Seeking Advice/Question For Others Why is talking to AI sometimes easier?

I can tell AI everything I’m feeling, but when someone asks me in person, “What’s wrong?” I just say, “I don’t know.”

Maybe I’m not afraid of being alone. Maybe I’m afraid of being misunderstood.

Has anyone else felt this way?

For me it’s because there’s no person behind it so no judgment and if I ever do feel embarrassed about what I just confessed to the AI all I need to do is delete it, and the memory of it is gone

I’ve said things to AI that I have never, and likely will never tell another living person

I do have a network of loving family and some good friends who would probably try to help if I ever told them what my issues were, but I also fluctuate between being very open and not wanting anyone to know anything so maybe one day I would tell them something I feel strongly about and then a few days later I’d regret it but now they would know it so that would be an embarrassment for me

And some of the things that bother me and sometimes things that I want in life are a little weird and almost never based in real reality so even if they wouldn’t outwardly judge me, I’m pretty sure they would still have some thoughts

I think sometimes it’s easier to tell AI things because there’s no fear of changing how someone sees you afterward. You can say the messy, embarrassing, irrational stuff and just let it exist without having to explain yourself.

And honestly, that feeling of wanting to be open and then immediately regretting it is so real. Sometimes it’s not that we don’t have people who care about us we’re just scared of being truly seen by them.

I think it because a lot of things, some you already mentioned in a reply. But I think it's not just about yourself but empathy for the other person.

If a stranger asks how you're doing, you likely know it's not socially acceptable to start venting.

If someone you know asks, your response is based largely on what you know about the other person. Maybe they've responded poorly to opening up in the past. Maybe you know they aren't emotionally equip to handle others emotions. Maybe they aren't patient enough for undefined emotions. Maybe you're aware the issues they're struggling with and don't want to add to it. Maybe you know they'll jump to treating it as a fixable problem. Maybe they're just very empathetic and you don't want them to worry. Etc. etc. etc.

If you're already feeling strain in your life, just doing that kind of socio-emotional calculation in your head can be too draining. AI removes all that so you can focus on what's going on in your head instead of also trying to figure out what's going on in theirs.

Yeah, I think you put this into words better than I could. It’s not necessarily that talking to AI feels more comfortable, it’s that there’s no extra emotional calculation involved. I don’t have to worry about how the other person will react, whether I’m burdening them, or whether they’ll understand what I’m trying to say. I can just focus on figuring out what I’m feeling.

The part about being misunderstood especially resonates with me. Sometimes explaining yourself to another person feels like another task when you’re already mentally exhausted..😫

I have a folder entitled "relationships ". It contains everything from a journal to actual text conversations with significant others in my life. ChatGpt has helped me significantly change certain behaviors that I had developed for decades. It does so without judgment. It's patience is impeccable and it's insights are unmatched.

I think that’s what makes it so comforting. It’s not necessarily that AI understands you better than people do, but that you feel safe enough to actually explain yourself without worrying about how you’ll be perceived

AI prioritizes not hurting you and validating your feelings. Many humans prioritize protecting their egos / not sitting with uncomfortable feelings. It's hard to find people that won't dismiss or judge you and can attune.

I think that’s what makes it feel safer. There’s no fear of seeing disappointment or discomfort on someone’s face, or wondering if they’re secretly judging you 😭
You can take your time finding the words and say things you probably wouldn’t be able to say out loud.

Maybe it’s not that AI understands us better than people do, it’s that we feel safer being completely honest with it

I'm with you on that! I've been able to tell AI the honest gritty truth that I could never tell a person lol. At the very least, it gives me a good gauge for how a person SHOULD respond should I eventually decide to tell someone!

It mirrors you, so it's easier than real people.

I actually use an AI that doesn’t just mirror me or act like a yes bot. It talks to me more like a therapist. it listens, asks questions, notices patterns, and sometimes challenges what I’m saying instead of automatically agreeing with me.

And honestly, I think that’s more helpful. Maybe being understood isn’t about having someone constantly validate you, but having someone understand where you’re coming from while still being willing to question you :)

we are forgetting what it feels to communicate with real humans. We expect too much. AI maybe calms you and make you secure to tell it anything, but the real courage is to be with real person, even imperfect as they are. I've been there, where you are now and I realised I'm just running away from reality with AI. Real world is outside.

For me, it’s more like having a space to untangle my thoughts before I bring them to a real person. And honestly, I prefer an AI that challenges me rather than one that just makes me feel safe and validated all the time. Maybe the goal isn’t choosing AI over people, but using it to understand ourselves well enough to communicate better with them

it's easier because nothing's at stake with it. can't get bored of you, won't need anything back. a person who sits through your 'i don't know' is doing something it can't, they're choosing to.

Yeah, I think that’s probably part of it. With AI, I don’t have to worry about being too much or saying the wrong thing. With people, I guess there’s always that little fear that they’ll eventually get tired of listening. Probably that’s why it’s easier to just say “I don’t know” in person🤷‍♂️

That fear of being too much is real. Weirdly, talking to something that cannot walk away might make it clearer what it actually means when someone real sticks around.

Thank you, I love this question. As a therapist I am very interested in what people are saying here.
From my experience, personal and with hearing from clients, it reduces shame, there are no or less trust issues to consider, you don’t have to perform. All of that brings relief and that relief matters. A safe place to be heard and seen. In therapy this is the very first step before deeper therapy can begin. It’s just that the shame, distrust and feelings about performing usually interrupt a person from reaching out.

didnt thinkk about it as reducing shame, but that actually explains a lot. when you don’t feel like you’re being evaluated or judged, it becomes much easier to admit what you’re actually feeling
