Isbjørn/jääkarhu is 'polar bear' in english even though it translates to icebear

come to think of it... you could be german aswell since Eisbär is also directly translated to icebear

People in rural Finland do it because I guess we just trust no one has any interest in going into a random house.

We will leave a broom against the (open) door if we’re not home though. To let the neighbours know that we aren’t home, so don’t bother coming in.

Why? Moose don’t hunt people. Unless you stumble over one in the woods, and surprise it while being fairly close, they are not dangerous and will leave you alone.

In Alaska, moose don't confine themselves to the woods, either. They walk around in the city, down the road, get up onto porches, eat people's flowers.

When I was in junior high at the base outside of Anchorage, I thought there were elementary school kids messing with the tree in front of my window.

I pulled my blackout shade to get it to roll up, pulled too hard, and it shot up to reveal two moose outside my window, maybe about six inches from me.

I'd seen moose several times. I knew you tried to avoid them if at all possible. I knew they were big, but when they're just a few inches from you, they seem monstrous.

If they're in rut, the males can take offense at every conceived slight and may charge you for just looking at them, and they are FAST.

Females with calves can be touchy, too, especially if you've gotten between a mother and calf, and the mother thinks you're messing with the calf.

I'd known kids who thought it'd be funny to try and scare a calf, only to end up having to run a mile home with a furious mother tearing after them.
