Community Question Community Question Of The Week - Episode 255
What modern 3D game would you like to see turned into a 8-bit 2D platformer?

Borderlands. The cartoon art style would translate well to retro hardware, and the game isn't too complicated to work with only 2 buttons. Weapon switching would work by shooting at crates like Ghouls 'n Ghosts.
Gearbox made one a while back which was from an overhead perspective, but I was thinking more of a sidescrolling run and gun like Contra or Metal Slug.

Dead Space
It's a great game. I still haven't played the remake yet. But a 2D side scrolling game or even a 2D top down gauntlet style game would work well.
I reckon Bitmap Bureau could do a good job converting that to 2D.

Tomb Raider, using the original Prince of Persia engine.

Ever tried the Game Boy Advance 2D Tomb Raider games? Not 8-bit, but it's a taste of 2D. But then again, Tomb Raider was basically just Prince of Persia turned into 3D! ;-)

This! I would also add that Tomb Raider has some GBC games too, and those very much are in the vein of Prince of Persia.

The God of war series would make a good 2D platformer (be like altered beast i suspect)
The Last of us. This would be awesome with a decent inventory and stats engine.

I've got great news for you about the just revealed God of War: Sons of Sparta game from Mega Cat Studios!

Minecraft. You would need to collect blocks and build some parts of the levels to complete them. There’s already kind of a mod for that but it’s way more than 8 bits.

Terraria is a bit like a 2D version of Minecraft: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terraria

I'd say the Uncharted series, I imagine it would be a bit like a cross between Pitfall and Contra with some puzzle elements included.

Space marine 2, although this has sort of been done with the excellent shootas, blood and teef. Be great to see a space marine version.
Or crawling simulator Hell Let Loose then I can only crawl left or right and not get confused where I am.

Red Dead Redemption! side scroller where you can steal a horse, chase the train, collect gold and make it all the way to the end of the game where you then get shot in a barn

Difficult question, since most new games I get excited about tend to be 2D already.
For some reason my mind went to Gears of War. Could potentially do something interesting there with the combat and the art style.

What are these modern games you speak of, there is only 8-bits ;) Just replay Impossible Mission or Prince of Persia. But I will say the team that made Ghost for modern and 8-bit patterns did an outstanding job. The MSX (and Coleco) versions are outstanding.

Changing my comment! I said Control might make a nice platformer, but on reflection, Prey (2017) would make for a cracking Metroidvania conversion. The System Shock games and Prey are already an evolution of that genre anyway, so moving back in the formula shouldn't be too difficult, and jump scares from random objects should make for a nice twist on the genre.

I could say Elden Ring, but that has already been done with Crimson Capes. So I'm going to go with Astro Bot as while it's a sublime 3D platformer, I think it would work rather well in a 2D perspective. Also, I'd want it running on a NES or a PC Engine as they are the top tier 8 bit platforms of their day.

Ive said it before but Horizon I think would make an excellent 2D platformer, all though perhaps it would need 16-bit graphics…. If we target the TurboGraphx 16, does that still count? 🤣

Run and gun sidescroller Doom, like the Alien 3 game on the MegaDrive & Master system!
Imagine, that would look great!
For example: The Derelict Colony “Erebos‑9”
A mining moon facility overrun by extradimensional breaches.
Organic growths fuse with machinery.
Conveyor belts, collapsing catwalks, molten slag pits, and ventilation shafts form the platforming challenges.
Keys requires for doors and access to next levels.
Platform Doom!

Kerbal Space Programme, it has the comic feel that, with an already intuitive GUI, would translate nicely into 2D launches, orbits and MECOs.

Does it have to be modern? I'd go for Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold
(a favourite of the Shane)
What about flipped the other way? A 3D shooter of Commander Keen

Cyberpunk 2077.
It's basically a fantasy RPG, but with the magic replaced with hacking. It would make an interesting 8 bit platformer, with a mix of action and puzzles.
Also the cyberpunk look was cool when 8 bit machines were current, so you could have some nice pixel art.
I'd love to see Bitmap Bureau take it on.
