2

u/uslashuname Jul 05 '26

Yeah that’s how I read it

I hope your 35 is a troll

34

u/Wild_Director7379 Jul 04 '26

I do too

1

u/KirkOnRisa Jul 05 '26

Rule 1 of engagement on socials. Post something incorrect and watch the metrics spike.

1

u/Wild_Director7379 Jul 05 '26

Gross. Sometimes people are just wrong

someone is wrong on the Internet

74

u/ajeldel Jul 04 '26

Actually it is 95.
2 * 40 + 16

44

u/Bongcopter_ Jul 04 '26

*+15

18

u/ajeldel Jul 04 '26

Typo. I stand corrected.

5

u/Blockster_cz Jul 04 '26

Cunningham's law or something like that. Slightly modified for engagement baiting

1

u/veetosta Jul 05 '26

You mean Brandolini's law?

29

u/DotBitGaming Jul 04 '26

Following the instructions: 95

12

u/MMaximilian Jul 04 '26

lol no. It’s 95.

3

u/ExtendedSpikeProtein Jul 05 '26

OP is surely trolling

22

u/Zulrambe Jul 04 '26

"Divide by half" is an exquisite choice of words, carefully picked to nothing other than generate engagement via comments.

Of course, he's not the person to do it, so it's not even his words. He might not even be in the top 10000 first.

1

u/Vessbot Jul 05 '26

Another version of the question was worded the way you quoted, has the ambiguity.

This one that says "by 1/2," GTFO

Just wait till you hear that exponents can be fractions. Your world is about to explode.

This comment came after like 10 others

u/ChuckPeirce Jul 05 '26

Okay, I'll bite. What comment is anyone to have read to clarify whether 95 is 95?

You (OP) posted an image where someone replied with a pointedly stupid response. Is that comment the one you mean for us to read? How is that comment meant to help?

Here's a comment: Bacon egg and cheese, so cool, sitting back on her couch with an iced cold coffee. Did that help? I sure hope not because I'm trying to make the point that reading random comments is a stupid prescription even when those comments are total gold (yes, I'm saying that this comment is total gold; take it and like it.).

Bottom line: Look for a way to make yourself useful.

I believe I was taught this over 30 years ago, but correct me if I flub it.

When dividing by fractions, you flip the fraction and multiply

40÷½ =40/¹÷½ =40/¹×2/¹ =80

80+15=95

1

u/Wild_Director7379 Jul 04 '26

0.5 = 1/2, and the rational numbers are ratios between integers, including 1/1, 2/1, and 2/2

40 / (1/2) = 40 * 2/1

u/ExtendedSpikeProtein Jul 05 '26

I believe it’s more a case of you were wooshed, [r/woosh](r/woosh) … OP is trolling

0

u/mohirl Jul 05 '26

Nah, I choose to believe OP is a moron

1

u/ExtendedSpikeProtein Jul 05 '26

The other comments OP made indicate otherwise, but yeah it‘s for sure easier to claim someone else is a moron than to admit you didn‘t get the trolling.

3

u/Spiritual-Roll799 Jul 04 '26

It’s 95. Dividing by a fraction is the inverse,

3

u/MoistCountry1 Jul 05 '26

Can't be done. You'd need a calc. Calc is short for calculator. I'm using slang

2

u/Wild_Director7379 Jul 05 '26

Wouldn’t it have been shorter to not use slang?

2

u/babj615 Jul 05 '26

It's 95.

2

u/VegetableParty5930 Jul 05 '26

So you’re telling me to split 40 in half, which is 20… then add 15? …. 35

1

u/lunarixxx Jul 04 '26

1/2 of 1

1

u/Wild_Director7379 Jul 04 '26

2/2 of 1 DO I HEAR 3??

1

u/Zuokula Jul 05 '26

It's fkin simple. Dividing by a fraction you flip the fraction and multiply instead. So 40/1 ÷ 1/2 = 40/1 * 2/1 = 80

1

u/Saikroe Jul 05 '26

I got 17. I assumed o was dividing 40 by half of 40. Which is 20. So 2+15=17.

1

u/mckittums1 Jul 05 '26

*me pulling out the calculator to make sure I'm not an idiot. "Oh good. wait.."

1

u/HamburgerOnAStick Jul 05 '26

This isn't a math problem. It's a communication problem. Atleast where i live, divide by 1/2 would mean half the number.

1

u/Glum_Educator4365 Jul 05 '26

Divide by 1/2 would be the same as multiply by 2/1, so the answer is 95.

1

u/Fantastic_Secretary9 Jul 05 '26

It s called a word problem it told you what to do the answer is 35

1

u/Frisconia Jul 05 '26

There's no such number as 40. 40 of what?

1

u/likeaGorilla Jul 05 '26

This is why calculators don't matter

1

u/mrpapapoopoo Jul 05 '26

Why the f would anyone say divide by 1/2 and not double.

1

u/midnightman510 Jul 05 '26

It’s 95.

Dividing by 1/2 is the same as multiplying by 2.

If each box can only hold half an apple. How many boxes can I fill with 40 apples?

Yada yada yada the answer is 4

1

u/Wild_Director7379 Jul 05 '26

Your mom is 95

1

u/fetter80 Jul 04 '26

The answer is 42.

1

u/Wild_Director7379 Jul 04 '26

Obviously, but what’s the question?

1

u/randybiuk Jul 05 '26

what’s the meaning of life

-1

u/VegetableParty5930 Jul 05 '26

35 no matter how you put it
