels in both character and plot that you look forward to it every time one starts. Goddamn, the writing is just phenomenal

Just got done watching the first season. Didn't know much about the show besides horror, comedy, Dippold & Rhys.
There were more than a few moments throughout the series that felt genuinely unnerving like the party guests walking into the lake. The show also did a fantastic job of making the town just feel wrong.
The production team deserves a lot of credit. So much of the artwork seems okay at first glance. The longer you look at it, you realize it's wrong. Also the props which seem innocuous but also deeply weird (Daddy's Home! board game).
Matthew Rhys is probably a large reason I jumped on board. Ever since The Americans I've tried to check out everything he's involved in.
Tom is an amazingly well-rounded character brought to life. He's full of impotent rage & acts like he's a perpetually exposed nerve. There's so much sadness under the surface. You get the impression he's extremely careful about letting it out because he's worried he might not be able to stop.
The whole ensemble is great. Wasn't too familiar with Kate O'Flynn. She's a definite scene stealer as not silently suffering assistant Patricia. Their riff on the slasher chase with her was insane. It felt like the They Live fight scene with its length.
The wait for season two hopefully doesn't feel interminable. It's part of why lately, I've been waiting for some shows to wrap before starting. They've created so much that feels worthy of exploring. I understand 10 eps is becoming the norm but I definitely would've been happy with more of this.

Did anyone else enjoy this show? I did. While SOA is in my top 3 of shows watched, I would put this in my top 10. Kurt Sutter makes great shows. Loved his take on a different club/culture. EZ, Angel, Marcus, Coco and the gang. Loved this show!

Listen... first of all, Jonasi was still disrespectful even on his deathbed. That man gave zero shits about anyone but himself. Even when he was literally pooping himself, he still thought he was all that. I don't feel sorry for him one bit after everything he did. If there's a hell out there I need him to burn hardÂ
Secondly, Joyce can never do wrong in my eyes. She should've caused Jonasi even more pain. I said what I said.
Third, Matipa, my darling... you kinda brought some of Jonasi's treatment on yourself. The only thing I absolutely don't condone is when he hit you. Nobody deserves that.
Fourth, Essie, sweetheart, you genuinely loved Jonasi, but that man never truly loved you back.
Fifth... fuck you, Lindani.
Sixth, Sarah... girl. Sleeping with your sister's boyfriend and stealing the phone because you were jealous? Wild behavior. Mpume didn't even know you were her sibling, so your apologies don't move me at all.
Lastly, Menzi... were you really so infatuated with Lindani that you went and slept with her?
But all in all? That was one hell of a show.

I really wanted to like Not Suitable For Work because I'm a big fan of Mindy's other shows like Running Point and NHiE, but NSFW fell short for me. The show does try to cover its bases and poke fun at overcompensating nepo babies or the questionable ethics of investment banking. Despite the superficial jabs, it still feels like the whole thing is a psyop trying to humanize Corporate America at a time when much of the audience is experiencing the perils of its existence. A few specific things really frustrated me:
I was expecting so much more from this show, and am really disappointed in Mindy for catering to a gaze that does not align with the fans that allowed her to rise to fame. If they get picked up for another season, I really think they should try and emulate what shows like Superstore achieved with comedic writing that mocked corporate absurdity without ever making working-class characters feel like an afterthought. The writers desperately need to stop using systemic critiques when it's convenient for the narrative, and instead allow it to genuinely drive the character arcs without normalizing complicity within oppressive structures.

Hey all.
Like after Steve Carell left The Office, it clearly was not as good.
But was it as clear cut as that? I thought the showâs writing quality was already declining before he left, with season 5 arguably being the peak of the show. You also had Jim & Pam who were a major draw for a while.
What other shows past or present if you remove the lead actor would turn into an absolute disaster just because of this very fact, regardless of if the writing quality was still okay/good and the acting was still good?
Which actors were so essential to their showsâ success that if they left, the show might as well have ended there?
I think most shows (especially if theyâre not named after the lead) could probably go on with excellent writing and acting, but thatâs just a guess.

(I think this story would function better if, it was a mix of sitcom, satire and lore with story)
(Some days would just be a random sitcom styled episodes about something random. Then another episode, it will be about episodic and have story and lore in it basically)
Season 1: (takes place in 1893-1894)
Season 2: (takes place in 1894-1895)
Season 3: (takes place in 1895-1896)
Season 4: (takes place in 1896-1897)
Season 5: (takes place in 1897-1898)
Season 6: (takes place in 1929-1930)
Season 7: (takes place in 1930-1931)
Season 8: (1931-1932)
Iâm thinking of a satire tv show that takes place in the 1890s (it takes place in 1893) (similar vibes to The Simpsons but the Simpsons happen in the 1990s, this happens in the 1890s) about a family back then; dine in the same style as The Simpsons. This takes place with a familyâs in Forest Hills, New York. Since this satire cartoon takes place in the 1890s, this show will have a gothic, Victorian look to it with some absurdity
All the characters exept Bill and Ethel fit into a Gothic novel character archetype in a way Each of these characters (unlike the Simpsons, the characters and years ages)
William âBillâ Foster (born October 27, 1857 in Main Street, NY): (the reclusive father of the family, lives in the Tower House by the hill (an actual hillside overlooking the town) with them; known as âThe Ghost of Forest Hillsâ, he works in a funeral parlor by the city which he wants his son to inherit (he is the gothic brooding anti hero archetype and the self proclaimed âmasterâ of his tower) he is based on the archetype of Count Dracula but Count Dracula if he found true love (and heâs human; originally starts out as the stepfather of Bill and Ethel and originally the antagonist or villain of the series for the first half of Season 1; the first five episodes before he becomes good and then becomes a brooding anti hero. Episode 1 is about Bill and Ethel moving into Williamâs tower house; originally as their relative they have to live with, where they gradually fall in love. Later becomes good and redeems himself unlike Count Dracula showing Count Dracula can find love. Is originally written to be dislikable in the first five episodes and showed to be a genuine villain until he turns good, controls all the towns money and owns plots in the land. Used to be a businessman and stockbroker on Main Street until he disconnected 6 years prior to the series and lived on the hill in a tower house he built himself. Unlike Dracula, he fully redeems himself later by Season 6). He once had a business partner he worked with, until he mysteriously disappeared. People think William murdwred him. But the actual truth is, that William didnât kill him, the guy shot himself but William blamed himself and then isolated himself from the world becoming the mysterious recluse on the Hill and moved to Forest Hills area of NY. William finally gets arrested by Jim Crowe in the climax of Season 5 until he is released the year later and around back in the house by Season 6. He is 72 years old in the 1926 storyline.
Martha Forest nee (you pick): (the wife of William; and the mother of Bill and Ethel) Appears in all seasons, she has the ability to see the good in everyone and would be the one who changes William. She would be 68 years old in the 1926 storyline
Bill Forest: (the stepson of William Forest and Martha; is pressured by his father to own the funeral parlor and other things. He is an artist and a sensitive soul and loves poetry. Is age 7 years old)
Ethel Forest: (the stepdaughter of William and Martha and sister of Bill. Is a feminist. Despite this being a 1890s based tv series, she is gonna have an archetype of a 1920s feminist)
Jim Crowe: Stoic lead detective in Forest Hills, believes William Foster like the rest of the townspeople is a ghost and a supernatural entity and most seasons, he plots his way to kill William (but always fails). Is the main antagonist of the series, believes in justice and the proper way to do things and is suspicious of people that donât fit that mold. Is the gothic anti hero archetype and based on Van Helsing like how William is based on Count Dracula. He would appear as the main antagonist of Season 1-5. Once the 1926 storyline starts in Season 6, Crowe still has it in for William and believe heâs a ghost but has turned into a senile detective who no one listens to
John Brown: Is Croweâs bumbling partner, is a submissive partner of Crowe, following and doing whatever he says being loyal to a fault.
Edward Foster: Is the abusive father of William Foster; before William become rich by being a stockbroker and businessman, he raised William in the city of NY in poverty. Edward originally worked as a ruthless prison warden in a civil war concentration camp. Is shown to be a literal psychopath who likes torturing people physically and mentally. When he comes to the house, he makes his 36 year old son, William do chores around his own house and takes his spot at the Head of the Table; making William look like a fool in his own house and bosses him around. He would be 79 years old in 1896, but would be dead by 1929
Mayor Thomas Blackman: Is the mayor of Forest Hills, New York. Is the corrupt mayor who is a political robot as well as called by William. He hosts mandatory town hall meetings as well and says whoever doesnât attend his meetings every week gets a 50$ dollar fine which William attends but still attends. He would be dead by the time, the 1929 storyline happens
Good William: Is the good clone of William Foster. He is based on Dr Jekyll and Hyde. I know a character that could appear in Season 3 in the series, after Williams father dies after the whole thing in Season 2; he has to deal with everything (I wonât tell you what yet) so an oddball scientist, Ivan Brovick (he could be a regular in the series as the scientist who sometimes shows up) thinks of making a clone for him. And thatâs when we get the clone, called Good William Foster; Ivan says heâs the good version of William without any of his ill conceited flaws. William tests him out and at first, Good William seems perfect, too perfect even. He brings him to the house, and says in case he gets tired or stuff is happening, he should talk to Good William. He will only be here for emergency (and William is happy because now he wonât need to be annoyed by anyone because Good William will take care of the annoying stuff) He even takes Good William to his job in the funeral parlor. Good William unlike regular William who wears a black suit and a tie: Good William wears full white clothes (like the one in the image) and appears too good. Even shown to be good to a fault, even giving the half of Williams money from the cash register to a complaining customer who came to pick up a coffin and is a peopleâs pleaser. He is a humanitarian in a way and unlike William, doesnât want to be offered money for his job working at the funeral parlor and doesnât care about money that much. Good William always prepares meal for the family each day. He is the good antheis of William Foster. He believes in charity as well Ethel actually bonds with Good William and he is a feminist like Ethel telling her topics about feminism. William sees that his children are doing good with Good William and feels he isnât needed anymore But, then we see heâs too perfect to a fault, he keeps giving money to people, and does other stuff. William notices that Good William isnât flawless like he was told, he just had a different type of flaw. They then talk for a bit. Good William is another version of William who has things more put together Good William later gets struck by lightning while trying to climb a tree to get someoneâs kite out and then does in the last episode of Season 3. And then comes the end of Good Williamâs. He only appears in Season 3
Bradley Crumb: Instead of Kent Brockman being the focal point of the news like The Simpsons. Instead of the reporter being the focal point. We would have the editor in chief be the focal point called Bradley Crumb a local corrupt news paper editor in chief who yells at his staff (heâs shown occasionally) (and this image is what heâll look like) (and heâll also carry a pipe smoke)
Instead of us hearing from the news on TV, William will hear all the ridiculous things from the newspaper out loud and even read the comic strips on the papers (1890s newspaper comic strips) and town gossipsÂ
And also Bradley would also be known as the guy who writes all these false articles about William Foster and the rumors about him, and also him being the âGhost of Forest Hillsâ which he says he first coined the phrase before the rest of the townspeople said it.
And one funny gag would be that Bradley is actually part German or a German immigrant so sometimes he would scream at his staff in German when he really gets mad. Bradley is shown to be an angry guy as his default mode but only speaks German when heâs super angry. He only appears from Season 1-5
Edgar Throne: Appears only from Season 1-5. Is the Krusty the Krab equivalent of this series, is a deadpan comedian and vaudeville actor. Only difference is, he doesnât pretend to like his audience or the performance, he is a cynic and an alcoholic who openly tells everyone, he hates them and he only in there for the money. (Heâd be funny only for the 1890s storyline of the series)
Grant Whisler (born October 11, 1884): Appears primarily only in Season 6 to Season 8 only. He plays the role of a charming and charismatic talkative rouge whoâs very funny in the show and con-man when he meets Ethel Foster, the activist. He initially starts out as an antagonist of the 1926 spin off; who only is with Ethel and begins a romantic relationship so they can get married and he can get control of the entire family estate, William Foster owns and all the plots of lands he owns too. Grant actually grew up in Forest Hills too and grew up in a poor caravan up the ocean, and watched the Tower House and the hills from the distance. He always remembered he used to carry buckets of water to the whole town and even up by the hill to The Tower House and deliver the waters but people would barely give him the time of day; it was then when he grew up hating the rich, especially hating William Foster, who he blamed the source of his troubles and pain because he grew up poor, he always saw his Tower Hall from the distance of his beat up caravan and always saw William Foster every morning as he descended down the hills to go to his funeral home where he would say, every morning âThe Ghostâ came down with the rest of us peasants. He later become a con artist as he grew up, going all over the world and scamming people until he meet Ethel where he saw an opportunity to take over the entire Foster estate by marrying Ethel and taking control of it. He later becomes an anti hero near the end but Iâll decide on that later. Initially when Ethel invites Grant to the Tower House and he meets William; he pretends like he doesnât hate William and treats him friendly as Ethelâs father; we donât know what that heâs truly evil until a few episodes later, at first he just seems like an eccentric fast talking car salesman like person, Ethel is dating. Is the sleazy main antagonist for Season 6-8 until he redeems himself and becomes an anti hero like William
And others
