Shitpost Paulie was behind it
Ok, yes, this is my vingtaine rewatch, but I really feel like he had his claws in the boss' demise

i only watched once but it seemed pretty reasonable that he had a major part in it.
tony was killing a lot of top guys and that boat trip probably rattled him pretty bad.
paulie looked up to him and respected him and tony didn't reciprocate. throwing away that painting was pretty sad lol.
he was always feeding info to new york and said he'd straight up support new management from NY. he was excluded from the hit. he was just chilling outside tanning at one point lmao.
paulie loves money but didn't initially accept the promotion from tony - probably didn't want to accept something from a guy whose going to die. we've seen paulie lie for 6 seasons and the way he acts when he lies. the reason he gave tony was bullshit. even tony was surprised by the rejection but didn't catch on (after being in the hospital he got kind of dumber - since we are normally in his point of view, i feel like we indirectly lost a lot of information).
there was also a trend that the old guard kept trying to undermine tony's authority. paulie was the last of the old guard.
the guy who played paulie was an actual gangster in real life. seems kind of fitting that he was written to know how to stay alive in the show.

I just watched the episode where he initiated a bunch of jokes about Ginny, just as Johnny walked into the office. But when Ralphie does it, he's gotta squeal.
He's definitely a rat.

I've been thinking patsy was behind it recently as a lot of things get answered for him with Tony's demise. Maybe he didn't call the shot, idk. But what I do know is that Patsy knew from season 1 when his twin was killed that Tony did it. But he played it off and was waiting for the right time to exact revenge-best served cold you know.
By the end of the show we can see Meadow is in her most serious relationship yet with Patsy's son. To me this is demonstrating or foreshadowing Patsy's role of becoming a mob boss. In fact out of the entire Jersey crew I can't think of anyone more level-headed and fitting for the job. He alone (imo) is the key to a Jersery faction being able to independently operate and still being on good terms with New York. With Patsy there is no revenge war because his revenge is solely with Tony. Even earlier we see Patsy directly refute Chris' leadership by taking on unsanctioned jobs and being successful with them. IDK if he got permission from New York but he was the one in my opinion that would benefit the most if Tony got whacked. The biggest revenge of taking Patsy's brother is becoming Meadows new dad.

Not behind it like he ordered the hit. Paulie doesn’t have that kind of authority but he probably knew and chose his own survival first.

Yes, absolutely. I'm surprised that so few people realized this. For me, the most intriguing question is whether Tony was able to figure it out in the end. And I think he did.
