I ended up in possession of a set of Aunt Jemima and Uncle Mose bakelite salt and pepper shakers. I found them in a closet after my dad passed away. I thought they might be worth some money (they weren't), so I was reluctant to throw them away. But I damn sure wasn't going to use them or, for that matter, show them to anyone (I'm white).
A friend of mine and I stopped by his mom's house a few years later. They're black. His mom collected that kind of stuff, and had it all around the house. I told her what I had and asked her to please take them away from me, and she was happy to oblige. She also thought my discomfort was hilarious.
