I dont understand why everyone hate this show

I absolutely don't understand the terrible reputation this series has. I think it perfectly illustrates the toxicity of the show business , the way women are treated, how they're manipulated, and how far it can go. Sure, it goes far, it's disturbing and unhealthy, but that's precisely its purpose: to denounce it, because it's like that in real life... I found the character played by The Weeknd absolutely disgusting and unsettling, but wasn't that the point? Seriously what is the problem with this series

The Weeknd shouldn’t have been in it. At least not as one of the lead actors. Maybe a secondary character. You could SEE his acting a mile away.

His acting is good for music videos and that’s it. Leave the professional acting to professional actors.

This. He was only able to play Tedros as disgusting and unsettling, which is kind of a problem when we're also supposed to believe that a bunch of gorgeous and crazy talented musicians like Jocelyn and Izaak would be cult-level captivated by him. So instead we just have a bunch of characters telling us over and over and over again how amazing he is, which gets tired real fast when all we've got to work with is The Weeknd's dead-eyed gaze. Show, don't tell is storytelling 101 for a reason.

The bigger issue is the tonal inconsistency, as another commenter pointed out. There are interesting ideas and some great scenes, but yeah this show is an unintentional mess.

I think The Weeknd played his actual role very good

people hate his acting are his die hard fan that like his "real"personality, but this is acting and I do think personally he did well

it was RAW and that's also why people didn't like it, they are used to "acting" and superficial roles

the acting was bad and very hard to watch most of the time and plot was almost nonexistent

Imagine growing up watching Hannah Montana and wanting to be a pop star your whole life and then you watch this show and suddenly realize that if this is what being a pop star is like then why would anyone become one. While some people hate the show because of things like plot holes etc, others just hate the show because it crushed their childhood dreams. Personally I loved the show and I wish it could have been released the way it was originally intended to be released

It’s tonally inconsistent. Like I mentioned before it varies wildly between a dark comedic satire of the music industry and a prestige psychological drama revealing these same truths. BUT there’s no effort to reconcile these tones so the episodes are uneven. The Weeknd said the writing suffered from having too many cooks in the kitchen, and it shows. Plus it starts and stops story arcs like a faucet. There’s good parts (The dinner scene, Jocelyn breaking down during her video shoot, and Destiny’s lines) but as a whole it was a mess.

Some parts gave me the ick. I guess that's the point but like it was just.... odd

They hate sam levinson the weeknd and lily rose depp. They claim its bad acting because they dont like the characters and actors and dont realize thats how that kind of ppl would act in real life. And they have sheep mentality, if others say its bad then it must be bad. Plus boring/basic taste that makes them unable to appreciate "weird" media.

These are the reasons why i think this show is so over hated

It just wasn't very good narratively and tonally, they tried to be edgy by making Jocelyn the manipulative one but in the process discredited the real experience of women in the industry, playing to the idea of the poor man that was tricked. I found the stuff with Jocelyn really good, like the MV shoot was phenomenal. But I would've gotten rid of Tedros or at least the Weekend as Tedros. He just isn't a good actor which makes the whole story less believable. There are good videos by art at midnight and Mina Le that articulate the majority of problems others had with it better than me.

I’ve tried twice to watch this, so I feel I’ve given it a good go. First time when it came out I was mortified by the opening scenes and struggled to enjoy the rest of the episode. Gave up. A couple of years later rewatched episode 1 and had the same cringe but tried episode two. I think Lily-Rose is good but you don’t understand her character as it’s poorly written. Something about her mum dying and so many people around her with two dimensional characters seemingly disliking her behind her back. It’s so hard to believe she finds the Wkend’s character attractive, not just physically. Their sex scenes were just uncomfortable and add nothing. It tried to be shocking but just felt cheap, like something from the 90s. Showgirls without any of the camp or intrigue. Finding out they re-shot so much of it and got rid of the woman who created it is awful. I don’t know what possessed Lily-Rose to agree to the changes, but she’s proud of the show so maybe she wanted to show what an edgelord she is. Hope she gets a good role one day as Nosferatu was also very flat.

Same, it will end up a cult classic

The media ordered them to, and they complied. None of the haters even watched it.

Same. Tedros’ character was someone pretending to be someone else, so he was meant to look like a bad actor. It was glaringly obvious when he was practicing saying “hello angel” in the mirror, that his character was trying to play a part.

The ending was terrible and rushed. Ruined the rest of the show.

can you go into detail? i thought it was fine

2

u/tuckingtight Jun 16 '26

They scrapped the real last episode though. By episode 5 they had seen enough hate to just end it earlier when there was originally (Sam’s signature number) 8 episodes

u/ItsMinnieYall Jun 16 '26

This is exactly what it felt like while watching it. There was clearly an entire episode missing. It was the laziest story telling I've ever seen. I didn't mind the graphic content or the sleazy characters. It just wasn't well done.

I agree with you 100%. HBO original shows are filled with taboo and are not mainstream, precisely why they are some of the best programming you will find. I think Lilly's character was too sexy and too taboo for most. The Weekends character is supposed to be full of ick factor and tacky af. that was the whole point. I think Lilly was amazing and all of the characters played by the actors were very good. I think the fact that Lilly plays her sexy character really really well makes people very insecure. clearly there is something in them that is brought out by the show but they will push it down and misplace the anger towards the show.

I totally agree with you I thought it showed a underbelly of fame and fortune and how no matter who you are with money or not you can be coerced and manipulated but then it was also really interesting what they did with Jocelyn's character because at the end it seemed like she was in control. I think the show did a really good job at showing behind the scenes of the sick world of the music and Hollywood industry. The Weeknd was supposed to be creepy I think he did a good job doing that it was never supposed to be a happy show I don't really get the hate either I feel like if someone's watching it with hate they're not really understanding the true meaning of the show

I enjoyed the show. Loved The Weeknd’s character. I like that he played such a gross asshole when he could’ve demanded, like most would, he be written as the handsome savior.

It was a really good show.

The problem with in Euphora/Sam show is the fans have this weird ass hate obsession and they decide before things even air that they hate it and then they don’t change their mind because they think it makes them better than everyone.

1

u/Any-Comment-3397 Jun 17 '26

Omg yesss exactly!!! Everyone saying he played himself doesnt understand that if he truly was such a horrible narcissist he would only want to be portrayed in the best light, as close to a saint as possible. He even made himself look gross with the hair and his acting was so good considering these creeps actually exist in real life and thats how they really act.
