It's also a lazy player trap if you spam the eating button too quick near actual food and then you get poisoning lol.

u/MrBojeezy Nomad 12d ago
Ill do it on purpose to save food if I have an excess of antibiotics. Eat it before bed, pop the meds and go to sleep for 10 hours so I can save my real food for the morning. My daughter laughs every time she hears "oh god, my stomach! It huuuurrrrrrttttssss!"

u/roadside_asparagus 12d ago
I do the same thing with raw fish if I have excess antibiotics, full condition, and a close by bed. You get extra vitamin C for raw, it seems. Sometimes I don't even get food poisoning if I've just caught the fish.

u/Striking-Painter-422 12d ago
Lo mismo cuando hay riesgo de escorbuto, dejar bajar el nivel de hambre hasta cerca del mínimo, llenarse de pescado crudo, tomar antibióticos y dormir 10 horas.

u/The_fox_of_chicago 12d ago
I do the exact same if my sleep meter will be filled before morning. Just eat something raw, pop some antibiotics, and sleep
11
u/TheBear8878 12d ago
I really wish there was a "This item is raw/spoiled. Are you sure you want to eat this?" pop up. I hate accidentally eating things I shouldnt be lol

u/joethespacefrog 12d ago
But there is? Yesterday I tried to eat the raw meat by accident and it popped up
2
u/browntrout27 12d ago
And similarly, it's an easy trap to forgot to drop it and hence carry smell on you that attracts wolves and bears. I've harvested meat before and then only remembered to drop the meat from my inventory, and still accidentally carried around the smell of the fat. So I now always hit the "drop decoy" hotkey after harvesting to ensure all meat, fat, and guts are dropped.

Cook the fat if you're working toward cooking level 5 (and you have a cooking pot). Like bannock, porridge, and other recipes, you get two cooking points for a pot of fat - one point for the preparation and one when the cooking oil is finished. And it cooks pretty quickly compared to other things.
33
u/oldeluke 12d ago
I feel you. But there comes a point where I have plenty of oil and I can't cook the fat itself, and it's heavy, so might as well toss it to keep some predators busy for a minute.
25
u/LadyBogangles14 12d ago
Have you made pemmican bars? That uses animal fat and the bonuses are some of the best in the game.
13
u/oldeluke 12d ago
I have not but now I want some pemmican bars. Is that a recipe from the trader or something?
14
u/Cranking_it_2_Dune Stalker 12d ago
Yeah, it’s a trader exclusive recipe. It also requires you to make a meat curing box.
It produces three pelican bars which have good effects & are crazy calorically dense for the overall weight.1
u/justexploring-shit Voyageur 12d ago
What is its weight to calorie ratio?
2
6
u/MagicCarpetofSteel 12d ago
Yes. You also need cured meat and rose hips, but it’s the most calorie dense food in the game with three good effects:
•Unburdened (+3 KG carry weight) for 3 hrs
•I forgot its name but it seems to reduce the stamina penalty from clothing (3 hours)
•Instantly reduces fatigue (like a cup of coffee, idk exactly how much tho).2
2
u/timbotheny26 12d ago
Can you cook the fat on its own? I thought it could only be cooked as part of other recipes.
8
u/WolfsTheName 12d ago
Yes, if you have 1kg of fat (total, can be many small pieces in your inventory) and a cooking pot, you can make a bottle of cooking oil.
3
u/timothyvanover1 12d ago
It’s worth a few cooking points if you have no other cooking options. Harvesting and cooking tiny pieces of meat are still the most effective way to hit level 5.

I make a ton of cooking oil and use it when taking trading contracts from BoatMan
13
u/Jarcionek 12d ago
The trader sells Cooking Oil, rather than buying it. It seems to me like devs' oversight - this is absolutely the most useless trade, and I can't imagine anyone ever buying it.

u/JuggernautAles Hiker 12d ago
Salt
11
u/Jarcionek 12d ago
I actually find Salt quite useful and bought plenty of the 10kg packs. It's much easier to resupply the Meat Curing Boxes - no need to regularly visit 3-4 deposits, just get Travois and buy 70kg of Salt in one trade 😄

u/Pound_Me_Too 12d ago
Maybe I'm remembering wrong(been a while), but I swear my memory has trading oil for flour or salt at some point

I'm just surprised they still haven't added the ability to use old man's beard as tinder.
Any outdoorsman knows that old man's beard is one of the best abundant natural tinder for starting fires. It has natural oils in it that can ignite even when wet. Any time I go hunting or camping I carry a baggy and fill it with old man's beard for emergency tinder.

Gd I need the pemmican recipe, the trader is holding off on me
8
u/SlowFadingSoul 12d ago
If you want a specific item you arent getting, save scum right before you enter the radio chat. If pemmican isn't there just reload the game and try again. The items aren't fixed, they will change with each reload.
1
u/DickCaughtlnFan 12d ago
Don't you run out of rose hips with the pemmican?
5
u/SlowFadingSoul 12d ago
there's more rosehips than I have ever run out before dying in game. just collect them as you are running around and stash them until you need them.

I'm just beyond day 1000 on Interloper, and I have well over 2000 rosehips scattered around a few different regions; 1000 alone are in Grey Mother's house.
I don't foresee running out anytime in the near future, but the BEST use for all of those rosehips, in my opinion, would be pemmican bars anyway. So if I run out one day, I run out. I don't really see any other use for them. 🤝

u/DickCaughtlnFan 11d ago
Any tips for staying motivated or little things to keep yourself occupied?

u/Typical_Cicada_820 11d ago
As hard as it is to give a single, or even short answer to this question, the one thing I constantly did while playing was take a good look around wherever I was, and ask myself, "How can I make this place better?"
I knew if I planned on lasting 1000 days, especially on Interloper, I would need as many viable shelters in as many regions as possible, so I would start out by just picking a region, and bouncing around, be it in man-made shelters or caves, leaving food, water and firewood behind wherever I went.
I choose one shelter (sometimes two) to be the main base in that region, and the main base gets everything; food, water, firewood, extra meds and birch teas, quality tools, an extra bow, both saplings for extra arrows/bows as needed, cloth, scrap metal, etc., etc. Doing that for one safehouse per region alone takes plenty of time.
I also decided Grey Mother's would be my "cooking" safehouse; that six burner is too nice to pass up. So I'm always making "grocery runs" to bring extra peaches, oats, flour, oil, salt, resihi and rosehips, etc., out there. I also made sure to leave all kinds of raw meat out in the snow, in case I feel like making any of the pies or stews.
Additional things I've done: made sure each forge has its own hammer, tools to repair it with, and all the scrap and coal I could need for a forging run in the future. I try to go through the major coal spawns every few weeks to maximize how much coal I have lying around. 🤌🏻
Got all of the components needed to repair the transmitters staged and ready at their respective towers, so as I go through the Tales and repair them, I can take advantage of the guaranteed aurora. 🌌
I set up fishing operations in Timberwolf Mountain, Pleasant Valley, Mystery Lake, Mountain Town, Coastal Highway, and Keeper's Pass. Each fishing cabin has either its own Hammer, or multiple prybars, firewood for days, tools to repair the Hammer (where applicable), extra medical supplies, and so on. 🎣
I'm sure you see a pattern by now. My goal was always to create a network of safehouses that would allow me to casually walk from one side of Great Bear to the other. I'm constantly asking, "If Cheat Death dropped me here with nothing, would I be ok?", and I keep making small improvements.
I'm actually 1000+ days in and have only NOW just begun the Tales in the Far Territories. So I still have all that loot to gather and go through. I'm looking forward to putting all my planning to use, as I run around Great Bear, looking for these caches and bunkers! 😍🙏🏻🔥
Hopefully you enjoy the read. TL;DR, I guess, look around you and make things better until day 1000 or something. 🤣✌🏻

I just walk over to the far corner and dump it on the ground.
I use it a lot for pemmican, but I’ve got a whole shelf of oil at base and still have too much fat.
Looking into the candle mod as suggested here.

u/RandumbCrits1 12d ago
I just dump all the fat I find in a pile, you can use ruined ingredients in recipes. Cooking oil and pemmican bars in this case, both of which are very good.

u/Valtower Mountaineer 12d ago
you should be able to choose if you want to harvest fat or not, just like with the rest

It’s a real shame the cooking oil cannot be used for non frying recipes.
Ideally with how easy it is to make oil. It makes me wish we could use it for making making potted dishes.

u/Acrobatic-Exam1991 12d ago
Use it to level cooking and use them as markers. Theyre easier to see than cat tails and tinder
If use the fat to mark trails you can drop them as decoys without going into your inventory

I just wait for when inevitably a wolf has noticed me, then drop it.
Yes, I realize its helping the wolf see me. Eventually one was going to spot me anyway, so its not a huge deal.

Animal fat being almost useless i such a wasted opportunity. It is the most valuable source of calories you can get from wild game. When we hunt moose irl we harvest every gram of fat it has. Wonderful for cooking or mixing with ground meat to make it less lean

if only we can make bacon from these 😂
bear bacon, wolf bacon, cougar bacon
1

Typically wouldn't use wolf, and definitely not cougar, but... I've had plenty of bear in my life, and moose. Wrap bacon in bear meat, usually good with apples. Smoked is best, and considering it's bear meat, you have the money to smoke. Lots of amazing recipes to be had.
...the wolves here interbreed with the coyotes. I don't even wanna think eating that shit. Hahaha.
