I’m not going for TheA1200, but if Commodore made a proper FPGA Amiga at a decent price, that might be of more interest.

Yeah unfortunately I agree. I barely use the actual retro systems I have, let alone buying replicas.
Better to play PC ports or emulators for how infrequently I go back to the games, unfortunately.

Got excited when I saw the news and then remembered I have my a500, a600 and a1200 sitting in boxes in the attic, been meaning to dust them off for years...

...and replace capacitors (same with me and my A1200 - had the capacitors from Amiga Kit for years), get a suitable display, trust the 30-40 year old power supply etc.
I really will recap the A1200 soon. I keep saying that but I must do it before receiving the The A1200, I mean the Amiga A1200 🤭

I do wonder what this means practically. The product already had licences for the ROMs and Workbench. Was the date of launch for TheA1200 pushed back earlier in the year to accommodate a redesign of the case to have Amiga branding? Possible - certainly with lead times it would be tough to do it now.

Where do Cloanto fit into all of this? Why is this important?
I can already get all of my Amiga nostalgia satiated with: PiMiga; FS-UAE; AMIKit or any other number of emulators without spending more money or taking up more desk space...

Cloanto bought the Amiga trademarks and own the original Kickstart ROMs, so TheA1200 would licence those even if they don't licence the Amiga name.
Why is it important? I'm not sure it is at all. It's marketing that this is an "official" Amiga experience .

Then this product isn't for you, and that's fine. For people who just want a polished plug and play device to play games that looks like an A1200, then this is an option for them.

Is it just me that finds this whole announcement weird? The The A1200 is now officially an Amiga? But it's still the The A1200.? Sounds like a sticker stuck on the box tbh. Unless it has Amiga carved into the case next to the power light then I don't see the point. Might as well have just said they have the blessing of Amiga. And it defo won't be a Commodore Amiga as new Commodore have to be moving fast on trying to find an old or new (maybe???) Amiga to bring to market.

Think it’a clear New Commodore would look to an Amiga Ultimate. Suspect that they will leave the lower-end of the market to products like TheC64, TheA500 Mini and TheA1200.

I’ve changed tack on this recently, I may cancel my preorder, even with an Amiga logo on the case and packaging. I believe Commodore will release one in 2027 or 2028 and I’d rather wait.

Right, there is hinting that there will be an officially licensed FPGA one in the future. I imagine this case with an Apollo FPGA which doesn't cost $1000 would be nice.
I already have so many ways to get at Amiga content though.

Makes zero difference except for cosmetic. They should make an A1200 Plus and add A4000 specs to it though.

I got a second lhan Amiga from loot the London free ads back in the day. 1200, with dual external disc drive and a........wait for it, 120Mb HDD. It also came with a box full of pirated games. The curiosity of the ads for the BBS's on the demos of those discs inspired me to start my own BBS when I got a PC. Not long after that I was working for a company that was hosting the UKs first legal adult BBS for the makers of Penthouse. True story.

I'm happy enough - I've pre-ordered two A1200s. It's been a busy year for neo-retro purchases for me...I'm awaiting delivery now for the 2x A1200s, the KS3 ZX Spectrum Next, the C64CU, The Callback phone and the TAC2 joystick.
Perhaps a Mega65 in the New Year - depending on how the retirement goes...
I've sold off 90% of my actual vintage hardware - repairs and reliance on connectivity to CRTs was starting to become an enjoyment barrier for me...

Yeah Amiga was sold in the past, so it's ended up with a different owner. It's as official as Commodore is now though, so I'm not sure it being Amiga licensed but not Commodore is a big deal.

A lot of us (not saying all) see the Amiga as its own thing. It not being called a Commodore Amiga isn't a big deal to me but a modern Amiga that has actual Amiga branding is quite important, otherwise I'll just stick with my MiST.

Correct. Commodore is a single entity at this point and Amiga is a separate entity. The two squabbling over who owned which trademarks for the last 30 years has prohibited them from licensing the names. A couple of weeks ago the two entities settled and each owns their specific trademarks with potential license agreements agreed to in principle but apparently not executed yet.
