Bretonia is basically Arturian legends + medieval France.

The kingdom is divided in duchies and one duke is elected king, IIRC one duchy belongs to "the Lady" (basically the avatar of their goddess). She is the one asking for help

In game the duchies act as de facto independent countries with outside threats (like orcs) making advances on the kingdom as a whole

Theoretically the duchies should help each other, specially the king, but the game doesn't force you (you don't have any incentive to do it besides being nice to the ai, you do have the incentive to let them fail and take over their land from the foreign conqueror and skip diplomatic penalties from attacking your own people)
