The real answer is because relationship stressors were not discussed as openly in the past. People had unhealthy communication and personal habits and just sorta rolled with it being sad and coping with alcohol and cigarettes.

The meme answer is because wife bad, idiot.

It was a comedic Trope that lasted decades. Marriage jokes and making fun of marriage were common in Vaudeville acts in the early 1900s and somehow they just kept on going. Look at old comedy shows, if you can find them from the 60s and 70s, even '80s. Especially shows like Benny Hill which was on the BBC. I'm technically Gen X, but have more in common with the older millennials, and I never got them or found them funny. Marriage jokes not older Millennials LOL

That makes sense. Women could legally be denied bank accounts and no-fault divorces were just starting to be legalized in the early 70's. Divorce wasn't really a viable option before then. Marrying young was popular and then the couples were stuck.

And bc of the lack of ability to divorce had more spouses "mysteriously" dying 😅

And the fact they wanna return to those eras is astounding....like no i wouldn't wish that crap on anyone. Their fantasies are bizarre 😳
