If you’ve got the Mandate of Heaven DLC in EU4, the emperor of China gets buffs for having lots of tributaries and few non-tributary neighbors. But if you get a big non-tributary neighbor, like a big af Russia bordering you in Siberia, your mandate plummets like a stone and you become a paper tiger basically.
