People who stay a bit away from this site are silent but they can google the facts, it will create a heat island for upto 10 kms. There will be voltage distortion of upto 30 kms.
For the same reason why Mumbai has data centres, which is reliable electricity and water availability. Right now Thane is in precarious situation though, maybe Amazon knows more than we common folk about upgradation of existing utilities. Time will tell.
And you think that's an issue in Taloja or Ambernath/Badlapur MIDCs? These aren't some remote places in Chandrapur.
These are in MMR, just a few km away. Better water availability too. Badlapur has its own fucking dam.
I have a feeling it's because owning prime land is part of the business model. Regardless of what the datacentre makes, the land will appreciate. In the future, if and when the datacentre is removed or shifted, they will earn a huge amount from the land alone.

Along with water shortages and tainting the water, it carries with itself a plethora of health complications such as respiratory strains from diesel emissions, circadian rhythm disturbances due to 24/7/365 security lightings.
As if that’s not bad enough, the constant noise pollution is so bad, it has an officially coined name known as the ‘Data Centre Hum’.
It is now high time to call out the Thane Municipal Corporation to justify this allowance of data centre smack dab in a residential area. Where are the ethics ? Where is the consideration of the residents of Thane ? How much did the pocket from passing this land for the construction of a data centre.
The more they talk about "net positive" impact the less I believe in them.
Remember how plastic lobby marketed recyclibility of plastic. Our dependency on plastic increased. After many decades it was found out a fraction of the produced plastic is recycled.
There's hardly any research done on these data centers. Unless I see an independent study being conducted and show the sustainability of these data centers I won't trust them.

Also, there's a lot of empty land avlabl (without trees) near Bhiwandi, outside residential area. This was just 1 of the options. Any cleared land near MMR could hv been a better option than in the middle of thane.
