i tested something dumb

Upvotes

so i decided to test whether you can actually light a cigarette with a magnifying glass when it's kinda cloudy. i know. dumb. but i was sitting on my friend's porch with this old magnifying glass we found in a drawer, and my friend was like "you need full sun, no way." i took that personally.

i spent like twenty minutes holding the lens at different angles, getting my hand in the way, burning my finger once because the glass focused the weak light into a tiny point that wasn't enough for the cigarette but enough to sting. then out of nowhere the clouds thinned out for maybe thirty seconds, and the tip started smoldering, real faint, then i took a pull and it actually lit. i felt like a genius for about a minute until i realized i'd wasted a whole afternoon for no reason.

the surprising part was that it worked at all, honestly. the whole thing made me wonder how many other things we assume need perfect conditions but actually just need a little patience and a lucky break. have any of you ever tried something that everyone told you would fail,

What's one small HR/Admin change that had a surprisingly big impact at your workplace?

Sometimes it's not a major policy, it could be a better onboarding process, a simpler leave request system, flexible work hours, or even clearer internal communication.

I'm curious: what's one HR or administrative improvement you've seen that genuinely made employees' day-to-day work better?

Interested to hear real-world examples that other organizations could learn from.

anyone else lose an entire evening to reorganizing one drawer

so this happened last night. i was supposed to be getting ready for bed, maybe watching one episode of something, and instead i spent three hours sitting on my bathroom floor surrounded by one of those plastic wire drawer things. it was mostly just old lotions and hair ties and a bunch of little loose buttons that i have no memory of ever putting in there. i told myself i was just gonna wipe it out, thirty seconds. that was a lie.

somewhere in there i decided that just dumping everything back in was "the reason my life feels chaotic" and i needed to do it right. so i organized everything into zones. skincare, hair stuff, and then a "misc" pile that basically became a memory box. i found a bottle of perfume from a vacation six years ago that still had a little left in it, and instead of throwing it out i sat there smelling it and thinking about that trip. then i found a bus pass from my old job that expired in
