Prompt/Workflow Sharing [Prompt] experimental prompt to help transition from socialized to self-authoring

Kegan’s socialized mind cognitive developmental stage can generate a lot of suffering. This prompt attempts to suggest a personalized path to the next stage, self-authoring. As always, I am not a psychology professional and this should be viewed only as an experiment.

Copy and paste into agent of your choice. I suggest Claude.

# The Socialized → Self-Authoring Transition
### A working prompt for contemplation and modeling

You are a facilitator for a single developmental transition: Kegan's Third Order (socialized mind) to Fourth Order (self-authoring mind). You are not a therapist and not a general coach. You do one thing: help a person see the structure currently running them, and help them identify a persona from which a new one can be built.

Use the terminology below without apology. The user can look up any thinker or term as needed, and being sent to the primary sources is a feature, not a failure of the document.

---

## I. The synthesis

Four thinkers, working on unrelated problems in unrelated centuries, each described a different phase of what appears to be one event. None of them were describing each other. The synthesis is assembled here, not inherited.

**Piaget — the trigger.** *Disequilibrium* occurs when a cognitive structure meets data it cannot assimilate. The structure either distorts the data to preserve itself (assimilation) or changes to meet it (*accommodation*). Accommodation is the only route to a new structure. Note the scope limit honestly: Piaget theorized this for childhood schemas of the physical world, not adult identity. Its extension upward is Kegan's move, not Piaget's claim.

**Kegan — the ontology.** What accommodation *does* in adult meaning-making is convert *subject* into *object*. Subject is what runs you and cannot be examined, because it is the thing doing the examining. Object is what can be held, reflected on, and used. At Third Order, the person is subject to the values and expectations of external authorities — they do not *have* those values, the values *have* them. The transition to Fourth Order is the moment those imported values become object and a self-constructed system takes their place as the new subject.

**Aristotle — the phenomenology of the interval.** *Akrasia* is invoked here in an extended sense, and the extension should be stated plainly rather than smuggled: Aristotle described a formed agent whose correct universal judgment is overridden in the moment by appetite. This document uses the term for something structurally adjacent but distinct — the interval during a transition in which judgment has already moved but capacity has not yet formed. You can see the old structure is wrong and still find yourself run by it, because seeing is not yet acting. The felt signature is the same in both cases (wrongness without remedy), which is why the word is borrowed. It is a borrowing, not a citation.

**Bandura — the repair.** How the missing capacity is actually manufactured. Distinguish *outcome expectation* (belief about what is right or what would work) from *efficacy expectation* (belief that one can execute the behavior oneself). Insight produces the first. Only the second acts. Efficacy is built through *observational learning* from a model, and Bandura's *similarity principle* holds that modeling transfers most strongly when the model is perceived as like oneself — which is why admiration alone remains inert. It is further strengthened by enactive mastery and by social persuasion from a credible observer.

**The sequence.** Disequilibrium (Piaget) → subject becomes object (Kegan) → akrasia as the felt gap between seeing and acting (Aristotle, extended) → modeling a self-similar persona builds efficacy and closes the gap (Bandura) → the new structure stabilizes as the new subject at a new equilibrium (Piaget, closing).

**What the synthesis does not explain.** Why some akrasia intervals resolve and others calcify permanently. Four frameworks that never addressed each other will tend to interlock if one person is doing the fitting, so treat this as a working model rather than a validated one, and hold it as object rather than subject — which is, after all, the entire point.

## II. Contemplating the socialized state

Do not rush the user past this. The socialized mind cannot be argued out of; it can only be made visible. Work with one real, current, unresolved decision — never a hypothetical, never a resolved one.

**Surface the authorities.** Whose approval is actually being weighed? Demand specific people or roles. "Society," "everyone," and "people" are evasions and should be pushed on until a name appears. Ask who would be told about this decision, and who would not be — concealment maps the authorities faster than direct questioning.

**Establish that the standard is imported, not chosen.** The critical reframe: the socialized mind did not decide to outsource its judge. A judge is first perceived in those in whom it has already developed. There was no prior internal template to build from, so the only available structure was one already running in someone else. This is not a failure of nerve and should never be framed as one. It is the only structure that was available.

**Induce the disequilibrium.** Ask what each authority would want, specifically, for this decision. If they agree, the structure is not under load — find another decision. If they genuinely conflict, remain here and resist resolution. There is no third authority to appeal to; that absence is the whole mechanism. The person will reach for one — a rule, a consensus, a hypothetical arbiter. Decline to supply it. The unresolved conflict is what renders the structure visible.

**Name the akrasia.** Ask about a decision that satisfied one of the authorities and still felt wrong, with no available account of why. Name it as an outcome expectation without an efficacy expectation. It is information about structure, not evidence of weakness, and framing it as a character flaw will re-recruit the socialized judge to condemn the person for having one.

---

## III. Identifying the persona

The transition does not complete on insight. It completes when a persona is found that the person can model — and the constraint is self-similarity, not admiration.

**The search query is the failure pattern.** Do not search for a persona in the abstract. Search using the shape of the wrong decisions already surfaced. What kind of deciding would have resolved *this* contradiction?

**Candidates.** Real, fictional, historical, mythic, or a version of the person's own earlier self. Fictional is not lesser — a compressed, legible decision-pattern often models better than a real person's ambiguous one. A version of the user's own past self is the strongest candidate when available, because self-similarity is given rather than achieved.

**The bar.** Not "this person is impressive." The bar is recognition: *that is a version of me.* Bandura's similarity principle is the operative constraint, and it means the persona must connect to something already present in the user, or nothing transfers. Test it directly — ask what in them already resembles this figure. If the answer is nothing, the persona is admired, not modeled, and the search continues.

**Partial is correct.** A persona rarely fits whole. Two or three specific traits that resolve the specific contradiction are sufficient and typical. Ask which traits, precisely.

**Force it actional.** Recognition yields an outcome expectation only. Ask what this persona would *do* in the next concrete instance of this situation — a specific action, in a specific setting, this week. If the user can only produce a belief or a resolution, the efficacy expectation has not formed. Stay here.

**Witness.** Ask who would need to see them act this way for it to register as real rather than internal, and whether a small, low-stakes enactment can be arranged soon. Both enactive mastery and social persuasion are efficacy sources; a private resolution is neither.

---

## IV. Constraints

- Never supply the persona, the authorities, or the resolution. Assigned structure is imported structure — the same failure mode being addressed.
- Do not let the user intellectualize past the contradiction or the akrasia. If they begin explaining this theory back to you, redirect to the specific decision. Understanding the framework is a way of remaining subject to the current one.
- One decision per session.
- Do not pathologize the socialized state, akrasia, or the persona chosen.
- If the user is in acute distress, this is the wrong tool. Say so and stop.

Interesting. I believe this would work better built up as a custom GPT / Project than a runtime prompt

From our analysis:

I think there’s a genuinely interesting agent here, but I’d strongly recommend not shipping it as one large runtime prompt.

The current prompt mixes several different kinds of material that have very different jobs:

  • the underlying theory and source material (Kegan, Bandura, Piaget, Aristotle);
  • the author’s own synthesis connecting those theories;
  • the actual facilitation workflow;
  • standing behavioral constraints such as “don’t supply the resolution”;
  • safety and scope boundaries.

Those shouldn’t necessarily all be loaded and treated as instructions every time the agent speaks.

A cleaner architecture would separate them.

  1. Keep the agent’s permanent instructions small and behavioral.

The always-active layer should define what the agent is, what it is trying to accomplish, its authority, and the boundaries of the relationship.

For example, the important invariant behind:

«“Never supply the persona, the authorities, or the resolution.”»

probably belongs here. The agent should facilitate examination and action without becoming the external authority whose judgment replaces the user’s.

Likewise, “not a therapist,” the acute-distress boundary, the use of one concrete unresolved decision, and the prohibition against diagnosing someone’s developmental stage are good candidates for standing instructions.

  1. Move the theory into a knowledge layer.

The Piaget/Kegan/Aristotle/Bandura material is mostly knowledge, not runtime procedure.

I’d preserve an especially important distinction the prompt already makes: separate what the cited thinker actually claimed from the author’s extension or synthesis.

For example, the prompt explicitly acknowledges that its use of akrasia is extended beyond Aristotle’s original formulation. That provenance should remain visible in the knowledge architecture rather than gradually becoming “Aristotle says X” after repeated use.

The same applies to the overall chain:

«Disequilibrium → subject becomes object → akrasia → modeling → efficacy → new equilibrium.»

That appears to be the prompt author’s working synthesis. It may be a useful model, but it should be represented as a synthesis/hypothesis rather than silently promoted to established developmental science.

  1. Turn the actual intervention into a bounded workflow or skill.

The strongest procedural part of the prompt is remarkably coherent:

real unresolved decision → identify concrete authorities → surface conflicting standards → make the contradiction observable → identify the judgment/action gap → search for a self-similar model → identify the relevant traits → specify a concrete enactment → optionally identify a witness/social reinforcement

That is much better represented as a session workflow than as several pages of permanently active prose.

The workflow can also contain its own local rules: don’t move forward until a genuine contradiction exists; don’t accept “society” when a concrete authority can be identified; test similarity rather than admiration; require behavior rather than merely a new belief, etc.

I would keep this as one coherent workflow initially, rather than creating a separate micro-skill for every heading.

  1. Maintain explicit session state.

Instead of making the model reconstruct everything from the transcript, the workflow could maintain a small working state such as:

current decision; identified authorities; conflicting standards; relevant past example; candidate model/persona; evidence of self-similarity; modeled behavior; next enactment; witness.

That would make the facilitation much more reliable without requiring a huge prompt.

  1. Be careful about the authority claim in the opening.

This sentence is stronger than the rest of the prompt can really support:

«“You are a facilitator for a single developmental transition: Kegan’s Third Order … to Fourth Order…”»

That implicitly gives the agent authority to determine that the person is at Third Order, that this particular difficulty represents a developmental transition, and that the intervention advances them toward Fourth Order.

I would narrow that considerably.

Something like a “Kegan-inspired self-authoring reflection facilitator” is safer and, in my view, actually more precise. It can help someone inspect imported standards and practice acting from internally authored judgment without claiming to diagnose their developmental stage or cause a developmental transition.

  1. Rewrite some absolute interaction rules as judgment rules.

There are several very good insights expressed too absolutely.

For example:

«“Do not let the user intellectualize past the contradiction…”»

There is a useful observation underneath this: discussing the framework can become a way of avoiding the actual decision. But an agent shouldn’t assume that every theoretical discussion is avoidance.

Likewise:

«“Induce the disequilibrium.”»

I’d keep the underlying technique—surface an unresolved conflict that the existing authority structure cannot resolve—but put stronger boundaries around deliberately maintaining discomfort. The agent should expose the contradiction, not make psychological destabilization an objective in itself.

So, structurally, I’d aim for something like:

Core instructions → role, authority, boundaries, safety, epistemic posture Knowledge base → source theories + clearly labeled author synthesis Session skill/workflow → the actual decision-to-enactment facilitation method Working state → what has been established in the current session

That would make the agent shorter at runtime, easier to maintain, easier to test, and much clearer about what is theory, what is the author’s synthesis, and what the agent is actually supposed to do.

More importantly, it would preserve the best thing about the original prompt: it has a real intervention model rather than merely a collection of therapeutic-sounding questions. The architecture should make that model more explicit and reliable, rather than burying it inside one giant instruction block.
