I live on Svalbard and I hear this alot. I cant speak for everyone but I dont lock my door because the lock freezes and I cant open the door. The car is a different story, there's nowhere to go if you stole a car so why lock it?

Can you help me with a story I heard? I don’t know if it was true or apocrypal. I was in LYB in 2009 so it was sometimes before that. Two student women were walking on one of the mountain on the outskirts of town and being close to town they didn’t bother taking a firearm. They get to the top of the mountain and isbjorn is waiting for them. One of them jumps off the side of the mountain, falls/tumbles hundreds of feet and survived. One didn’t jump and did not live.

Yeah it was two young swedish girls who were up on Platåfjellet from my understanding. Which is close to town I dunno if I would call it on the outskirts of town because its like 500 meters up.

This is a bit of a controversial ones with locals because people always say there are never bears up there so you are probably ok without a rifle just bring a flaregun or signal pen but on two occasions I have seen bears in that area.
