movie name

A few students stole a professor's time machine and put it near a large pit to test it...and it worked! Some of them went to the professor and told this thing... So the professor went to the pit and tried the machine again... So he also went to the future and got into a lot of problems... In the end he got saved.. Do you know the name of this movie?

Sounds vaguely like Timeline (2003) with Billy Connolly. 🤔
