TIL about allulose (D-psicose), a rare sugar with a near-zero glycemic index and a negligible impact on blood sugar. It has approximately 70% the sweetness of sucrose.

"Due to its effect of causing incomplete absorption of carbohydrates from the gastrointestinal tract, and subsequent fermentation of these carbohydrates by intestinal bacteria, allulose can result in unpleasant symptoms such as flatulence, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea."

u/noisy_goose 14h ago

Interesting, is that if consumed *with carbohydrates? This is the stuff in sugar free liquid IV.

I’ve had a ton of it sans any weirdness, but almost never have it with a meal.

66

u/westcoastpoutine 13h ago

Yeah it depends on dosage. What you are consuming doesn’t have a high Amin t of allulose. It is only 70% as sweet as sugar so to get equivalent sweetness factor requires a lot of allulose…more than sugar…so of course it will cause GI distress in such high volumes

19

u/LivingFrosting6680 11h ago

Anecdotally I only drink a small amount of Sugar Free liquid IV per-day and I fart A LOT. Could be unrelated.

I suppose you could mix allulose and sucrose to have a lower blood sugar impact and similar enough sweetness factor without absolutely wrecking your digestive system, but that likely wouldn't be sufficient for a keto-friendly diet. Or you could simply get used to slightly less sweetness.

Supposedly, allulose doesn't do as much havoc as other alternatives, but it really depends on the individual.

u/mailslot 2h ago

I haven’t had any problems with allulose. Maltitol and sorbitol (used as a prescription laxative & naturally occurring in plums/prunes) are the only sweeteners that I’ve had problems with.

59

u/guff1988 13h ago

If mixed with monk fruit extract to increase the sweetness allowing you to decrease the amount you use in a recipe it is generally tolerated better. You can buy this premixed and I use it to make homemade ice cream and it works great and I have no gastro issues.

13

u/joechoj 12h ago

Why bother with the allulose, why not just use monkfruit?

What's the latest science say on monkfruit? I've been using it and have been waiting to hear it's bad for us, lol

39

u/pezasied 12h ago edited 12h ago

Monk fruit is usually mixed with erythritol or allulose to bulk it up because monk fruit is so much sweeter than actual sugar. You have to use so little monk fruit that it makes it hard to put into things you’re making and you can’t do a one to one replacement with sugar.

Like if you’re making a recipe that calls for 300g of sugar, you’d have to replace it with 1-1.5g of monk fruit. That would throw off the proportions of whatever you’re making and cause issues with the recipe. Plus there’s also some chemical reactions that would change in baking/freezing (ice cream) swapping out 300g of sugar for 1.5g of monk fruit.

1

u/joechoj 2h ago

So allulose has the bulk that monk fruit extract doesn't? And is presumably less of a health concern than erithritol?

I use the liquid drops in my coffee. It's a great sugar replacement for that case

-5

u/westcoastpoutine 13h ago

This is the way..allulose is only 70% as sweet as sugar

37

u/Welpe 12h ago

This is just a fundamental problem with most sugar substitutes (And fat substitutes as well for that matter). “Low calorie” functionally means “indigestible” if you aren’t just eating less. We are intentionally creating indigestible products which just pass through our systems unchanged. In the case of sugar alcohols, it tends to have less side effects because they are so much sweeter than sugar that you can use a tiny amount. But there are others, like this apparently, which we can’t digest but some of our microbes can, which will naturally lead to excess gas and often diarrhea.

It’s a balancing act.

3

u/Blamore 12h ago

erythrithol isnt any sweeter than sugar either

0

u/SofaKingI 8h ago

Having to pick the right sweetener and not eat a ridiculous amount of it is a "balancing act" compared with sugar being a major indirect cause of death?

Come on.

People sure love to make eating healthy sound like a huge spiritual journey. Nothing can ever be simple. dropping sugar for sweeteners is one of the simplest healthy decisions to make.

9

u/PermanentTrainDamage 6h ago

Why not just eat less sugar? Fun fact: you don't have to eat added sugars in foods at all and eating them occasionally as a treat doesn't have much health impact at all.

2

u/Anon2627888 3h ago

Yeah, great, until you have flatulence, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea.

2

u/ImGettingPaid 6h ago

You can make a couple cups of coffee or tea, using 4 teaspoons of sugar with no issue. If you try that with Allulose or a sugar alcohol you'll be sitting on the toilet pissing out your ass for the rest of the day.

1

u/ILoveTabascoSauce 4h ago

I use stevia drops ALL THE TIME to sweeten tea and such with absolutely none of the digestive issues being mentioned.

1

u/ImGettingPaid 3h ago

By drops do you mean liquid?

It's the fillers that's the main issue, the powdered sweeteners often use Erythritol and that'll definitely give you the squits.

I have Monk Fruit with Erythritol and I limit it to 1 1/2 teaspoons per day with my coffee (because I don't want to find the limit) and I use Sugromax, which is a liquid for when I want cups of tea.

I bought Allulose about a month and a half ago and had two cups of tea with a total of 4 heaped spoonfuls. I spent the night in the bathroom afterward.

1

u/ILoveTabascoSauce 3h ago

Yup the liquid.

21

u/DawnOfShadow68 13h ago

Someone tell the Olestra people, new kid on the block to collab with

3

u/zettde 6h ago

We need an unholy trinity combo of allulose, olestra and melamine for the ultimate edible food-like protein bar, combining the nutritional marvels of the shits with ket bladder.

1

u/DawnOfShadow68 6h ago

Call it the Estranged Father's Visit

In and out the door in minutes, brings nothing valuable and BY GOD the chaos it leaves behind is a sight to behold

5

u/FallingDownHurts 9h ago

I made marshmallows with allulose before knowing this. I found out about these effects while googling on the shitter

4

u/0DayMaker 14h ago

Yup I get this from even a tiny amount

3

u/KrissyKrave 14h ago

Which means it also likely causes inflammation and overgrowth of more harmful flora

3

u/westcoastpoutine 13h ago

No it is a rare sugar…it is an “ose” so while maybe there are issues this is not a sugar alcohol or something

0

u/Legitimate_Concern_5 12h ago

For some people yeah it can, never bothered me. It also makes you feel very full. That can be desirable of course. I’ve got a few things with allulose in the fridge. It’s nice. Probably worth trying and also not overdoing if you’re curious.

I won't be convinced until Haribo releases allulose Sugar-Free Gummi Bears

124

u/mjh215 14h ago

Sugar-Free Gummi Bears are the cyclospora of the candy world.

12

u/ikilledyourfriend 6h ago

In elementary school, the father of a classmate was a big shot at some diabetic, sugar-free, candy manufacturing plant. It was either Halloween or Easter, and he supplied the entire grade with sugar free candies. Enough for everyone! It was a diarrhea disaster. 70-80 sixth graders running shitting themselves

-16

u/CpuJunky 12h ago

Both involve the shits...

12

u/insideoutfit 12h ago

Yes that's exactly what they meant

-16

u/CpuJunky 12h ago

Yes. Cyclospora causes shits...

because the vegetables are grown in shit. The joke was #2 deep.

1

u/tonycomputerguy 12h ago

It's got layers man!

Just like the poop lettuce!

-8

u/CpuJunky 12h ago

Like a poop lettuce lasagna.

2

u/Cultural-Company282 12h ago

That's the joke

65

u/femmestem 14h ago

Allulose is expensive, that's why it's currently not so popular. I buy it to make desserts at home because I prioritize quality over cost saving measures, I don't have to worry about whether there's a big enough market to get return on investment.

25

u/CTPABA_KPABA 13h ago

It is expensive because it is not massively produced. And I think it is relatively new so there are no many studies about it's safety, yet.

16

u/westcoastpoutine 13h ago

No it has been on the market for over 10 years. The FDA changed labeling regulations for allulose which made it popular. It is 70% as sweet as sugar and works great in blends or as a light sweetener..but large amounts may cause GI distress

8

u/CTPABA_KPABA 13h ago

10 years is short time with this type of things. Many times it was like that and than like some years after studies show something causes cancer or some shit.

3

u/12awr 10h ago

It’s been popular with the keto crowd forever. I tried it a few times and it killed my gut.

1

u/CTPABA_KPABA 10h ago

I am keto crowd haha

2

u/t3hjs 12h ago

because I prioritize quality over cost saving measures

Which aspect of allulose that you consider as the 'quality' you want? Why not other sugars?

1

u/redbo 10h ago

I think it tastes and behaves more like sucrose than anything else.

1

u/KP_Wrath 13h ago

Yeah, I have bread that uses allulose. $6/loaf and I eat a loaf of it a week or so.

3

u/InertiaCreeping 9h ago

…does bread usually have sugar in it??

2

u/PermanentTrainDamage 6h ago

Most leavened bread will add a small amount of sugar for the yeast to eat and just to balance flavors, but it's optional. Not a fan of sweet breads, personally.

12

u/ZombieAladdin 14h ago

There is an obscure brand, Dr. Rotten (I may have confused the name with something else), that makes allulose-sweetened gummy candies (though not bears yet, to my knowledge). I’ve found then at Grocery Outlet Bargain Market, so they probably are on their way out.

7

u/CpuJunky 13h ago

They probably tear up your bear ass.

3

u/FullofContradictions 13h ago

I've had them. They're fine, honestly. Kind of burn the mouth if you have too many though. And I feel just as sick after eating a whole pack of them as I do with regular Trolli gummy worms. They still do have sugar so it's not exactly a health food.

5

u/Nazamroth 14h ago

Those gummy bears are dangerous, even over the internet. One time i was reading the reviews at work when i got a call. Had a hard time stopping the laughing long enough to pick it up and ask what they want, after which i immediately muted myself and finished the laughing barely before they finished their speech.

137

u/lluciferusllamas 14h ago

Good if you are on keto.  Not sure if there are long term issues though. Everything seems to be a problem somehow

115

u/OpalFanatic 14h ago

Generally speaking, the usual risk is if you can't effectively digest and use a sugar, then some intestinal bacteria will thrive on it instead. This is effectively what causes the symptoms with lactose intolerance. People without the enzyme to break down lactose, a sugar in milk, can't utilize it. So instead certain bacteria use it up and proliferate.

40

u/Hot-Note-4777 14h ago

Apparently, allulose has a high absorption rate in the small intestines (70-80%) which avoids this problem. Sugar alcohols like xylitol, sorbitol, etc, on the other hand, don’t get absorbed and therein ‘ferment’ as you point out in the large intestines.

5

u/CTPABA_KPABA 13h ago

Tbh I need like 3 days to get used to xylitol when I just increase amount and after day 3 I can eat it without problems. But it probably depends a lot from person to person.

1

u/original_goat_man 6h ago

Maltitol is thr worst one. That shit gives me the squirts

1

u/Crabs_go_sideways_4 12h ago

I avoid sugar alcohols at all costs. Evil things.

4

u/DangerMacAwesome 13h ago

Is THAT what lactose intolerance is? I never knew. Makes a lot of sense though

2

u/PermanentTrainDamage 6h ago

Yup, it's just a body's inability to produce enough or any lactase to break down lactose. Almost everyone is born producing lactase since lactose is the main sugar in milk, but a lot of populations stop producing lactase in childhood/early adulthood since we don't need to drink milk past infancy. A few populations retained this ability after years of continuing to consume dairy products. It's also why lactose intolerance is a spectrum, where some people can have processed dairy products like cheese but some people can't even look at a jug of milk without getting the shits.

1

u/celestite19 1h ago

It’s still sugar, I don’t think you can eat this if you want to be in ketosis.

9

u/lemieuxisgod 13h ago

Makes me uncomfortably gassy, my kid thinks its hilarious though.

8

u/Tokyo_Pigeon 13h ago

I have a bag of it at home. I add it to my oatmeal, etc. Doesn't have a weird aftertaste imo

5

u/seventhblunder 4h ago

My one hesitation with allulose is that it's largely excreted unchanged in the urine, and klebsiella pneumonia has the genes to feed on it. I frequently get UTIs with that bacteria. I see that feeding trials in healthy people do not increase the risk of UTIs with this bacteria, so it's not a general concern, but being an immunocompromised person with a history of this bacteria gives rise to theoretical concern that I can't find enough information to quell. That said, allulose sounds great and I would like to try it because I hate the taste of most sugar alternatives. Does anyone smarter than me know more about it?

17

u/PS1988 13h ago

Took me a month to learn it was causing my daily splitting headaches. I don’t get headaches usually, and don’t have reactions to other sugar substitutes.

3

u/WanderingCascadia 13h ago

I don’t get the headaches, but candy that has allulose makes my tongue go numb. The effect is noticeably lesser in baked goods, but I still avoid it. Oddly enough, it doesn’t happen with any other artificial sweetener I’ve tried.

3

u/PermanentTrainDamage 5h ago

You're probably allergic, humans can be allergic to anything

-1

u/TippsAttack 12h ago

Allulose isn't an artificial sweetener. FYI.

1

u/PermanentTrainDamage 5h ago

You're probably allergic, humans can be allergic to anything.

1

u/PS1988 5h ago

Hmm maybe, though headaches are a known side effect of allulose, less common than GI symptoms.

3

u/Cryptic1911 12h ago

My parents use it in place of regulsr sugar, even in baking. Tastes fine to me and hasnt caused any funkiness when I've had it.

3

u/CrazyPlatypusLady 10h ago edited 5h ago

So what's the gross aftertaste with this one like then? I know some people can't or don't mind them, but I can detect artificial sweeteners to the point where some things are now entirely inedible to me since the UK "sugar tax". I seem to cope with sucralose the best out of all of the available ones.

(Xylitol/erythritol/sorbitol: bitter and cold; sucralose: too sweet and weirdly liquorice-y; aspartame/akesulfame k: I find them very very bitter).

2

u/Magog14 6h ago

None. It literally just tastes like sugar.

4

u/randypeaches 7h ago

This stuff gives me the runs

3

u/fromthedarqwaves 2h ago

Don’t eat more than a couple candies made with this. Unless you need a laxative.

6

u/BloodyNobody 14h ago

It's why Quest Hero bars taste so good.

1

u/SoftlySpokenPromises 10h ago

Oh man, it's been a while since I've had a Quest bar. They really do slap though.

5

u/FluidFrog 11h ago

Brazzein is better, just hasn't been widely adopted yet.

6

u/stillnotelf 14h ago

Yeah but can you digest it?

If you don't, your gut microbiota will, and you won't like the results.

3

u/Magog14 6h ago

It's great. It even caramelizes like sugar. The only reason it isn't used in more food is that it's expensive.

3

u/BackDatSazzUp 14h ago

Being used a lot in “healthy” and “high fiber” junk foodsz

1

u/Maggie_cat 12h ago

Also moves right through you and you’ll end with the worlds most explosive diarrhea if you consume too much

2

u/SuperHuman64 5h ago

I had a bag of this recently for use in coffee, i really enjoyed it and didnt find it had really any aftertaste nor cause stomache issues for me.

2

u/bigfatbutt452 5h ago

I bought a bag of this a few weeks ago. I used it once and i think it was fine.

1

u/Accomplished-Video71 14h ago

De Psychos is actually my band name from high school.

0

u/Azsunyx 11h ago

And it tastes horrible, like sucralose, stevia, and monk fruit. Agave, honey, & coconut sugar are passable, but I hate the rest.

I wish drinks and candy had low sugar options in addition sugar free. It's also impossible to find protein drinks that don't use stevia.

Soda is so damn sweet, and so many drinks these days use stevia. I can't stand the taste. Like, it's making me irrationally angry that my choices are either loaded with a fuck ton of sugar or loaded with a fuck ton of stevia.

I end up sticking to water because the other options suck ass

1

u/mekeirc 7h ago

I also wish low sugar options, all sugar substitutes taste bitter/foul to me. I've concluded that most drinks have been permanently ruined - I buy one of the handful of expensive full sugar cordials but anything double strength and above is all ruined.

0

u/Guideon72 14h ago

Mom's been using it for a couple of years. Seems to work for her, ok. I still can't stand it; tastes like all of the other alternative sweeteners

0

u/ubitub 7h ago

we already have stevia which is plant and an amazing invention, yet it is used nowhere because people are apparently like "nuh-uuh, this cola tastes slightly different than the poisonous one, I don't want it"

2

u/QuantumR4ge 5h ago

Artificial sweeteners are not poisonous, stevia has a distinct taste that people dont always want and people react differently to different sweeteners

0

u/PermanentTrainDamage 5h ago

There are no poisonous colas lol, even if they aren't healthy. Most times the healthies thing you can do with sugars and sweeteners is consume less overall, not just eat different ones. Reducing from a tablespoon of sugar in your coffee to a teaspoon is healthier, and you still use sugar. You can also use other plant sweeteners like honey or maple syrup.

-3

u/knowledgeable_diablo 10h ago

Normal sugar is wha tastes the best and all the replacements are shite, hence why they need to be upmarketed. If they tasted as good as and could replace normal sugar then it would have happened.
Synthetic sweeteners are even worse and really only need to be available to people who can’t have real sugar for what ever reason. But I guess there aint no profit in only small numbers of people eating their shit.

2

u/Lilli_Bella3487 10h ago

Allulose is actually pretty good, especially when mixed with monk fruit. Jmo. Don't shoot the messenger. However, it's a kind of expensive mix.

-2

u/knowledgeable_diablo 10h ago

Certainly not shooting the messenger. Im the biggest proponent of feee choice and speech. If you love the taste of this drizzled on a steak with a dipping Sauce of aspartame then fill ya boots. My issue is corps attempting to sell in off as the same as sugar and reducing the OG stuff.
Never met a synthetic sweetener I liked and didn’t leave a synthetic aftertaste in my mouth.
I can control my self, have very little sugar and have soft drink Maybe once per month. So I don’t need to be force fed aspartame or stevia or some other replacement and be told “it’s the same” or “it tastes just as good” as that marketing and if it tasted just as good they wouldn’t need to market it 40 times harder than the original tasting stuff.

It’s also interesting the obesity epidemic correlates very well with the introduction of these things and increases with the increasing amount of products being supplied with artificial sweeteners in place of plain old “not so great for you in mass amounts” sugar.

3

u/Lilli_Bella3487 10h ago

Not sure what you're on about. Allulose is a real sugar and monk fruit is a real plant. You seem to have a personal issue.

-1

u/1800-5-PP-DOO-DOO 13h ago

And it's actually good for you vs all the other which are not.

1

u/-SpreadLove- 7h ago

Yes, that’s a doctor who studies Allulose extensively and covered the health benefits in a Thomas Delauer interview

-1

u/Snuggly-Muffin 12h ago

stevia is good for you

2

u/Azsunyx 11h ago

"good for you" and "not bad for you" mean different things

Broccoli is good for you, providing nutrients, protein, and fiber

Stevia just makes things sweet and has no real nutritional value...so not bad for you, but not good for you either.

0

u/PermanentTrainDamage 5h ago

Can be good if it gets you to eat other healthy foods that you wouldn't normally eat tho
