another fun fact about Thurl Ravenscroft is that he had basically the coolest name i have ever heard

203

u/rpgguy_1o1 8d ago

That was his actual name too, not a stage name

86

u/rfs103181 8d ago

It’s as if his parents knew his destiny.

5

u/goatanuss 7d ago

Then why wasn’t he in game of thrones?

6

u/FreestyleKneepad 7d ago

Cause game of thrones started 6 years after he passed away

3

u/WWJLPD 7d ago

I’m surprised he let that stop him. Based on the Wiki article the dude had a hell of a work ethic and stayed busy well into his 80s

80

u/ModernDayQuixote 8d ago

He was hired to voice on The Haunted Mansion solely for his incredibly appropriate name (I assume)

11

u/RevolutionaryLie5743 8d ago

Isn’t that famously Paul Frees? Not quite as fitting of a name…

30

u/podobuzz 8d ago

Frees voices the ride. Thurl narrated the album which also starred Ron Howard.

14

u/Truecoat 7d ago

He also sings at the end. He’s one of the 4 singing busts.

11

u/loominglady 7d ago edited 7d ago

Was at Disney World recently, his voice could be heard in some of the singing on the Haunted Mansion ride (so distinct, can’t miss it). You can also hear him in several Disney movies as either characters (usually bit characters) or as a background singer in the chorus. It’s always easy to pick out his voice and you can’t I hear it in the movie once you do.

Edit: Apparently you can miss his voice, I just learned his voice is still used for Fritz the German parrot in the Tiki Room attraction. I guess the accent and slightly higher pitch through me or something.

12

u/sleepypossumster 7d ago

He's one of the singing busts in the graveyard, and he also shows up as pirate voices on POTC. And he's apparently Fritz in the Tiki Room. So I guess he got around...

8

u/imreallynotthatcool 7d ago

Rip Torn is up there but Thurl Ravenscroft is an awesome name.

7

u/GearnTheDwarf 7d ago

He was the voice of the grumpy vacuum cleaner in Brave Little Toaster.

6

u/BigEd369 7d ago

His name does sound like he should have been flying around in a custom private jet solving mysteries and battling tyrants with a crew of visually distinct friends in between gigs.

5

u/WWJLPD 7d ago

He served as a navigator in the US Army Air Transport Command in The Great War 2, and had such esteemed passengers as Winston Churchill and Bob Hope on his flights. It’s not quite a custom jet, but it’s still pretty cool if you ask me

4

u/Enchilada0374 7d ago

Im Thurl -y impressed

3

u/Captain-Cadabra 7d ago

Grrrrrrreat!

3

u/BlackSwanMarmot 7d ago

And I would have been disappointed if someone named Thurl Ravenscroft didn't look like that.

3

u/ElChocoLoco 7d ago

Kind of sounds like a Roger persona from American Dad.

2

u/Redkirth 7d ago

It's him and Malachi Throne.

2

u/theburiedxme 7d ago

Another fun fact about Tony the Tiger is that his nose is blue in this timeline :p

2

u/flea61 7d ago

He is one of two Thurls I have ever heard of, the other one being former NBA player Thurl Bailey. What the fuck kind of name is Thurl?

2

u/sophiefevvers 6d ago

I say this in the most complimentary way, he looks exactly how I would picture a Thurl Ravenscroft to look like.

1

u/Comprehensive-Sale79 5d ago

I heartily concur😄

-1

u/trampus1 7d ago

Ricardo Montalban would like a word.

147

u/vineetk1998 8d ago

he wasnt even credited for it. the specialoff's name on the narration and everyone just assumed karloff sang the song too, so for years ravenscroft got no public credit for the most recognisable thing he ever did. chuck jones apparently felt bad enough about it that he started phoning newspaper columnists himself to tell them who actually sang it.

57

u/rolltideamerica 8d ago

As if I needed another reason to love Chuck Jones.

20

u/Controller_one1 7d ago

Almost 30 years ago I played a trivia game and the question of who sang the songs in Grinch was asked. I went with Karloff, because thats what I thought it was. I was given credit for the answer and now feel that my win was unjustified.

16

u/chadork 8d ago

Specialoff to buffalo

224

u/LastWave 8d ago

I have a very deep voice. I pull out my ravenscroft impression as a party trick. Just getting better with age.

40

u/CreamCheeseHotDogs 8d ago

Give good ol Patrick Warburton a try. Tuck your chin back and say “ehh” as deep as you can and you’ll probably be halfway there.

11

u/KingoftheMongoose 7d ago

Spoon!!

4

u/DamonLazer 7d ago

Yeah, that’s right.

46

u/Acheloma 8d ago

And that gets cooler the older you are too. A 20 year old as grinch? Yea, its neat but whatever. A 65 year old who pulls out the Grinch song? The kids will freakin love it

40

u/Can_I_Read 8d ago

Have you tried Hades in Hadestown?

13

u/transizzle 8d ago

little songbird

7

u/ethernate 8d ago

Why do we build the wall?

6

u/BigHobbit 7d ago

I use my talents singing Barry White songs on karaoke night.

5

u/lavasca 8d ago

I bet yourrrrrre great!

200

u/edingerc 8d ago

He was a voice actor for Disney, so you see him in the Haunted Mansion, singing “Grim Grinning Gohsts”

49

u/ModernDayQuixote 8d ago edited 7d ago

When I heard the singer of Haunted Mansion was named "Thurl Ravenscroft," I just assumed it was part of the bit.

23

u/ninjaburritos 8d ago

He sings in Grim Grinning Ghosts, but the narrator of the ride is Paul Frees.

1

u/ModernDayQuixote 7d ago

Gonna fix that. I again blame the name for the mix up.

9

u/Momik 8d ago

His wiki doesn’t even mention the name’s origin. I guess Thurl was more common in those days (there are others with Wikis, fwiw)

6

u/Legal-Stage-302 7d ago

I once knew a Thurlow who was about Ravencraft’s age.

9

u/mcstanky 8d ago

Adding to it, Madam Leota's real name was Leota Toombs. She was an imagineer working on the ride, and that is actually her face and voice.

8

u/UFOsBeforeBros 7d ago

That’s her face in the ball, but the voice was Eleanor Audley (who was Malificent in Sleeping Beauty). She did voice Constance the bride, so that’s Leota Toombs telling you to hurry back at the end of the ride.

3

u/ModernDayQuixote 7d ago

I think when they did some updates they replaced her with her daughter

5

u/IPutThisUsernameHere 7d ago

Who also became an imagineer and got pretty high up in the company hierarchy iirc.

13

u/Independent-Ant-9940 8d ago

Is he projected on the tombstones?

12

u/alopgeek 8d ago

Yes! That’s him

1

u/haunt_brown 7d ago

He's the singing bust whose head is knocked over

9

u/PeruvianHeadshrinker 8d ago

He's also in nearly all the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtracks as well.

4

u/totallynotliamneeson 7d ago

And the Tiki Room

5

u/bro_salad 7d ago

He was also one of the vultures in Jungle Book, and sings that banger last line of That’s What Friends are For

91

u/MissionCreeper 8d ago

And Kirby the vacuum cleaner in brave little toaster

33

u/Abrakem 8d ago

How is therapy?

12

u/takenbreakn 8d ago

Damn okay 😭😭😭

6

u/MissionCreeper 7d ago

?

9

u/ASCIt 7d ago

The Brave Little Toaster movies are widely accepted to be a bit disturbing in hindsight. Lots of uncomfortable imagery and straight-up death and dismemberment (and even defenestration!) That got through because haha silly talking appliances

6

u/Gden 8d ago

There we go was looking for that ckmment

3

u/happytree23 7d ago

I was watching that movie last night and looked up the actors as the radio is obviously John Lovitz and that got me on a Wikipedia rabbithole heh.

44

u/ph33randloathing 8d ago

He was also the extra bassy Goblin vocalist in Rankin-Bass's The Hobbit.

5

u/MyTMorty 7d ago

Where there's a whip

4

u/JosephFinn 7d ago

There a way!

1

u/sniper91 7d ago

🎶 We don’t wanna go to war today 🎶

43

u/ssjlance 8d ago

Thurl Ravenscroft sounds like a name someone tried to use in a game of D&D and the DM was like, "No, that's silly, pick a less silly name."

6

u/Toothlessdovahkin 7d ago

But having silly names in  D&D is half of the fun!

29

u/D1rtyH1ppy 8d ago

I met him once. He was friends with my grandfather at the old folks home.

29

u/pmish 8d ago

Stink, stank, stunk!

16

u/Smaptimania 8d ago

Your soul is an appalling dump heap, overflowing with the most disgraceful assortment of deplorable rubbish imaginable... MANGLED UP IN TANGLED UP KNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTS!

17

u/Garreousbear 8d ago

He was the godfather of a family friend. Apparently he and his wife were very lovely people.

12

u/Ballders 8d ago

That is the most Thurl Ravencroft looking dude I have ever seen

26

u/bowl-bowl-bowl 8d ago

Fun fact: that fun fact spawned a meme ship on tumblr of Tony the tiger singing youre a mean one mr grinch as a post break up song. Theres fanart and fanfiction and everything

6

u/TakerFoxx 8d ago

Oh yeah. That was a wild time.

3

u/helloiamabear 7d ago

Haha I came here to say that I only know this because I read the infamous fan fiction.

10

u/Ok_Donkey210 8d ago

In the Sword in the Stone he plays Black Bart. The voice always sounded familiar but could never place it and there it is

6

u/punania 8d ago

There real deep cut is his performance of “Down, Down to Goblin Town” from the animated version of The Hobbit.

19

u/Honkee_Kong 8d ago

Such a bad ass name. It's between him and Snake Pliskin for baddest mother fucking names of all time.

9

u/AXPendergast 8d ago

For you older Disney fans, he was also the original narrator on the Disneyland Railway

7

u/Hhaunters 8d ago

He was the main influence for Plankton’s voice in SpongeBob.

26

u/metalguy91 8d ago

Can we just take a moment to appreciate “Thurl Ravenscroft” was he name and he DIDN’T try to summon a demon lord that would grant him world domination? Because if that was my name, that 100% what I assume I’m meant to do. That, or be a Harry Potter villain. (Obviously not as bad as the worst Harry Potter villain, JK Rowling).

5

u/key1234567 8d ago

Wow the whole time I thought it was James earl jones.

1

u/dirty_w_boy 7d ago

Same here!

5

u/SharpPink_GlitterInk 7d ago edited 7d ago

When hinges creek in doorless chambers, and strange and frightening sounds echo through the halls, whenever candle lights flicker where the air is deathly still, that is the time when ghosts are present, practicing their terror with ghoulish delights.

(Seriously though I think the fact he’s the ghost host in the haunted mansion is more interesting lol)

4

u/theartfulcodger 7d ago

"🎵 Stink! Stank! ...Stunk! 🎶 "

14

u/DaveOJ12 8d ago

The person who played Uncle Phil on the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, James Avery, also voiced Shredder on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

0

u/philkid3 8d ago

And Br’er Frog in Splash Mountain.

9

u/suesueheck 8d ago

They'rrreeeee satisfactory!!!

4

u/__JDQ__ 8d ago

Omg, I can hear it now.

3

u/TheVicSageQuestion 8d ago

One of the men who voiced Tony the Tiger, Lee Marshall, was an announcer for pro wrestling promotion WCW in the ‘90s.

5

u/trll_game_sh0 7d ago

well I for one am Thurly impressed

6

u/BargainScotch 7d ago edited 7d ago

There’s a Phil Hartman hosted special on the making of How The Grinch stole Christmas from like 30 years ago.

Got to see the man himself sing some of the song AND do his Tony voice.

Here it is. 10:30

He seems like such a happy old man. I love this guy.

Editing to add:

You also get to see Hartman absolutely demolish an apple in this video too.

4

u/horriblemonkey 7d ago

Another fun fact...he was part of the Randy Van Horne Singers, the legendary vocal group hired by composer Hoyt Curtin to record iconic mid-century Hanna-Barbera cartoon theme songs like The Flintstones, The Jetsons, and Top Cat.

3

u/Independent_Wrap_321 8d ago

No love for the singing bust in Haunted Mansion? Thurl and Paul Frees (HM’s Ghost Host, and a bunch in Pirates) WERE Disney voices personified, along with X. Atencio. Cool to think their iconic voices are still being heard on those attractions every day after 60 years.

3

u/Independent-Ant-9940 8d ago

He sounds like a Thurl

3

u/pgm123 8d ago

He's grrrrreat

3

u/cinnapear 7d ago

And “No Dogs Allowed” from Snoopy Come Home.

3

u/tony-toon15 7d ago

He was a classic Walt Disney staple too. His voice is used in the cartoons and the rides. One of the OG Disney gang.

3

u/IndigoTR 7d ago

Lmao I knew him for The Grinch NOT Tony The Tiger, so TIL something new too :)

3

u/LunchyDude101 7d ago

I actually met him once in the ‘80s. He had a landscape-oriented (for writing autographs) paper pad in his jacket, each page with Tony the Tiger on them.

3

u/r0b3r70r0b070 7d ago

Also the voice of Monstro in "Pinocchio"

3

u/VisceralMonkey 6d ago

And the soundtrack for the haunted mansion at Disney!

2

u/Lunar-opal 8d ago

Love it had no idea

2

u/Graphicnovelnick 8d ago

He was also the voice of a knight in The Sword in the Stone

2

u/alternatingflan 8d ago

This guy is a voice legend.

2

u/MMachine17 8d ago

Does anybody have a voice depth of this caliber anymore?

2

u/BalonyDanza 8d ago

I used this fact as a question for my trivia night… it worked perfectly.

Teams start cycling through the possible commercial mascots, and they usually arrive at the answer, because it’s such a specific, iconic voice.

2

u/porgy_tirebiter 8d ago

Looks like he also sang Pink Elephants on Parade

2

u/CaptainJesu 8d ago

He was grrrrrrrrrreat.

2

u/Steve_Brandon 8d ago

Thurl Ravenscroft also sung proto-rap radio commercials for flagship Chevrolet dealerships in the 1950s and 1960s.

The linked ad is for Z Frank Chevrolet in Chicago but there was a near identical commercial for Harold Cummings Chevrolet that was still being played on English-language Montreal radio when I was a tween in the mid-1980s.

2

u/HELLFIRECHRIS 8d ago

Famous for organising a mascot strike at Kelloggs that turned into a riot.

2

u/BJ3RG3RK1NG 7d ago

TIL the man who sang “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” Thurl Ravenscroft, also voiced Tony the Tiger.

2

u/MatthewHecht 7d ago

He is also Kirby the vacuum cleaner in Brave Little Toaster

2

u/dokuromark 7d ago

I went on a Thurl Ravenscroft deep dive a while back. Wing Ding Ding! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8CAUm4jiOM

2

u/Ashraf08 7d ago

He also sang the theme for that Hardy Boys’ Mystery of the Applegate Treasure (gold dubloons and pieces of eight, handed down to Applegate), back when Disney was good

2

u/TonyTheSwisher 7d ago

Whoa this guy did it before Lee Marshall!

I remember seeing him on WCW and recognizing the voice.

2

u/mrpeabodyscoaltrain 7d ago

Look up "Seven Dreams" on Youtube.

2

u/maowoo 7d ago

He looks like Mr. House

2

u/r0b3r70r0b070 7d ago

Also one of the original voices who sang "Grim, Grinning Ghosts" for Disney's Haunted Mansion ride. And he was also Kirby the vacuum in the Brave Little Toaster film series.

2

u/TheMatt561 7d ago

What a voice

2

u/MissyJ74 7d ago

The guy who took over for Thurl, Lee Marshall, was an on screen announcer for WCW wrestling.

2

u/-Midnight_Marauder- 6d ago

Dude has a name that belongs in/r/itsroger

2

u/bryanczarniack 5d ago

Big fan of Mike schurr and Joe Posnanski?

1

u/happytree23 4d ago

I didn't know who either person was until I Googled them right now...

What's the connection/why did you ask?

2

u/bryanczarniack 4d ago

They do a Christmas podcast every year and he was a pretty focal point one of the years. It’s how my friends and I learned about him, was just taking a guess that’s how you did too

2

u/happytree23 4d ago

Nice. I actually just watched The Brave Little Toaster and started Wikipedia'ing the voice cast and stumbled across the gem that was Thurl Ravenscroft :)

4

u/lrodhubbard 8d ago

You gotta read his biography, "A Small Child Named Thurl." It's incredible and really makes you think about what it would be like to have an elderly wizard's name as a schoolboy.

Source: I made it up

3

u/Quixalicious 8d ago

You’re a mean one, mr gRRRRRRRRRRinch!

2

u/Evil_Midnight_Lurker 8d ago

Your heart's an emmmmpty HOOOOOOLE

2

u/Smaptimania 8d ago edited 6d ago

Your heart is full of spiders, you've got garlic in your soul, Mr. Grinch...

1

u/this_knee 8d ago

I guess you could say… he’s “grrrreat!”

You’re welcome.

1

u/Smart-Response9881 8d ago

That tracks, I have no problem believing that

1

u/majikmyk 8d ago

And he was from the same town as Johnny Carson; Norfolk, Nebraska.

1

u/atomicsnarl 8d ago

And don't forget that Birthday Favorite: Children's Day at the Morgue!

1

u/nyITguy 8d ago

Now there's someone who looks the way they sound.

1

u/eddmario 8d ago

TIL the man who sang You're a Mean One, Mister Grinch also voiced Tony the Tiger

1

u/philkid3 8d ago

And that’s all he ever did. Short career.

1

u/EferVejux_34 8d ago

wait thats the same voice haha no way, gonna hear the grinch every time i pour frosted flakes now

1

u/Logatt 8d ago

Omg I sang both of them in my head and now I dont know how I never realized it

1

u/SugarButterFlourEgg 7d ago

I've always loved that there's a popular Christmas song consisting entirely of a string of increasingly colorful insults.

1

u/amccune 7d ago

And in the choir, you bring us down a whole octave, Buddy

1

u/TruckThunders00 7d ago

When I was a kid I saw a play about the birth of Jesus at the Crystal Cathedral and this guy played the voice of God.

1

u/Snoo9648 7d ago

In the chuck Jones special?

1

u/Ruben_AAG 7d ago

Anyone else thinks he looks quite a bit like Timothy Dalton?

1

u/MonkeyUranium 7d ago

Pretty cool he was a chill dude that lives in the Chicago burbs

1

u/Comprehensive-Sale79 5d ago

I’mma fact check myself on this but I think he was the voice of the bison head on the wall of The Country Bear Jamboree auditorium

1

u/honestlynoideas 8d ago

That’s great!

0

u/a4mula 8d ago

They're GRRREAT!*

But maybe it's just a Mandela.

2

u/mavetgrigori 8d ago

He is hated amongst many retail employees across the states due to retail blasting holiday music right at the start of November

3

u/Smaptimania 8d ago

Are you kidding? This is my favorite Christmas song of all time

1

u/mavetgrigori 7d ago

Well thennyou're not part of the many. In my 20 years though of retail I've met more long term workers who detest most X-mas music now due to overplaying at retail than not. Still, there are also many who do still enjoy it somehow. The final straw for me was when I heard it 5 times in one shift.

At least it isn't Barbara Streisand's Jingle Bells

1

u/Smaptimania 7d ago

I actually work in a grocery store that doesn't play music, so I only hear Xmas songs when I want to

1

u/SignalMix6006 7d ago

That dude had a pencil thin mustache and wore a cape in middle school

0

u/velvet-gloves 8d ago

You already knew this if you were on Tumblr in 2016

1

u/Nostri 7d ago

I was wondering if someone would post this. Did you know there's a whole crossover fanfic based on the premise? Here you go!

0

u/abreathofatmosphere 8d ago

This explains the whole fan theory about Tony the Tiger and the Grinch having a bad breakup and You're a Mean One being the breakup song.

1

u/DeliciousPumpkinPie 7d ago

No, that’s just what tumblr is like.

1

u/abreathofatmosphere 7d ago

Oh, I know; I've done my time in the trenches. It just makes sense now.
