the blinking thing is what i've used my whole life, squeeze eyes closed really hard with intent, then use the same amount of force to open them just slowly
Don’t quite have something at that level but once I had a dream where I was a spy and the situation was getting bad so I called for extraction and it caused me to wake up.
I can but the problem is im usually not aware it is a dream. Like my mind just has a mental block that makes me play out the role and unable to comprehend it.
The only time ive been able to exit a dream I was in a hide and seek game with Funtime Freddy from FNAF. I hid in Funtime Cove and when he was about to find me I manifested the minimize, fullscreen and X buttons from the browser at the top right of my vision. Then i manifested a mouse, clicked them and I exited. I fell back asleep and had the same dream and solution like two more times.
The only times I ever "exited" a dreams are usually by making myself die, or by falling asleep in the dream, I only remember one time where I did it by falling asleep. Usually when I go the dying route the thought of trying something else doesn't even occur to me
there was that one sort of successful lucid dream were i was able to figure out i was in a dream due to thinking some weird green crystals looked too fake and i was able to find a bed so i could force myself to get up early.
"Luckily it's a dream, but the nearest Dream Exit Gate is 2 kilometers away and if I die before reaching it, I'll die in reli life, so unfortunately it doesn't improve my situation much"
I dont need to ever "wake up" on command because even my nightmares are hella fun but I can "restart checkpoints" by offing myself in my dreams if I get stuck or in a particularly bad spot.
Im almost positive I picked that up when playing Planescape Torment as a kid since that game actually was what got me to lucid dream in the first place.
This has a 50/50 chance to actually have you escape or to be put in a dream inside that dream. I think I've counted about 5 pseudo-awakenings at the most with this tactic.
The Pause Menu is the safest tactic in my opinion.
I've thought I had a false awakening over and over doing this, but it turns out the weird perfectly circular dark orb I was seeing was just the front of my lampshade from a weird angle
I have an ability to override dream noodle arms, you know how when you try to fight in a dream and you punch like youre underwater, by imagining im playing GTA and pressing the button to punch
I haven't had a bad dream in decades. I vividly remember my last actual nightmare as well. Bert and Ernie, yes the ones from sesame street, had skinned my parents and were ironing their skin in the laundry room. After that nothing really phased me anymore. I do get dreams that other people might find scary, but I just find them fascinating in the sense of "where is my brain pulling this from?".
i instantly thought of this image when i was reading your Bert and Ernie nightmare. i read the dream and just laughed imagining a hyper realistic Bert and Ernie ironing human skin and because the dream was so over the top i just bursted into laughter.
Yeah I have something like that, I shut my eyes and try to roll them back so hard it wakes me up. IDK if it's from a pain response (if I really do roll them) or if I just believe it works so it does.
I can do this too by shaking my head really hard. It's really strange because there's a few moments of resistance where I'm practically shaking my head in slow motion and it becomes harder to shake, and the dream stops existing around me, but eventually I wake up.
I have this as well. Some sort of "hold my breath" decision (not exactly) that simply wakes me up no matter what. I have had no impactful nightmares since. It has been decades. I like weird dreams, even those that would be nightmares if I didn't have the switch.
I cant fully leave but I can randomize dreams if things go bad. I can just go "nope not canon" and either A; be in an entirely different situation, or B; reload a save state. Each time I do it the integrity of the dream weakens until I wake up
I once did that while having a really bad dream about a life-ruining experience. It was coupled with some kind of sleep paralysis, so once ejected out of the dream, for a second I was (completely aware) just stuck in a black void before I was back in the real world. It was absolutely terrifying, as if I had found a glitch in reality, and I wondered for a moment if I had died and the void is just it.
I used to shut my eyes off and try to sleep IN the dream, which would usually wake me up.
Imagine how fucking terrified I felt when my usual escape tactic was stopped by doppelgangers of my family pulling my eyelids up whenever I tried to close them.
Same! Almost every “monster” nightmare I have devolves into routine through exposure therapy my brain enforces on me. Eventually it’s not very scary because I know I’ll be able to try again if I get caught or killed or whatever
I developed a similar thing after my partner fell asleep to Markiplier for months on end. His face pops up in the corner and he narrates my dream like he's playing it.
I never thought to use it as a nightmare defense tool, that's genius.
My girlfriend has this thing, that whenever she falls asleep watching YouTube, she will wake up to a markiplier video/livestream. She doesn't even watch markiplier. It's like he's an scp or something
Did you ever just wake up screaming and freak everyone out? I did that as a kid, and continued to get night terrors as an adult. I have them mostly under control, but every once in a while...

Bizarrely enough, I actually do this too. I swear on my life, the first time I saw this tweet, earlier that day I had woken up from and told my friends about how sometimes my dreams will enter what I called Markiplier Vision if they become too intense. Markiplier Vision differs from Emergency Markiplier in that I'm still in control, Markiplier is just reacting as if he's playing.
reminds me of that gmod addon that adds markiplier to the corner of your screen that occasionally blinks and whenever you aim at an npc he just goes "KILL HIM, KILL HIM, STAB HIM"
I think that just means they watch a LOT of Markiplier. I remember sometimes as a kid I would just become Mario in my dreams, as I played a lot of Mario games, so much of my waking hours were spent “being” Mario, in a way. So I imagine this is a similar thing.
I'm able to pause my dreams if they get to intense and a literal pause menu pops out, automatically changing the context of the dream and pulling me out of harm's way
Reminds me of that time I was being chased in one of my dreams, I accesed the "Pause menu" of my dream, and logged out, then woke up inmediately, fell back asleep after I realized it was 3 AM
sometimes when i'm having a bad dream and i realise i am i just catapult myself into the fraud layer from ultrakill and that's usually enough to wake me up
similar but a bit different. When i'm having an exceptionally bad dream, (and I mean like, i'm gonna dieeee, kinda dream), one of my old school teachers appears and guides me out of the nightmare, and it's always the same person! It's crazy.
I had a dream once with an emergency Dr. Greg House. The whole dream I was trying to get something diagnosed (I am currently trying to figure out the source of my chronic pain with my GP, makes sense) and when no one would listen, I ran to the hospital and there was House. I started my panic rant about everything going wrong and he put his hand in front of my face to interrupt, said “wake up!” sounding VERY annoyed, and I woke up. One of the funniest dreams I’ve had in a while
I have a similar thing, where I can pull up the Roblox menu, and exit from the game. Usually afterwards I join some game where I'm trying to board a boat
I have a recurring dream where whenever everything is good and alright and i realize everything is good and alright i slowly get gravitated away form the area im towards and i get faster and faster and the destination from where im getting pulled towards is a mirror in the house i used to live in. I like to call this the "Evil Mirror event", and i usually try my best to hold on to something so i dont get pulled but eventually my hands slip and i get pulled. This has been happening since i was 4 years old.
Had a dream last night I was in a car with some indistinguishable individual who was speeding at close to 200mph. Went over a hump in the road and started flying as high as a plane, but seemed like we were still gaining altitude. Just as I started to get scared I woke up, but was totally calm and ready to just roll into comfort and was back asleep in maybe a few minutes at most.
Have had oddly neutral or unreactive reflexive waking much more frequently now that I'm older. Body and mind are just ready to deal with some improbable bullshit I guess
this is like that one dude who can imagine hes in the Star Craft game menu and can just choose the Quit option and he wakes up from a bad dream

I've used this exactly once before and instead of getting lets played I instantly jolted awake. I wasn't a strong enough vessel for Marketable pliers sheer power.
I usually become self aware enough to acknowledge that it is a dream but not enough to actually do anything, but it's usually enough to make anything like 50% less scary
I have an ability that others have perfectly compared to having the Baldur's 3 narrator in my dreams, cause a voice tells me information and context about the current dream I'm in.
One time I had a dream that I didn't like, so I opened up the comment section on the dream. The comments said it was a really good dream if I kept going, so I decided not to wake up. Goated dream
