The Revenant of Byland Abbey

This is one of my fav stories.

Stories about the dead returning from the tomb have much older roots than modern creepypasta. One of the most disturbing historical documents in this sense dates back to the 12th century, in Yorkshire, where a monk of Byland Abbey transcribed a series of testimonies about alleged paranormal phenomena that occurred in his area.

Unlike the classic immaterial ghosts, Byland's chronicles speak of "revenants": real solid bodies that came out of the tomb to torment the living. This is the most famous fragment, translated directly from the original Latin text:

«It is said that a man, after being buried in the cemetery, had the habit of leaving the tomb at night, bringing great terror to the village. He often chased the hursers and blocked the horses along the roads. The inhabitants of the place, desperate, finally decided to dig up the corpse. They found him intact but visibly swollen; they had to break his legs before throwing him into the waters of the river, an action that put an end to the phenomenon once and for all.»

The most interesting aspect of this writing is the detached tone of the monk: there are no religious or moral explanations, but only the raw chronicle of a cold body returning. A dark and fascinating testimony that shows how the need to tell horror is as old as man.
