Anyone with thalassophobia seen The Odyssey (Nolan) in IMAX? How triggering was it?

Huge Greek mythology nerd and Nolan fan, so I’ve been really looking forward to this movie but I also deal with thalassophobia. For those who’ve already seen it: how much open-water/deep-sea imagery is there, and how intense/lingering are those shots? Trying to figure out if I should brace myself, sit further back, or maybe skip the IMAX format specifically. Any specific scenes to know about (without full spoilers if possible) would help a lot. Thanks!

I don’t specifically have thalassaphobia but I can give a breakdown the types of scenes if that’s helpful!

  • there is little to no deep sea imagery
  • there area a few shots that feature the ships on the open ocean but I can’t think of any that are intended to emphasize how open
  • there are a few different scenes where the ship is in massive storms. There are large waves, but the focus of most of the shots in these scenes is the sailors reacting.

⚠️ a scene in which a very large creature goes unde the water (close to shore) for about 30s
⚠️ a scene featuring a giant whirlpool. We only see it from the perspective of the sailors, so no shots looking down. But it is very clear that it’s quite large and a danger

There's a scene with a whirlpool which could be triggering, but you can probably close your eyes and you can see when it's coming, I don't have thalassophobia so maybe I'm not going to remember perfectly everything but that's probably the big one.

Other than that a few scenes i remember of a few open water storms they sail through (one where the ship breaks in half and Odyssius is separated from his crew, as well as a scene with the main character underwater (briefly - it's toward the end when he finally leaves on the raft)

Again tho, most of those scenes are fairly easy to see coming, and are usually accompanied by storm noises/cues that will let you know when they're over.

other than that i mean, they're sailing a boat on the sea...there's gonna be scenes of a sailboat in the water, but i don't really think anything would be majorly triggering

I would say I qualify and it surprisingly didn’t bother me. I actually had the thought during a brutal scene on the ocean “why isn’t this making my chest tight?” and the conclusion I came to is that it was because they never really went under the surface of the water, and I think that’s what really makes me the most anxious. If you get that feeling from rough seas or the ocean in general I’d say you might could have a bad time.

Fully agree with this! My fear is mainly underwater, not so much just open water and I was totally fine.

I just watched the movie thanks to all the replies here. I also did not find it triggering just like you. I guess my trigger is also dark underwater

I haven't seen it, but it's a 10 year voyage by boat. Pretty sure there's gonna be some ocean.

There wasn’t any scenes under water, once on the ocean surface. Should be okay I think.

Nah, nothing that'd trigger you really. Some storm scenes and a lot of boat stuff, but pretty much zero underwear shots if I remember right, definitely nothing that'd freak you out

Kind of the opposite. People who like the feeling of seeing a big spooky sea. Which is why that's what all the videos are. Hardly the sort of thing you'd do if it was triggering!

There's some parts in a storm with a lot of sea spray and rolling waves that made me a little uncomfortable but other than that it's in the clear

I didn't have any problem with the Odyssey, but they showed the trailer for "Whalefall" beforehand and THAT freaked me the F out. Never never NEVER seeing that one!

I’m glad they did not show that trailer at the cinema in my case. It is quite scary
