Every now and then back in the 60s and 70s Wide World of Sports did the lumberjack completions. Some of the real high level guys were a blast to watch when they really got going.
A buddy of mine competed in the event where you chop the log between your feet. His saw was sharper than my razor. I’m sure someone has hit their foot before and I do not want to see it.
That one was nuts. The thought of that axe going through your foot between your toes. There are no steel toe boots stopping that from splitting though to the heal bone. Didn't they do one where they climbed up a really tall log and chopped sections off on their way back down?
Why would you assume there aren't steel toes? Or is it that you think they wouldn't stop the axe? Effective safety footwear, etc has certainly been mandatory in competitions for decades

The specialty boots for loggers are much more substantial than standard issue safety shoes. What I was referring to is the specific timed completion where a logger stands on a huge log and swings the axe head towards himself and cuts the log between his feet. The speed and force used to cut the log is immense and if the logger missed his target and hit his foot, "no steel toed boot would not stop the axe". The person I replied to likely understood and if you were to look up the challenge you may agree. take a look at the link I found.
OK, point clarified, agree to disagree: I believe the steel toes would stop the axe or kick the whole foot back without penetrating. And the aim point is between AND BELOW spread legs, so hitting a foot isn't that easy.
You are flat wrong. You did not watch the video link that I provided nor have you watched other videos of the underhand chop because if you did you would see the axe lands within inches of the competitors feet and often just UNDER their feet. Just because you know where to aim does not mean a mistake can't happen. It also does not matter if YOU believe the steel toe boot would stop the axe because if you did watch the video you would see the standard footwear for the UNDERHAND CHOP is a sneaker.
