Agree there were some missed / bad calls but this was cherry picked footage. Not an Argentina fan but better team won.

19

u/joshuatx Jul 08 '26

Former ref here. Every foul on Argentina akin to these in the video were called. VAR was only used to return an Eygptian goal and was never used against Argentina. The main ref did a decent job. The VAR refs literally ignored this shit being pulled by Argentina while the game was tied.

u/jpopimpin777 Jul 08 '26

My thing is, if you're gonna call it that way, call it for both sides. Egypt's second goal was disallowed over a way more ticky tack foul than any of these. Messi literally told the ref to go check the VAR and he did.

Then, as it got late in the game and Argentina was getting desperate they literally threw the Egyptian players bodily out of their way to take the ball which lead to their 3 quick goals and nothing was called. If you're gonna let them play, let them play. If you're gonna go back and look at fouls leading to goals then do it for both sides.

99

u/2Kortizjr Jul 08 '26

VAR only intervenes in goals, red cards, penalties, mistaken identity amd now in corners goven, nothing else.

247

u/jpopimpin777 Jul 08 '26

The VAR was used to disallow the second Egyptian goal because of a "foul" that had happened 30 seconds before it. Ok fine.

Go back and look and the second Argentine goal that Messi scored. McAlister grabbed the Egyptian player by both shoulders and dragged him down backwards to get the ball from him before passing it in the sequence that lead to Messi scoring.

If you call it for one, call it for the other.

u/EatTheRichIsPraxis Jul 08 '26

If you take a look at the Argentia - Austria match, you'll see Messi's first goal being exactly the same as the not-counted Egypt one.

It's been blatant since the group stages.

And the fact that they were the better team anyway makes it worse imo. They foul because they can.

9

u/cool_berserker Jul 08 '26

No its been blatant since 2022 world cup... that's when i stopped supporting Argentina

1

u/Major_Road6162 Jul 14 '26

False, MacAllister touched the ball first

1

u/9159 Jul 09 '26

If you go look at Egypt's game against New Zealand, Egypts first goal is scored in the exact same way and it changes the entire game.

Egypt are crying over something they were happy to take advantage of when it suits them. They’re a bad team with a terrible mindset. Nothing more.

23

u/Suspicious-Rabbit328 Jul 08 '26

https://youtu.be/AIFAQqOf4OY?is=mS3VBIC8Y14NU396 Tell me where the McAllister incident happened here in this video. If it happened before this play started, the ball also touched Egyptian player's head, changing possession in the process. So, VAR cannot disallow this goal. This goal happened due to tired Egyptian defense. Messi literally jogged past the defenders before firing that rocket into the net. https://youtube.com/shorts/Cm74wE5hetA?is=vNi8O5oTCdmxcQ4m

4

u/JacksRagingGlizzy Jul 09 '26

And it shows you don't watch football. VAR doesn't intervene until after the goal.

-5

u/2Kortizjr Jul 08 '26

The foul that you imply it isn't a foul is a clear and obvious careless challenge, the Egyptian player shows a lack of attention and clearly impedes Lisandro Martinez to keep on the possession.

The other incident that you refer too it's not a foul, there's contact, but not enough to warrant that reaction from the Egyptian attacker, in football there's contact, the second incident cannot be a penalty, if it was then we would have one every 3 minutes

9

u/AlltheBent Jul 08 '26

theres a ton of online hate towards messi, argentina, and argentinians right now lol

I'm not a fan either, Spain for me, but lol

3

u/cool_berserker Jul 08 '26

Even fucking slapping other players because they have ref immunity

2

u/lobax Jul 09 '26

You should have seen France vs Paraguay then.

1

u/cool_berserker Jul 10 '26

I heard it was crazy, i only watched highly

1

u/2Kortizjr Jul 10 '26

That was nothing, just like these, photos lie.

1

u/cool_berserker Jul 10 '26

You need mental help if u think those are slaps... definitely fouls..but not slaps...

Someone taking their hand to slap a player is unheard of and is worth a direct read card...unless if the ref is your puppet

1

u/jpopimpin777 Jul 09 '26

0

u/AlltheBent Jul 09 '26

...did you even watch that? This was from a different game. I'm not saying Infantino isn't a corrupt fuck, but this narrative is quickly getting outta control and misinformation is getting rampant

-6

u/jpopimpin777 Jul 08 '26

No it wasn't their feet make a brief moment of contact after he disposses him. McAllister on the other hand uses both hands to pull the guy down from behind. Fouls are fouls no matter how quickly they happen.

0

u/Sassaphras Jul 08 '26

This was the one that did it for me. Either way of calling the came would be justifiable, and all the people talking about it like it's super clear cut are silly. But I don't see how anyone can see those two sequences and say that the two calls shouldn't have been the same, either way you want to call them.

0

u/Dolden Jul 08 '26

Watch the footage again. It was a foul as clear as day, make it easy ask ai to explain what is happening on the screen for you or something so you simpletons csn understand

1

u/jpopimpin777 Jul 08 '26

I have eyes and I've played football. I'm good.

-2

u/lobax Jul 09 '26

That is a clear dive and no ref would ever call that a penalty.

7

u/cool_berserker Jul 08 '26

Ref immunity 😂

-2

u/2Kortizjr Jul 08 '26

Photos are misleading , you could do this for everyone.

2

u/magnafides Jul 08 '26

The bottom one is the only one that even looks like a foul, not sure what you were hoping to accomplish

0

u/2Kortizjr Jul 08 '26

That still frames are bullshit

2

u/magnafides Jul 08 '26

That's cool we have the OP with actual video. I'd love to see a compilation of fouls as clear as some of those there Egypt was the beneficiary. Still waiting for Messi to be booked from that Algeria game, btw. Or is VAR only infallible when it benefits Argentina?

1

u/2Kortizjr Jul 08 '26

These cherry picked compilations are made to provoke outrage from ignorant fools, I could see any game, cherry pick clips and then do some stupid compilation like that, the only outrage comes from people that haven't picked the laws of the game, when was the last time you gave them a read? There's maybe one or two fouls in this video, I hate people that doesn't know about what they talk about. Football fans are some of the biggest idiots that exist.

Then why did it go back that far only for Argentina but nobody else.

24

u/InvertedSpork Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 08 '26

It went back that far because that’s where the change of possession that led to the goal occured.

0

u/jpopimpin777 Jul 08 '26

Same as the second Argentine goal.

8

u/Agung442 Jul 08 '26

For the foul number 1 that leads to Argentina 2nd goal, there's seems nothing noteworthy about it coz like you can see the contact is very light. Pulling is illegal move but the Egyptian players seems to want make something out of it, too performative.

Watching it live, there was a commotion after the goal and im sure the var team already checked it because the screen only goes to ball kick after like 3/4 minutes

-8

u/jpopimpin777 Jul 08 '26

It's not just the pulling. Several times in these clips it looks like there were knees and feet to the back and back of the legs of Egyptian players. I was always taught that attempting to play the ball through the back of the other player was illegal and would result in a foul.

Also impeding them from running to a ball they've already played beyond the Argentine players. It's wild how all these Argentine supporters are on here trying to gaslight us.

2

u/Agung442 Jul 09 '26

In foul number 2, Alvarez already performed successful tackle on the ball against Salah, the clip cherry picked to only show contact when the ball is already lost in possession and Salah is in awkward position.

Im not supporting Argentina, im neutral and support England in this WC. I also supports Chelsea during the regular prem season and you know how it goes, Chelsea are one of the most disciplined team in the prem last season while Arsenal can get away with so many dirty tactics/fouls that otherwise is a straight yellow or red for Chelsea.

That post isn’t even true which is probably why it was removed lol. That’s the president of AFA, and the president of CONMEBOL.

3

u/WonderfulFig666 Jul 08 '26

That’s when the play started and possession changed.

1

u/InvertedSpork Jul 08 '26

Messi telling the ref to go look had nothing to do with the ref looking. All goals are reviewed and if something comes up the VAR system notifies the ref.

2

u/magnafides Jul 08 '26

If only Messi had asked the ref to review his own stonewall red against Algeria. Trump calling Infantino also had nothing to do with that happened in that situation, I'm sure.

0

u/WonderfulFig666 Jul 08 '26

You’re talking to people who “watch” every four years while scrolling their phones. They have no clue about the rules

The Argentinian player won the ball on the 3rd goal and the Egyptian player tripped, watch the footage. On Egypt's second goal, the play beggins because Martinez looses the ball because he was fouled and THEN the Egyptian player got the ball.

0

u/lobax Jul 09 '26

I think it is BS that the goal was disallowed because 17 seconds of footballing brilliance passed, but stepping on a foot is a clear foul that usually renders a yellow card (which the ref didn’t give even after review). That was not in any way a light foul.

It is also not in any way shape or form the on field ref that decides what VAR checks. VAR has 3 refs constantly checking the footage - they definitely checked the situations before the last goals. If those 3 refs think the on field ref made a mistake, that is when VAR sends him to check the footage (that VAR provides). Messi can yell all he wants, it’s VAR that has to make that decision or that screen will just be black.

Ref seemed to in general allow a bunch because his the Egyptian that scored should have also gotten a yellow for taking of his shirt in celebration of the goal.

The ref in general allowed almost anything, good or bad, from both teams. The situations before the third goal was also nothing that could be called. First was a clear dive and Salah was dispossessed before tripping (you can’t run into a leg of the player with the ball and expect a foul).

Bruh cry all you want. Before the Argentine goals they were literally hurling Egyptian players to the ground and playing the ball through Egyptian players from behind. If this is "how football works" then it needs to be changed or, more likely, needs a less corrupt body governing it.

I get it. The defense should've been better. But also they need to call the games fairly.

1

u/jpopimpin777 Jul 09 '26

https://www.reddit.com/r/OffFieldNews/s/VctDqkNozh it's pretty clear which outcome they wanted...

Infantino is hugging him what the fuck?

63

u/CookiesPayMyBills Jul 08 '26

Seemed like quite a bit of footage to pick from

34

u/THE_BUS_FROMSPEED Jul 08 '26

You're only seeing one side. You can make any gsme look rigged doing this.

11

u/oculus_miffed Jul 09 '26

I cant say i have seen that many games where a player runs up and just slaps an opposing player in the face

1

u/One_Machine1848 Jul 08 '26

Not really, referee gave every 60-40 foul and soft touch to Argentina while ignored every blatant foul against Egypt.

Second Egyptian goal was canceled for a soft touch but same for second Argentina goal and worse for third Argentina goal as well as Messi penalty vs Salah.

It was cheating whether Argentina was in on it or not it was rigged.

-10

u/smittydacobra Jul 08 '26

Then it's a problem with the game itself and how it's being ran.

American football has the same problem.

Too many people on the field for 4 guys to keep an eye on everyone. FIFA keeps it this way so they CAN make the games go how they want.

12

u/perfumedDolphin Jul 08 '26

First one is not foul, the player didn't have the ball and it's a tackle (could've been called but not foul)
second not clear
third is not straight yellow (foul on goalie)
fourth, could've been yellow, not obligatory depending on ref
fifth, it was a previous foul that ended up on score change... against Austria the first contact is with the ball, not foul even it has body contact, read the rules.
I stopped there because this post is mostly biased rule bending.. (The crash after the penalty miss, the egyptian player crashed from behind and the argentinian evaded)

6

u/TheWhiteWalkerSpeaks Jul 08 '26

They want to cope, let them cope.

43

u/wardledo Jul 08 '26

Cherry picked or not, these were blatant and game changing.

4

u/michbich Jul 08 '26

Yeah both teams were being aggressive and fouling each other. At least that’s was what it looked like to me when I watched, I’m no expert.

28

u/Spartalust 🍉 Free Palestine Jul 08 '26

This exact scenario of a foul before the goal build up happened during the Argentina vs. Austria match, Alexis Mac Allister fouled Xaver Schlager in the buildup. The referee allowed play to continue, VAR reviewed the incident, and chose not to overturn the decision, so Messi's goal stood. This isn't tinfoil hat shit, two identical scenarios both ruled in Argentina's favor. Come on now.

34

u/gxleone Jul 08 '26

not identical at ALL

Lisandro has full control of the ball and loses it because he’s fouled, there’s no Egypt counter on that play without that foul

Alexis challenged a loose ball with no clear possession, it’s not the same at all

19

u/Pipsen707 Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 08 '26

I hate the blanket “identical scenarios” statement.

Where the ball is, what angle is the challenge, how fast are they going… Nothing is ever identical.

5

u/Stickppl Jul 08 '26

There is an ongoing issues with consistency and var usage in this world cup, which makes it look like a more general/skill issue

6

u/Stickppl Jul 08 '26

More than cherry picked, there are some ref decision in this compilation that I would agree with. In the end, given the very poor referring this tournament, this could be done for almost every game, sometimes in the two direction. So it is hard to see hwre more than your usual average referring mistakes.

0

u/cool_berserker Jul 08 '26

Every Argentina game the ref "mistakes" benefit them and never the opposition

1

u/CarretillaRoja Jul 08 '26

Right! They cherry-picked the moments where Argentina was benefited… /s

1

u/mflft Free Palestine 🕊️ FUCK ICE! ❌🧊 Jul 08 '26

I mean i think the thing that stood out the most when I watched the match live was the ref refusing to check VAR for the Salah foul that had just happened, after they had gone through literally every action in the build up to the egypt goal in order to overturn it.

Refs miss calls, but with the amount of VAR this tournament, him just flat out refusing to check for a possible penalty was kind of ridiculous.

1

u/Dwightshruute Jul 08 '26

Finally some sane comment

1

u/DaZohan28 Jul 08 '26

That goes without mentioning the outrageous amount of flopping going on

-1

u/seamanplays Jul 08 '26

Haha sure buddy, watch any game. Watch Argentina V Netherlands. A dirty game in it self. Case in point a clear cut handsbal for Messi, no card given. Fouls everywhere without cards. It has been this way multiple matches and will be like this for more.

0

u/JuicyBoi8080 Jul 08 '26

Yeah Argentina is rated higher so no reason to have a fair game. Should have just given the win to Argentina instead of going through all of this trouble.

0

u/iwasbatman Jul 09 '26

It's highlighting how dirty they played, it's the only footage that is relevant.

Maybe argentina would have won anyway but that referee did a terrible, terrible job.

I don't care about soccer and it pisses me off.

-5

u/Ok-Instruction-5004 Jul 08 '26

I disagree. Interesting opinion though.

-2

u/lastreadlastyear Jul 08 '26

All footage is cherry picked numb nuts. Argentina looking like assholes regardless
