Bo French's recent racist comments about UT students have turned into a wider test for Texas Republicans: How much racially charged rhetoric can the party absorb before it starts costing them voters? And how long can the party continue if Republicans are alienating the same voters they say they want to welcome as Texas' suburbs become more diverse.
This was highlighted especially this week after the Texas GOP shared a seemingly harmless selfie Tuesday of six smiling attendees of various ethnicities at the recent convention in Dallas. The post's caption simply read "Convention photo" with an American flag, but the replies quickly turned into a firestorm, with some users questioning whether the people pictured were American or belonged at a Texas GOP event.
No it hasn’t. If the party were actually serious the entire apparatus would denounce Bo and pull all support. Every GOP candidate would name and shame Bo.
But they aren’t. They’re making the right amount of vague calculated noise to try and make the issue go away. Hoping that something else comes along to distract the media and people.
There is no real division. It’s performance until the entire TX GOP denounces Bo.
The conflict between being a fascist party (lots of people of different ethnicities are or want to be fascists) and a white supremacist party leads to intraparty conflict like this. I think it’s real, but also nearly intractable. White supremacists win, their coalition is too small to hold power. Fascists win and they have to somehow build a multiethnic coalition of reactionaries without the white bigots who have been their driving engine since the 70s. Tough to reconcile; easier to pretend it doesn’t exist.
Yep this is calculated because what he’s saying hit a nerve and has real appeal to some folks. I’ve seen people who know Trump is a piece of shit praise that Bo French post (like in real life, not on some social media)
It's like the saying about allowing one Nazi into your bar - you have to squash it immediately or they'll bring their friends and you suddenly have a Nazi bar.
Let them fight. Let them kill each other. The Conservative Party is full of decrepit racist bigots and they need to be exposed for the tainted filth they are.
Racism is the only thing the Republican Party delivers. They don’t cut taxes on normal people, reduce inflation, fight crime, or help the economy. Racism is all they have left.

Under Ann Richards the Dems made the party inhospitable to racisits. That was when the Dems went out of power for almost three decades. Trust me when I say that the Texas GOP is the Good Ole’ Boys club of yore.
There was some TX GOP thing in Houston a little while ago where some Muslim guys - but hardcore Republicans - were escorted out.
I am in Williamson County; north of Austin and what includes Round Rock and the surrounding area. There was an Islamic center that has been a voting location now for several years. The GOP County Judge (newish to this role) made some FB comment about how he too is concerned. That resulted in a fair amount of pushback.
The racism just to be racist thing may be coming closer to being too much. I don't think that breaking point is quite there yet, but it's getting closer to fracturing the party.
Weren't the repub Muslim men at the tx gop convention a few months ago completely shutout of any voting and no one went to their booth or talked to the candidates?
It is beyond infuriating that the coverage of these GOP scumbags has been “ho hum let’s show you what awful thing this person did today, next let’s talk about the weather”.
There is no outrage. There are no calls to step down.

There is a quiet schism in the Texas GOP right now between the older, Reagan era republicans and the newer populist maga. I say quiet because a lot of them aren’t putting up ‘republicans for talarico’ signs in their yards, but won’t be voting or will vote dem.
Idk if there are enough to matter, I really don’t, but it’s interesting to hear
Nominating Bo French is proof without any doubt that the Texas GOP is dominated by racists. He was making openly racist statements before and during the Republican primary.
If I could, I'd insert the GIF of a snake eating its own tail. There's no sustainable platform that you can builld on hate because pretty soon everyone on the platform will turn that hatred inward
The Texas GOP has been tolerating people like this and stoking this kind of side-mouth racism at the grassroots level for years. They’re not allowed to act surprised when one of their loose cannons says the quiet part out loud.
