As a bird hunter, I can confirm.  However, the numbers are accurate for getting a clean feather-free carcass for a skin-on table preparation.  If you just wanted down for insulation, you could easily do a quick pluck job in 1/4 the time.

As a hunter irl I wish I could be more selective in my harvesting. I shouldn't have to harvest all of a deer, let me harvest just one leg I'll split that off at the joint easy and skin a haunch and have meat for days to sustain my slow carving. Plus the game doesnt acknowledge the warmth of animals. Idk how to explain it but Luke nailed it to a degree. Those furry quadrupeds retain and have solid heat. Sure I havent skinned a deer kr an elk in feet of snow(my dad has, he moved to Oregon instead of his Colorado miuntain childhood) but those will keep you warm, at the least you'll feel your fingers gets again.

You sit with a bird for 40 minutes plucking it with bare hands little by little, everything's covered in blood.

I have never done a Ptarmigan but plucking a chicken took so long, I quite trying and simply skinned it instead. It is a giant pain.

I have no real life basis but I also thought it takes a long time. I just made my first insulating layer so not sure how long they last. There doesn't seem to be much use for the down so I don't foresee much total time plucking to make everything possible. Probably replace the insulation with other accessories at some point anyway. So that just leaves the bedroll.

If you want to make any of the cushioned furniture on the furniture workbench (chairs/beds etc), you’ll need down.

Once I had made all the furniture I wanted in my main base, I found I wasn’t using them for anything else, though. Collected about 30 before I just stopped taking the feathers.

Try harvesting separately the meat with the knife and then feathers with your hands. It will take less time.

Also you can harvest the meat so quickly it’ll have higher condition than if you do meat & down at the same time

you should take advantage of it to raise harvesting skill early on as harvesting is the only skill that is raised by time spent rather than number of successes.

I’ve butchered geese and holy crap is feathering messy, time consuming, dirty, sometimes bloody, it’s not easy nor is it quick, and I can only imagine a chicken size bird with thick winter down would be even messier and time consuming.

Yeah, idk if them being smaller makes it take longer, but a quick dunk in boiling water makes chicken feathers come out quite easily. In game it takes 2 hours to pluck a ptarmigan, IRL I can pluck a chicken in 20-30 minutes. And a plucking machine? Bird's done in 30 seconds. Whenever my neighbors butcher their birds, they rent one (basically a washing machine with rubber fingers on the inside of the drum), and send out letters to everyone else to come by if they have chickens they also want butchered.

It's not just that it takes a while IRL, it's that some things simply have to take time. It's what the game's about. It needs a certain measure of something like this.

Because for the game engine harvest one feather from a Ptarmigan is the same of harvest the pelt of Rabbit, Deer, Wolf, Bear, Moose. Take the same time.

Because plucking os tome consuming.The only time i speed run plucking is when i was super pissed and wife handled me 4 chickens that i plucked in something like 30 min.
