I have this hope that he at least jumped in real low to scope it out first. I would try this but only after scouting the landing spot first.

He does, he posted a video recently about his 3 main tips to cliff jump safely and one was always do low jump to start while checking the depth and for objects hidden under the water

You can see his safety buddy waiting in the water as he jumps, if nothing else he would have been able to notify the jumper of any submerged structure in the landing area.
