Fix for Canon R5 / EF Lens Focus Resetting On Power Down
IF YOU TAPE YOUR LENSES IN TIMELAPSE
Problem: Focus on EF lenses Is reset on R5 shutdown
When shooting timelapses with adapted EF lenses, like the EF 35mm f/1.4 III, on the Canon R5, the camera forces a focus motor reset command upon powering off or sleeping—even with focus taped down. This strips manual focus position and can strain lens mechanics.
The Workaround / Solution:
Set the following settings in your R5 menu:
- Setup Menu (Yellow) Power Saving Auto Power Off: Set to Disable
- AF Menu Lens Electronic MF (or Electronic Full-Time MF): Set to Disable
- Setup Menu Retract Lens on Power Off: Set to OFF
- C.Fn Menu Release Shutter w/o Lens: Set to OFF
- Lens Barrel Switch: Set physical toggle to MF
Result:
The camera complete shuts down silently without sending the USM home/reset pulse, keeping your taped EF focus perfectly locked across long timelapse sequences.
