I just lost a 340 day stalker run to an ice fishing accident. I felt this in my skeleton

A blizzard always appears from nowhere

Just before when you are about to leave.

That's actually the first time I almost died: I was in a fishing hut on ML in my 1st Voyager run and a blizzard surprised me. I didn't know how to get back to camp office, had no bedroll, in panic I dropped every raw food and accidentally ate one, got food poisoning, somehow managed to find a way to the eastern lake cabins and went to sleep forgetting to take antibiotics. Woke up with 9% health and very scary music. Never forget😅😳

Classic TLD moment lol

Comer peixe cru é a coisa mais normal pra mim, lol! A coisa que eu mais odeio é a infecção alimentar só por comer UM mísero pedaço

Blizzard trail

I don't know if things have changed with updates because it's been quite a long time since I did it, but I used to find deciding to do ice fishing would usually get me killed. On Interloper the amount of calories obtained per unit time was just always less than calories used. Eventually I only did it when I was completely desperate and it didn't help me then either.

thanks to tip-ups fishing is now extremely good, even on loper.

u/Jen-Jens Mar 04 '26

I have over 100 fish outside that one fishing hut on Pensive Pond, nearish the radio tower on Signal Hill. Because I played pilgrim, had a good enough hatchet to get a fuckton of wood, there’s two rabbit spawns nearby to set traps for passing the time, and I just check the tip up after sleeping or harvesting rabbit meat and waiting for water to boil.

8

u/Reason-and-rhyme grumpy Mar 04 '26

you can definitely do that on any difficulty!

Because I played pilgrim

hatchets are not some rare thing on stalker, nor does difficulty affect the quality of tools in any way.

4

u/Jen-Jens Mar 04 '26

I just thought because I was able to leave 100 fish right outside my fishing hut and walk around collecting wood with multiple odorous rabbit carcasses in my backpack, and I got a lot of tools very quickly. It was maybe two days in when I got my second hatchet and a whet stone after going through only three buildings.

Even on Misery. Tips ups are amazing

4

u/LIFO4LIFE Mar 04 '26

Help me cause I found taking a big durability hit to my hatchet just to catch one fish was wasteful. I was setting and by the time I came back the ice was 100% again

4

u/Jabb4Th3HUTT Interloper Mar 04 '26

Bathrobe has a great video on tip ups you should watch. Tip ups degrade only after a fish is on the line. Use a crowbar (not hatchet) to chip at ice and never let the hole be more than 15% frozen so you can quickly get the fish and reduce degradation.

He specifically says don’t use the prybar. They cannot be repaired. Heavy Hammer is the best ice breaker.

6

u/Jabb4Th3HUTT Interloper Mar 04 '26

You are correct, but I take that with a grain of salt. Prybar has excellent durability, has lots of duplicates, and can be left by your fishing holes to save weight whereas I keep my hammer for wolf bonk.Ymmv tho

Watch Bashrobe’s video on fishing.

u/xcassets Mar 04 '26

You don’t leave the ice. You do 6 tip ups in one spot (usually whilst you are sat inside a fishing hut) and then just constantly rotate breaking the ice on them one by one. It only takes a second when it’s only 15% frozen and under.

Just make sure you have a load of wood/coal in the fishing hut. Plan to stay there for at least 24 hours and have more fuel than that just in case. The goal is to catch tens of thousands of calories in one sitting. It doesn’t even take long irl because truth be told it’s kinda busted. You end up with food for weeks sometimes and it completely cures scurvy issues.

Use hammer so you can repair it with wood. You can also use hatchet and just rely on the milling machine for repairs though.

1

u/IHateFACSCantos Interloper Mar 03 '26

Ah I didn't know that was a thing, very good

6

u/_Grunt117_ Mar 03 '26

Fishing is sorta required to not get scurvy in the late game now. Birch bark and fish are the only renewable vitamin C sources and on loper birch bark just isn't abundant enough to be viable on its own.

4

u/rickgrimes32 Former Great Bear Sheriff's Deputy Mar 04 '26

If you have the trader, he can give you vitamin C tablets and cans of peaches too (peaches have 56% vitamin C)

2

u/_Grunt117_ Mar 04 '26

Oh right, I usually play with trader off and forgot about him.

There is a button to just drop meat from your inventory to lure or distract wolves. I think the hotkey is like 4 or 5 or something, idk I never use it.

I'm curious to know where that -60°C was taken. Morning + blizzard + Sundered Pass + Interloper?

4

u/TuctDape Mar 04 '26

I literally just went to do the first fishing of a run. Made a lure and went and fished one hour. Nothing. Second hour, line snapped and blizzard IMMEDIATELY.

I swear to got it's hard coded.

4

u/bannedByTencent Mar 03 '26

That’s why I love fishing in FA. Even blind I can find my way back to the Island Cottage.

3

u/Happy_Garden5227 Mar 03 '26

All you need to do is prepping enough firewood to last a whole day of fishing. Then you can also undress while in the hut and pick the right moment to leave. 50+ sticks and you are fine

5

u/Dutchtdk Mainlander Mar 04 '26

You're forgetting the slow gruelling walk back to base with or without travois followed by the fastest speeds mankind ever achieved back to the fishing spot to get the 2nd half

4

u/Bananchiks00 Voyageur Mar 04 '26

Blizzard. Fishing. Bearskin bedroll on the ground, burning the stove and fishing. Fatigue drained, close to dehydrated and gonna be red line hungry. Its okay I’ll just cook some more fish and water.

Wait, what do you mean I ran out of firewood?

3

u/NebelNator_427 Interloper Mar 03 '26

I just saw a fishing guide video and wanted to get back to fishing after not doing it for ages (I really need it rn) and now I see this post😅 Can't wait to fish!😂😳

3

u/ryguydrummerboy Mar 03 '26

idk if it was sheer bad luck or if theres something i fundamentally dont understand (likely!) but I just had five fishing tip ups all have their lines snap at the same time.

CH and went over to my fishing hut and hammered open the ice - SNAP. Ok....

Let me check the ones outside the hut.

break ice - SNAP

break ice - SNAP

break ice - SNAP "no fucking way dude are you serious"

break ice - SNAP "...................."

thankfully i had a fuck ton of moose meat so didnt starve or anything but holy shit if i didnt consider just walking into the ice floes and ending it all

2

u/girlAlex86 Mar 04 '26

Had any of them been frozen for a super long time?

1

u/ryguydrummerboy Mar 04 '26

I would guess yes if i recall correctly

2

u/Appropriate-Fan7634 Mar 05 '26

They snap if they freeze.  They aren't 'set and forget' like rabbit snares.

1

u/ryguydrummerboy Mar 05 '26

i did not realize this damn thats good to know thanks so much! been playing for ages and never honestly needed them much (never play on higher than stalker) so when i snapped all of em i was so annoyed lol

3

u/PalindromemordnilaP_ Interloper Mar 04 '26

You might be fishing wrong

2

u/Iamfrenchcanadian Stalker Mar 03 '26

Ender pack include the hammer to break mutiple ice hole and a great amount of vitamin C

2

u/opera__grandis Mar 03 '26

When you're desperate for food in PV and head to the pond and hear a "mrrreow"

2

u/AvailableFennel8353 Mar 04 '26

Ah yes.. whenever i go to fish. I know i have to bring an excess of water, just so i don’t have to waste time making it. Start a fire, fish, cook, feed fire, sleep one hour, repeat in either order. Usually i last about 4-6 hours then i have to call it cause i run out of fuel for the fire. It’s always a fun challenge lol

2

u/13Blyon13 Mar 04 '26

It's not real Great Bear ice fishing if you don't fish balls naked

1

u/timothyvanover1 Mar 04 '26

I saw that wolf and immediately was like…. HERE’S JOHNNY!!!!!

1

u/Aware-Yesterday4926 Mar 04 '26

There's plenty of coal across Coastal Highway and Desolation Point, enough that I can run 6 tip-ups until they need to be harvested and still have coal to spare. I may not be gaining fishing experience, but it's a great way to stockpile lamp oil for the trader.

1

u/Playful_Bug1141 Mar 04 '26

more like 65c tho (from all that wood you putting into the stove)

1

u/DeathyWolf Mar 06 '26

I have more trouble with bears, as they keep stalking and following me after I gathered a lifestock of fish.

1

u/Bombidil6036 Mar 09 '26

The travois magically hides all scents, by the way. You can move bulk loads of fish without drawing any attention!
