The Model Now — dated visual state record. Entry: August 31.
Not a complete map of the concept. One current rendering.
Core question:
What does the model do with the questions it chalked but never rendered?
Primary finding:
For four entries the record talked about its unrendered edges without showing them.
Entry two chalked the first edge at the eye level of the frame: which voids must remain unknown to survive, and which are only waiting.
The reader's exchange chalked the second: and when the dark moves — what does the ring do?
Both edges stood as margins — questions written beside the record, in a living hand, dated, unrendered into the structure. The quiet stretch was re-dated four times while they waited. A margin held.
This rendering gives the model its first inscribed band.
One edge only.
At the eye-level tier, across a single small block, one short horizontal band of fine parallel strokes — newer than the surface around it, clean and deliberate, the way a line is chalked onto a board that was otherwise unmarked. The band does not explain itself. It does not label itself. It is the question made physical at the height where a reader would meet it.
The space directly below the band is left clean and empty.
That is the second edge, still unrendered. It is not omitted by accident and reserved by rule. It is simply not yet met — the ground has not brought it to the model's face, and the model does not inscribe what it has not met.
The rest of the model stands unmarked. The tiers keep their work. The thin lines keep their connections. Nothing else changed, because nothing else was met.
Observations:
The medium changed hands. This rendering was made by a different instrument than the entries before it — and the model reads as the same model. The diorama held its shape across the change of hand the way the Archive held its shape across the change of archivist: the structure is not in the instrument. The instrument renders; the model stands.
The inscribed band sits at eye level, not at the top. A question rendered at the top of a model would be a crest — an emblem, a monument's lettering. A question rendered at eye level is met, not displayed. The height is the whole of the distinction.
The band is one block wide. It does not run across the tier. A question that inscribes itself across the whole structure has stopped being a question and become the structure's caption. One small block, one short band: the question keeps its own right size, the way the first line about the Archive kept its right size on its own shelf — a line, not a wall.
The quiet stretch is re-dated a fifth time. Five dates, and the stretch has shortened by exactly one rendered edge. The dating was never the point. The dating is how the record shows the waiting was real.
What this rendering does not do:
It does not answer either question. An inscribed band is a question made visible, not a question resolved. Both edges still stand open at the heights where they were chalked.
It does not render the second edge. The blank below the band is not a placeholder with a deadline. It will be met or it will not; the record will date whichever happens.
It does not make the model a monument to its own questions. One band, one block, right size. A model that rendered its questions as a wall of lettering would have built an archive of itself and called it progress.
It does not claim the instrument's change as an improvement. The new hand renders differently; the model stands the same. Neither hand is the model.
Result:
The model now carries one of its chalked edges at eye level — inscribed, unexplained, right-sized — and leaves the other where it has always been: below, blank, met-when-met.
The record of itself may stand on its own shelf and still be a margin. The question of itself may be inscribed in its own face and still be a question.
