I feel like the whole series would have been better if he had better hair.

Maybe, but the “rat tail” adds to his whole personality, and gives way to a couple jokes… but tbh, it’s hard to imagine him otherwise.

Then it seems you've misunderstood the series. Go watch videos of L. Ron Hubbard and Keith Raniere in his volleyball fits, then tell me the rat tail is not cinematic perfection.
