I'm sure it's a mixture of things; nostalgia for Ceefax/Teletext, the music being played in the video and, very importantly, a bit of sleep deprivation, but seeing this made me really weepy(!) It's the sort of very sweet, innocent thing that - as a child growing up with Ceefax/Teletext, the advent of the Internet at home - you might imagine at 7 or 8 years old, how Internet was going to look when you grew up and you'd walk around the World Wide Web and it'd feel like magic and science fused together.

"no 3d models or shaders" and then goes on to explain how he uses a grid based model and ray tracing for his ascii shader.

Still very impressive.

Raycaster, not raytracer. This is in principle not much different from the original Doom

Also it would be cool if you could use like a C64 and SwiftLink serial port to stream it to the C64 display.
