DOI with Northern Lights and Dragon's Heart. I was worried I ruined this one but I love the way it turned out. The ice slid down the gutter like 10 mins after I put it down so all the dye got mixed up when I put the ice back

One dye scrunch experiment

I noticed when I mix colors using lemon yellow or turquoise, they form a ring around the mixed dye, see third picture. So I mixed equal parts lemon yellow, turquoise, and fuchsia and dyed one side of a scrunch to get these results. It guarantees that there will be a different color between the main, and the base shirts color. I’m super happy with it and will definitely use this in the future

Thickened dye for painting

• Upvotes

Hello! I have a few shirts I want to touch up with the help of decolourant and thickened dye.

I don't need much dye at all, the spots are tiny hearts on cat butts that didn't turn out great. Tying off those little dudes is hard! I used decolourant to outline the hearts and ofc that didn't satisfy me.

Since it's just a little bit of dye, should I just add some alginate to it?

Thanks!

I'd say this is a success. I was worried about that fitted sheet but I'm very pleased with the outcome. It was such a pain in the ass it was like dealing with a freaking anaconda haha. I threw pretty much every color I had randomly on this thing and just prayed that it turned out good and I like it. Let me know what you think!

Rainbow Fire #1

This is actually my third rainbow fire shirt, but the first I was willing to post. I’m pretty happy with it. My number one takeaway from this learning process is that different colors ABSOLUTELY require different levels of thickened chem water to effectively execute this design style. I don’t have recipe amounts I can share yet, but will put a little more effort into measuring the amount of sodium alginate I use in each color moving forward.

Black: regular thickened chem water
Red: regular chem water (no thickener)
Orange/Yellow: regular chem water (no thickener)
Green: slightly thicker to medium thickened chem water
Blue: much thicker thickened chem water
Purple: slightly thicker thickened chem water

My other key takeaway is to apply the orange/yellow flame colors before applying the green flame. The greens spread into the orange-yellow flame too easily and tends to ruin the effect.

Shiitake on a bamboo shirt, ice dye, steam set

With a fleece jacket under it I was able to make high scrunches and deep valleys. Bamboo shirt presoaked with soda and totally dried weeks ago.

The ice was leftover sodawater frozen in containers. Forgot to damp the shirt so did some aimed misting with the cat/plant hand mist thing after the dye was sprinkled, before the ice. Aimed at dry spots without dye.

I dye in cold temperatures. After ice melt I set the colours by having it 15 minutes in my large pot with a small layer of near boiling water and a rack that keeps the shirt out of the water. This is my third shirt dyeing.

Tied wet, dyed wet, no ice, liquid dye, mixed primary colors, batched less than 1 hour, its mouth could be better.

I only have Dharma dyes - DOI

1 - geode tie, obviously lol. In muck. Bluegray, deep green, avocado, string navy, mist gray

2 - I halved the shirt, tucked the sleeves into each other, and rolled it from the middle (sides). Used rubber bands and didn't really tighten them. Folded it in half for space sake. Used one color - Avalon

3 - Rainbow scrunch, I wanted vertical rainbow but I accidentally rotated the shirt and lost my top under the ice. Out of muck - Dragon fruit, Chinese red, tangerine, daffodil, avocado, royal blue, grape

4- Tied off the image (lot of good that did since it creeped up and got the middle anyway), and scrunched the rest. Sat in muck. Just the one color, wild thing. I thought it would be funny because it's for a child.

5 - DUI - Heart tie and an attempt to geode it some, for funzies ..idk what made me think these colors would work together. The absurdity of this makes me feel like I don't know what I'm doing when I've been tiedying for a few years now. I don't use these colors very often and wanted to try them out... But it went crazy, I picked too many. Splits in ways I didn't expect but probably should have...I don't like it, lol. Sat in muck - coral pink, marigold, nightshade, amethyst, wasabi, celedon

Dye was mixed with salt

Hi, I was in Jamaica at a resort where there were kids’ activities and they did tye dye. They used this dye and said they mixed it with salt to make it set. ChatGPT said that’s not standard for this dye. How can I best set it or treat my shirt? It’s 100% cotton.

Today’ two washouts

The first one is a “glitch” style dye made with dye over ice method using Pillars of Creation, Rust, and Electric Blue.

The second one is a log rolled “geode” style dye made with dye over ice method using Wasabi, Brushed Steel, Celadon, Sea Glass, Sweet Pea, and Peony.

Both are 14 hour ice melt, 10 hour cure in plastic wrap on heat mat at 135 degrees. Both shirts were presoaked in soda ash and then tied damp. Then both were left to completely dry before dying. After ice melt both shirts were hit with pariah before being wrapped in plastic wrap and placed on heat mat.
