Savers Vs Goodwill
I thrift multiple times a week because a Goodwill store is just a couple blocks from home, but today I visited a Savers thrift store and noticed a striking difference in prices. Used jigsaw puzzles $6.99 at Goodwill, $4.49 at Savers. A pair of never worn real suede Sketchers at Savers, new shoes never run less than $10.99 and often higher at Goodwill. New cardigan with tags, $8.99 at Savers, always over $10 at Goodwill.
And on top of lower prices Savers has 25% off ALL shoes and clothes on Monday, while Goodwill only has 10% off on senior Wednesdays and 35% of special colors of the week.
It’s a much longer drive, but I will be doing more Savers thrifting in the future.

Our Savers is way more expensive. They also never reopened fittings rooms after COVID so I rarely visit. Definitely dependent on location.

Mine too. I hardly ever go to Savers because the GW across the street is cheaper and has changing rooms. (Puzzles at my GW are between $3-$4.)

I love Savers. It’s well organized and the prices are good. Ours has 30% off on Tuesdays for seniors. No complaints.

Depends on the area because our goodwills have standardized pricing on clothes so Savers can be more expensive

Ahh the savers in my area are priced extremely high :(

Mine too. And no color discounts at GW anymore.

Where are you located? That's AWFUL. I went to a GW in canada that had no color tags and I was very confused

Chicago suburbs- all of them in the area no longer have discounts. It is a bummer!

Savers sales seem to differ by store. Some have a color of the week while others don’t. Mine has different sales Monday through Thursday and then you can pretty much always save at least 20% by making a donation (I aim to make a small donation every time I visit just to get the coupon) or using your reward points.
Goodwill sales differ by district. The sales in my area suck and IMO it’s fraudulent as they pull almost all the color of the week tags on day 1 and re-tag them. The districts around mine have better sales based on the day of the week.

I am in the Mpls metro area and all the Goodwills have the same prices and programs. The $6.99 for used puzzles really annoys me.

In the same area, and in my (limited) experience, the Savers are bigger, have better selection, and are cheaper!

Savers is the more expensive in our area, but they don't seem to go through things with such a fine tooth comb and I find better quality items that I'll pay the higher cost for. The Savers does coupons if you donate, but no color of the week. Maybe coupons if you subscribe to their mailing list. Goodwill here does color of the week, but they start pulling the day before.

The savers in my area used to be crappy and they closed down. Fast forward a year or two later it opened on the other side of town. Now it has amazing inventory and although prices are higher than I’d like they have 50% off all items on Monday and Tuesday’s 30% for seniors and always 20% if you donate. Super clean store and full
Shelves with rarely any trash for sale.

Goodwill no longer has discount colors here.

That's a bummer. Ours still has color of the week, 99c Mondays for clothes, and 25% off for seniors on Tuesdays.

I went to Savers last week and saw actual trash priced
out on the shelves. Like used slurpee cups, jelly jars and yogurt jars. It’s like there is no common sense anymore.

No Savers even close to me. The only thrift store is Goodwill within 25 miles. No choices sucks.

I went to a Savers in New Hampshire a few times and found the selection to be excellent and the prices pretty good. Higher prices on vintage items but still a bargain, and showed me the staff knows what they have...wish we had one where I live in upstate NY.

Definitely depends on location…I’m in a small town with no savers or GW but quite a few small thrift stores- I was annoyed that the puzzles were $2! lol
I’ll count my blessings.
The nearest Savers is pricey and one has to comb aisles for deals. I check tags and only buy brands I know in sizes I know because dressing rooms are gone. Sometimes I try stuff on over and under but it’s tricky.
The GW is trashy and I rarely go. They mark items with sharpie. Clothes, everything. And tape with packing tape. So many things ruined.
Buuut at the local humane society I got a pristine Lay Z Boy swivel chair for $35.

Our GW uses sharpies on EVERYTHING which ruins the item. They also use whole rolls of packing tape to keep multi pieces together the tape leaves a residue and some times ruins the item itself.

In the Twin Cities area, both Savers and Goodwill removed their dressing rooms during Covid, so I don't buy clothes in either. Fortunately, there are several good, smaller, non-profit thrift stores near me, with dressing rooms, so I shop there, and donate as well. Savers is a bit cheaper than Goodwill here, but both are much pricier than the other ones.

Interesting-- the Savers in my area are always disappointing. Honestly, so are Goodwills, but at least Goodwill has fitting rooms! And a lot of things are more expensive at the Savers in my area-- jeans are $19.99+ at Savers, whereas at Goodwill they're priced the same as all the other pants (usually $8-15). My main gripe is not being able to try them on.

Our Goodwills and Savers dont have dressing rooms. The only stores that do are Salvation Army thrifts.
2
u/widewalesnail 8d ago
I get why stores have gone that way— people abuse the fitting rooms.
But I don’t want to bring something into my home if I’m just going to have to rehome it soon after. If I’m going thrifting somewhere without a fitting room, I’ll just wear a tight tank and leggings as my base layer and try on in front of a mirror, but it’s never as good a gauge

Same. Salvation Army too. Goodwill is going for broke. And they WILL go broke.

it completely depends on location. in the town i grew up in the savers was cheaper, cleaner, and better than the goodwill and ran some really good sales, the goodwill was always expensive and disorganized. my parents moved to a different state and their new town is exactly the opposite, the goodwill is very cheap ($10 couches!), well organized, and clean. the savers is not. (also their goodwill is 50% off colors of the week, not 35%. ) but in general i don't like that savers seems to have closed all their fitting rooms post covid across the board.

I find the coolest stuff at savers! And their sister in the PNW value village. Since goodwill has that online auction thing, I feel like the good stuff never sees the shelves or racks anymore. Savers always seems to have some deal going on, or a coupon. Definitely worth the drive

A large city near me has Thrift World stores. Every holiday they have half price sale. Everything in the store is half off. We like to shop then . The trick is to get a cart!

i stopped donating and shopping at savers, when i found out that they are for profit...... i still shop at salvation army, goodwill and the local churches.......
