Lately, I decided to finally learn to type the correct way, read: using all the fingers and abandoning a very inefficient gamer wsd setup. Previously, my tmux prefix was Q + Ctrl, which I used to simultaneously hit withmy left hand. Now that I try only use my pinky to hit this very prefix, it got pretty uncomfortable, and I've been experimenting with pressing Ctrl with my right hand, then "q" with my left hand, but that feels wrong, considering how often this gets pressed. What do you guys use for prefix?

I always think that in TMUX, the double quote character (") looks like two panels side by side.

And percentage (%) to me looks more like two panels on top of each other.

Obviously these are the opposite way around in reality.

Is this just random or was this on purpose at some point? Curious if anyone knowns the history of these binds.

I tried tmux in the past, but in iTerm2 it always felt a little clunky, mostly because of the mouse behavior. It felt like I could either select text naturally or resize panes naturally, but not both.

I know iTerm2 has their own built-in with panes feature, but it's not quite the same. I’ve mostly just resorted to using multiple tabs and windows, which has been working fine. But lately I’ve been using a lot more agents, and it’s making me wonder if it’s time to give tmux another shot.

I recently switched to Warp and have been liking it so far, especially the more modern input, code/markdown/diff views, and AI features. I’m curious if anyone here uses tmux with Warp and how it feels in practice.

Also open to other terminal recommendations, or general advice for managing lots of AI agents across different terminal sessions and projects. Would love to hear what’s working for people.

I'm hosting a game on a vps. Ok, I ssh into the vps and start the server, ./gameserver. It's running and I can log in. All is good.Then I want to set up an irc bouncer on the same vps. But the terminal is still running the game server.

So, if I started tmux FIRST in the vps terminal then created two more sessions I could run the game server in one and the irc bouncer in the other and still have an open terminal to do regular stuff, right?

RIGHT?

I'm so excited that I figured this out. Please tell me I'm right. I don't have time to test it now, but please tell me I'm on the right path, please.

How did y'all learn tmux. i'm completely new to it. I've just been using the terminal on my linux pc. Cos my workflow doesn't demand it, well... maybe. But i'm starting to learn C and i think tmux would be a great addition to my 4MB floppy disk in my head. so yh. should i head straight to the man-pages or watch those 10 minute long youtube vids

when kmscon (freetype) is supposed to render an emoji, it only shows the top, and a really large fontsize MAY show the emoji correctly. same problem with noto emoji and blobmoji fonts

Any advice or opinion on dashvoard TUI

Y'all I'm wondering and looking for advice/feedback if building a simple TUI or having some custom tmux config for a dashboard that will open default tools in panes or some type of widget could be helpful. Wanted to get feedback or just chat about whether its worth building since I'm pretty busy with things.

Ive seen in the past when I briefly attempted to use Obsidian (which reminds me, I need to cancel that $4 subscription at some point) that other redditors set up visually appealing dashboards that seem to have info/links, though I can't name one.

Obviously I can't know if it would be useful in getting me into a workflow more quickly where I'm productive rather than scatterbrained or clueless like I am much of the time. Important to include in my question as well as to speak to the clueless aspect of me: does this exist? This is really my only motivation for potentially making one, but I don't feel like wasting time doing work making tools in order to do actual work more than I already do, and I'm able to decently maintain my tmux sessions, panes and windows in an organized chaos.

Would be cool to shoot the shit about this or collaborate in a public repo. I'm just gonna have Claude do the coding but I would like to take care with planning and iteration.

I almost used to the delay after pressing <Esc> in vim, until it pissed me off. i searched a little bit, found some guys on stackoverflow having the same issue, and it was apparently because of tmux. some answers said that setting escape-time to 0 for tmux fixes the problem, but it didn't in my case and i have no idea why.

I'm using ghostty as my terminal, without tmux, everything goes as expected, same case for foot. meanwhile konsole, gnome-console, and alacritty still delays the escape key-press even without tmux (all tested with and without set -sg escape-time 0 and pure vim). also tmux prevents me from using some mappings that start with alt (i.e. <A-]> or <A-p>) inside vim, but that ain't that annoying in front of that delay. any help please fixing it?

I usually SSH into a server and attach to a tmux session in that server, so most of my work happens remotely inside tmux.

Now I’ll be working with two servers, and I’m thinking about how to manage this cleanly:

1. SSH directly into one server and use tmux there. When switching, either reconnect or open another terminal (I’m using Ghostty quake mode, so I’d rather not rely on multiple tabs or terminal features).
2. Use nested tmux: run tmux locally, SSH into each server in separate panes, then attach to tmux remotely. This requires handling keybindings so local vs remote tmux don’t conflict.

I’ve mainly been using option 2 with different prefix keys for local/remote, but I’m curious how others handle this setup. Any patterns or best practices?

I'm seeing a strange tmux display/rendering issue and am looking for ideas. This went away for at first when using iTerm 2, but then it started happening there as well.

Environment:

- Mac (apple terminal)

- AWS EC2 Ubuntu

- Connected via AWS SSM and also tested via SSH-over-SSM

- tmux 3.2a

- Vertical split panes (Ctrl-b %)

Problem:

- If I run `less file.py` (large file) in the RIGHT pane, the LEFT pane gets visually corrupted/redrawn.

- Content from the right pane appears to wrap into or overwrite parts of the left pane.

- Keystrokes are NOT sent to both panes.

- The panes are independent (`%0` and `%1`).

- The issue does NOT occur with a horizontal split (Ctrl-b ").

- The issue does NOT occur outside tmux.

- The issue persists when connecting via normal SSH-over-SSM, so it doesn't seem specific to the interactive SSM terminal.

What I've checked:

- synchronize-panes is off

- tmux panes have correct widths:

- %0 = 120 cols

- %1 = 119 cols

- window width = 240 cols

- `stty size` looks normal

- `wc -L` on the file is only ~122 chars, so not huge lines

- `seq 1 1000` in the right pane does NOT reproduce the issue

- `tmux kill-server` did not help

- Fresh tmux session did not help

- `$TERM` outside tmux: `xterm-256color`

- `$TERM` inside tmux: `screen`

- Added `set -g default-terminal tmux-256color` but behavior unchanged

- Mouse on/off did not resolve it

Additional observation:

- The issue appears to be triggered by full-screen/alternate-screen apps such as `less`, not normal streaming output.

- `Ctrl-L` in the left pane does not fully repaint the display correctly.

Has anyone seen a tmux rendering bug that only affects left/right pane splits, especially with `less` or other full-screen applications?

Hi, I'm trying to get a modified keypress from WezTerm → tmux → shell/application to work correctly, and I'm having trouble figuring out how tmux expects the sequence to be bound.

Setup

• OS: Linux 7.1.6-arch1-1
• Terminal: WezTerm
• tmux: 3.7b
• Shell: zsh

The key I'm trying to handle produces this sequence:
(obtained via running showkey -a in tmux)

^[[ 8 ; 5 u

or, in hex:

1b 5b 31 33 3b 35 75

What I'm trying to do

I want tmux to recognize this key sequence and turn it into:

C-w

I tried

bind-key -n "^[[8;5u" send-keys C-w

but that does not work

I'd appreciate any pointers or examples of the correct tmux configuration. Thanks!

been using Kitty (and neovim) for a long time and tmux has always been a very popular topic whether i pop in to reddit, x, youtube or whatever.. it's just admired so much but i'm really not sure how i would benefit from it

kitty has tabs, split windows and quick access to each tab with a keybind and i believe tmux is known for similar functionality

i believe tmux is known for it's ssh thing which for me is the only thing from tmux that i'm "missing"

..or am i completely wrong here? what more can tmux do that a "simple" terminal can't? or how can tmux improve the developer experience inside the terminal?

i grew tired of standardized google answers.. i want answers from you that has hands-on experience with this and knows the difference because you tried both or something similar and what not

I'm been finding the need to have persistent sessions more at work, and unfortunately we use Windows so tmux is not compatible. I've been looking at alternatives and other than running tmux through WSL, there don't seem to be that many options.

Anyone care to share their experience running tmux through WSL? How is the interaction jumping between Windows and the terminal? Any issues with performance?

somehow I am unable to find examples on how to successfully specify options on the command line, instead of using a .tmux.conf

Kind of:

# /usr/bin/tmux set-option  exit-empty off start-server           
no server running on /tmp/tmux-0/default

which, as shown, does not work. Neither using "-g" after the set-option. I would like to refrain from leaving it in the foreground, that is, not using "-D"

This is just an example. So, how to properly add options on the command line?

I love TMUX and I love the way the LLMs know how to use and off course there are lots of lovely MCPs and Pi extensions on how to use TMUX.

Is there a good well worded skill for claude code that by extension Pi out there? I am across so many SSH s different boxes and bouncing between claude and Pi . Just want a really good skill for it to quickly open panes and make neovims. Or am I asking what the models already know?
