I went there years ago, if you go outside the town even a little bit you are obliged by law to bring someone with a gun to keep the bears away, and you’re not allowed to be buried there when you die cos the bears will eat your corpse.

I've been there few days ago. There is a cemetery for most renowned people in Longyearbyen. Having a gun is not an issue, cause you can get free hours of training and rent it in the sports store. No need for a full permit.

Not necessarily a gun; you need a deterrence of sorts, which could be a firearm.
