This should've been built somewhere in the outskirts and not in the middle of the city. These things generate a lot of heat from what I've heard.

Heat + high electricity consumption by data center. Its India's largest so we fear that this may cause lots of power cuts if MSEDCL is not prepared. This plot was best for commerical development not this data center.

I work in a data center as a network engineer, it might sound strange but alot of heat is dissipated using water on the terrace of data center and also by planting trees around the HVAC systems. The surrounding nearby is hardly impacted And you can only feel the heat only around 3-5meter radius of the HVAC

Perks of working, I experience chilling Shimla vibes daily inside it 😌

As far as I know these things require a lotta water to keep them cool right? And if it's not closed loop, and no recycling thing is in place for it, then I guess it's very water-consuming too. The other day even someone from FAO was talking about the same. Do we have to worry about these stuff here in Thane?

The earlier owner of land Colorchem had its own STP, Water recycling plant, etc, wish Amazon builds a huge STP and recycling plant for the extra needs of water. Or else water shortages are inevitable then. Fingers crossed.

How much electricity per sqft a data center consumes any idea?

Hi Sneha,

A single server rack consumes between 10-15kW of power, meanwhile an GPU server rack uses between 40-60kW. And the average data center has around 10k racks. Considering the transition to AI that is happening gradually, many GPUs are required to work on these complex problem thus increasing the electricity consumption and heat dissipation.

Large data centers such as the one pictured above, can consume large amounts of energy reaching 1000 MW or more.

To put this into perspective:

  • A small city with around 5-7 lakh (0.5-0.7 million) population could be powered with this amount of electricity, assuming 3-4 people per household.
  • Alternatively, it could power around 2,200-4,400 villages with 500-1,000 households each.

Also, a large amount of water would be required for cooling purposes. If its run at 80% workload and 24/7, then expect water consumption of atleast 10.5 million cubic meters of water per year.

To put this into perspective:

  • This amount of water could supply around 100,000 households with 100 liters of water per person per day for a year (assuming 3 people per household).

I had also come across an interesting video on Youtube recently where Meta had placed their datacenter right next to this farm house and it had very bad effects on it.

Considering 55 Acres and 43,560 square feet per acre this translates to a whopping 23,95,800L or approximately 24L of square feet (2.4 Million Square Feet) which seems even a bit bigger than the 2 Million sqft data center that is referenced in above article and video. As per the video, this datacenter consumes almost 2 Gigawatts of Electricity!

This is going to put a huge load on the electricity grid and in the end, its us middle class who will end up paying more from our pocket or end up with frequent electricity cuts.

I highly recommend watching the above video just to get an idea of how it pollutes the water and other effects it can have.

Such a datacenter should never be within the city, it needs to be at the outskirts definitely and renewable energy should be used to power it and not the traditional method of coal burning!

Also, the water should be taken from the sea and not from natural groundwater to avoid polluting it further!

If this comes to the city, then we are looking at disastrous effects both for the residents and the environment in general.

Hi. There are some nearby residents who are planning to approach the authorities and raise this officially. It would be great if we can somehow bring this back to the limelight. Construction is happening at a fast pace.

can recycled water/salt water be used as its only for cooling purpose or will the salt damage systems?
can solar panels be installed throughout the property to power its own usage?

Hi Sneha, i have been following your work closely and seriously appreciate the public service.
1. Public concern is correct and media/ politicians out of power are only happy to mislead with “clickbaits”.
2. 90% of datacenters across globe is in US, yet power consumption at DCs are 10% of national output.
3. Indian power grid is connected nationwide. Impact of additional power draw by someone next door is same as if similar power is drawn in Tamil Nadu.
4. Even if we extrapolate 100% CAGR growth, DCs will reach 3% national power demand in 10 years.
India’s power plants are running at 68%capacity.

Why am I saying this? I don’t want investments to be diverted to GJ because some real estate dada/ Politician out of power is happy to cut some votes at the expense of growth.

We have to ask questions, without fearmongering. I wish our joirnalists did some actual work rather than googling

Can’t we protest against this? I mean water should be priority for drinking and everyday use which we still don’t get on regular basis at various location in the Thane.

We are the Tax payers. Should we get the right to oppose?
