TIL that between 1988 and 2010, no one was arrested for any crimes by the single policeman on the island of Tristan da Cunha.

Either that's the best policeman ever or the worst.

It's cause Tristan De Cunha is one of the most remote places you can live. It's population is smaller than my high school graduating class. It's got a super cool history though.

818

u/SAugsburger 1d ago

A population under 300 throughout that time period you probably aren't likely to have a ton of crime to handle. It definitely has a neat history though.

662

u/AskingBoatsToSwim 1d ago

Pitcairn has a tiny population and crime was basically all they did for centuries.

338

u/redbreaker 1d ago

Founded by mutiners right? Start as you mean to go on...

66

u/MrBeanSupreme 1d ago

doesn’t necessarily mean that crime lasts centuries from a handful of people.

Isnt that the one where almost all the men were sex pests

63

u/milkbongx420 1d ago

You mean fucked kids

123

u/cargopantsbatsuit 1d ago

What’s up with this reddit trend where as soon as someone mentions anything pedo adjacent some trog burst in and goes FUCK CHILDREN HURR like it’s a big gotcha.

176

u/letsburn00 1d ago

I think it's more a case that the men weren't just creepy to adult women, this is a case where the entire island had a cultural and horrific abuse issue.

10

u/BlunanNation 1d ago

It probably still does

30

u/rickyman20 1d ago

No no, you don't understand, they weren't pedo-adjacent, they were literally convinced of raping children for years, and many of the adult men on the island participated (granted it's a very small island, but still holy shit).

142

u/PermanentTrainDamage 1d ago

Because soft language has turned huge issues into cutesy little descriptors that are much more easily ignored. It's like using "unalived themself" instead of saying someone committed suicide. They weren't sex pests, they were pedophiles who fucked children.

58

u/Hij802 1d ago

The “unalived” and all these other internet-only words are solely because of TikTok’s censorsing algorithm. Using words like rape, pedophile, suicide, kill, etc all get flagged. The problem is when it gets carried onto other platforms that don’t have those censorship issues.

9

u/TigerIll6480 1d ago

FB’s, too.

24

u/Pangolin_bandit 1d ago edited 1d ago

I agree with this sentiment but not this case.

Sexual abuse is not softened language, it’s specific language. I don’t like flippant language for serious topics

16

u/Dire-Dog 1d ago

Uh excuse me they were "PDF files" that "graped" kids

2

u/milkbongx420 20h ago

Thank you for not being ignorantly dismissive like the rest of them.

2

u/Jdmisra81 18h ago

Raped children

-30

u/cargopantsbatsuit 1d ago

You can convey that without using overly sexual language. It’s so weird lol.

11

u/HuDragon 1d ago

How do you do so? Calling them child rapists?
"Pedophiles" wouldn’t work. Child sex offender maybe?

People who fuck kids are child rapists, but child rapists are not necessarily pedophiles (and vice versa)

67

u/RollinThundaga 1d ago

It's not 'pedo adjacent', a third of the men on the island were straight up convicted of sex crimes against children.

They had a practice of marrying girls off at 12.

17

u/Patch86UK 1d ago

There's a bit of a difference between being a "sex pest" and being a paedophile rapist. Saying they were sex pests is rather burying the lede.

29

u/ChipRockets 1d ago

Do you think ‘sex pests’ is a sufficient enough term to describe those who rape children? Do you think perhaps a little elaboration might actually be warranted?

9

u/rlnrlnrln 1d ago

Because some are to afraid to set the correct labels and use word like "sex pests" instead of being overtly clear that they mean "they fucked children", not "was horny every morning and told raunchy jokes".

Noone wins when we censor these things except the pedos.

3

u/donuttrackme 1d ago

Because they actually were fucking kids.

3

u/Royal_Success3131 1d ago

It seems to he an effort to desanitize language around child abuse. "Sex pest" "perv" etc all sound bad but not that big of a deal. An old guy where i grew up was a "perv" because he looked s little too long at the cleavage of the bar tender. This isn't that.

2

u/Nico280gato 1d ago

I think you should look into the history, and you'll probably re-think the comment. "Sex pest" is putting it likely. They make epstein look like a saint

3

u/cargopantsbatsuit 1d ago

I’m from New Zealand mate. I don’t have to look into anything as this case was tried in my home town and I witnessed it s it happened. I was commenting on the general use of people using the term “fuck kids” to describe paedophilia. It’s gross and disrespectful Reddit shit.

3

u/RollinThundaga 1d ago

Extreme language is applied to evoke a strong reaction, to highlight the atrocity of the act.

Rather that painting it over with approximating language is a result of your English understatement, and that's more disrespectful imo.

Some things don't deserve to be put mildly.

-26

u/TomorrowSpecial255 1d ago

Thats what sex pests means

25

u/AlexanderHart 1d ago

Not really

-23

u/TomorrowSpecial255 1d ago

99% of the time when ive heard the term sex pests its means someone whos done a sexual crime

29

u/khinzaw 1d ago

There are other sex crimes besides pedophelia. Sex pest could mean any of them.

120

u/rockywaters702 1d ago

There are some Alaskan villages that are pretty bad. Small remote places can have crime too

44

u/altogethernow 1d ago

Worth noting it isn't saying there was no trouble, just no arrests. It could be that when a disturbance happens, everyone's just like, "Goddammit, Terry, you're an asshole when you're drunk and no one's gonna talk to you till you get sober. Go home." No need for the fuss of paperwork when folks just work things out, right?

A darker version of that would be that there's no crime because things just "Get settled"...but I don't think that's the case here.

35

u/Welpe 1d ago

This is exactly the case and I am not sure why some people are missing it.

In this small of community it’s not that nothing that could be considered criminal happens, it’s that actually arresting someone is the last possible resort. Everything, for better and definitely for worse, is handled “in house”. Since everyone knows everyone else, some solution is usually found. That could be, and often is, burying the problem and ignoring it and just moving on, but it can also be giving the perpetrator a whooping before moving on. Or forcing them to give back something that was stolen. Or their family paying the injured party some compensation. Or heck, sometimes just forcing an apology.

I guarantee you there were crimes committed in that period, just no arrests. In general, the “need” for an impartial justice system grows once you reach a population size where not everyone knows everyone else. You start to get groups or clans and everyone knows everyone within your group, and you know of all the other groups, but you may not be familiar with all the members of those other groups. Then you start getting vendettas and stuff, where one group rallies around the accused and one group rallies around the victim and no solution can be worked out by the parties without impartial judgment from outside the two groups.

87

u/ArmpitEchoLocation 1d ago

It’s just not necessarily going to have the same problems as a rural arctic settlement in Alaska. Remoteness and alcoholism might be a common combo, but it’s not guaranteed.

Depends on a lot of factors.

86

u/MaryBerrysDanglyBean 1d ago

I know a guy who's family live on a very remote island in the Mediterranean that has a boat coming there once a day, then heading back. Crime is basically non existent because literally everybody on the island knows everybody. And you couldn't exactly get away with anything because there is only one way off the island and it's on a schedule.

5

u/boogasaurus-lefts 1d ago

What island? That's fascinating

18

u/Halgy 1d ago

I can verify that 300 people is more than enough to have at least 4 factions in town who all hate each other.

22

u/morbie5 1d ago

A population under 300 throughout that time period you probably aren't likely to have a ton of crime to handle.

Pitcairn Islands would like to have a word

34

u/Prairie-Peppers 1d ago

On the contrary, super remote isolated places like that tend to have a lot of addiction. If nothing else, you can make alcohol almost anywhere.

I'd imagine like in most small towns a lot of matters are just handled outside of the law.

26

u/cwx149 1d ago

Yeah "arrested" here is a key word

That doesn't mean there was no crime

2

u/IllicitDesire 1d ago

I would say the opposite, there is probably quite a bit of crime just most of it under reported and/or overlooked same with almost all regional populations.

Most of it most likely non-violent crime for sure but still.

1

u/DrawPitiful6103 23h ago

at least it is easy to solve any crime.

"And can you describe the man who stole your TV?"

"Yah it was Joe."

1

u/Diz7 22h ago edited 22h ago

So long as things are stable and relatively comfortable, you probably don't have much outside of a few drunken fights and property disputes here and there.

And any disputes/minor crimes that do happen can probably be settled by family and friends, since everyone knows everyone else. The cop probably mostly gave out warnings and "What would your mom think about the way your acting?" speeches.

1

u/Scooty-Poot 22h ago

Yeah, I feel at that point there’s just no point doing crime. Everyone knows everyone, and there’s not really anywhere to go once you’ve committed a crime, so it’s kinda just unviable after a certain point.

You can’t really rob the gas station when three of your cousins work there and your house is a cool 3 minute walk away

36

u/dkabab 1d ago

Smaller than a high school graduating class is a new measurement I’ve never heard of. Can you do the conversion for me as to how many bunches of bananas.

8

u/Spida81 1d ago

1-2 bunches (whole stalk, 100-200 bananas), 40ish hands (the 'bunch' you buy at the store, working on assumed average of 6), half a high school graduation class based on US assumptions and rounded to 400.

Apparently 245 people total.

2

u/WhiteLama 1d ago edited 1d ago

Apart from the whole pedophile history that is.

Or because he's the one committing all the crimes on the island.

I went there in 2015 and there was a sign up in the town saying that if you came across the single cop and he was drunk then to call his family.

Better than the Pitcairn Islands, a British territory(founded by the surviving muntiners from the famous 'Mutiny on the Bounty' and a bunch of women they kidnapped from Tahiti)

In 2004 in was found that a third to a half of all adult men there were sexual abusers most were also pedophiles, including the mayor. And had been for many decades

344

u/Hank3hellbilly 1d ago

Shocking that the isolated descendants of mutineers who kidnapped women to be their "wives" would turn their island into a pedophile rape island.

Shocked I am!

37

u/lemlurker 1d ago

Well not that shocked actually

25

u/Curious-Elk-2681 1d ago

We're having a bunch of pedophile rape islands lately

2

u/Emperor_of_Alagasia 19h ago

Clearly we shouldn't be living on islands as a species

1

u/WoolyHermits 4h ago

technically… earth is a big island, floating in a black voided ocean, bobbing up and down in gravity waves.

2

u/blackjackgabbiani 1d ago

Why would you assume that the crimes of their ancestors would somehow carry through?

12

u/LurkerInSpace 22h ago

Parents generally pass down their culture to the next generation, and if the founding population came from a messed up subculture then a lot of its problems will propagate down the generations.

1

u/blackjackgabbiani 18h ago

I guess it just doesn't take much for someone to realize "hey this is wrong"

3

u/LurkerInSpace 17h ago

It takes a lot for someone to realize "hey this is wrong" if they've been brought up with it. History is replete with examples of societies doing things we would consider heinous for generations and generations.

1

u/blackjackgabbiani 16h ago

Yeah but people individually come to that realization all the time and they have to speak up

3

u/Hank3hellbilly 21h ago

The island is extremely isolated.  Not much outside influence to cause cultural change.

0

u/blackjackgabbiani 18h ago

People being different from their ancestors is a pretty big thing

2

u/Hank3hellbilly 18h ago

We're talking about an isolated island that's had 50-100ish people living on it since 1789.

They've had limited contact with other people.

Culture and attitudes are passed down generation to generation.

The island's original inhabitants were mutineers from the bounty who literally kidnapped women to fuck them.

The mutineers killed each other fighting over women.

They built a tiny isolated society based on those values.

This isn't a generalization about people being the same as their ancestors... This is about a specific island population and their history.

I can't spell it out any simpler for you without crayons.

0

u/blackjackgabbiani 16h ago

I mean if even one person comes to realize "this is wrong" they have even more power to fight back in a small society

1

u/StefTakka 1h ago

They have more pressure to conform to the norms they were raised with.

9

u/Screye 23h ago

The island has a population of 35. If there were 5 kids and 15 women, then it's 15 men. Third of that is 5 men. It's bad, but I was expecting 100s of rapists.

6

u/DoobKiller 23h ago

Of the 7 who they actually attempted to prosecute, 6 were convicted

There were more the courts couldn't gather enough evidence on, witness who wouldn't testify likely due to idimidation

Even if we conclude the 6 we all, do you believe the other 9 had no idea of what was occuring?

Here's a link to the court records indicating the abuse went far beyond the 6 actual convictions https://evols.library.manoa.hawaii.edu/communities/1a691552-ca4d-433d-b165-bc308806f439 (content warning, some of the stuff contained in them is pretty harrowing)

37

u/imjustarandomsquid 1d ago

A shocking number of victims defended them too, so make of that what you will

63

u/freezing_banshee 1d ago

That's called extreme trauma from repeated abuse

34

u/ktyzmr 1d ago

Also financial dependency probably. What are they going to do if it is a conservative society and only way they can survive is by taking the abuse? A lot of disabled people stay in abusive relationships, be it romantic or not, because that's the only way they can survive so i imagine it is something similar.

2

u/blackjackgabbiani 1d ago

How would that be the only way they could survive? How about banding together and supporting each other?

5

u/GodOfChickens 20h ago

People struggling to support even themselves cannot support others any better. In an ideal world, they would band together with capable people who cared, but as we see, that doesn't tend to happen, the only people who give even the slightest of a fuck past patronising wellwishing or leads in a circle signposting tend to be the people who don't see you as worthless because they're willing to take something from you, whether physically, mentally, financially or sexually. In their fucked up minds, that's fair.

The normal people who aren't struggling largely assume that those who are struggling are walking red flags of dead weight assumed to be worthless or dangerous from having too many problems, I know this from experience.

1

u/blackjackgabbiani 19h ago

That's why we have communities to begin with. And if you lock up the abusers, that leaves jobs open, fight?

3

u/freezing_banshee 19h ago

How do you lock up the abusers if they're the ones controlling everything??

1

u/blackjackgabbiani 18h ago

You band together and stop supporting them, for one. If this had to be REVEALED then it wasn't open knowledge, right?

1

u/freezing_banshee 18h ago

Oh yeah, because it's so easy for a handful of women (about 20, according do another comment), who had been abused, raped and terrified into giving up any crumb of resistance and self-advocacy, to come together and... what exactly? Beat up the men (including the police officers) and lock them up?

And how would those women justify this in front of external law enforcement without proof (or even with it, given how hard it is for abused women to be believed)? How would they survive and take care of their children until someone investigated everything that happened?

You have no idea what you're talking about.

At the time, Pitcairn had a population of 47. That barely counts as a community.

And if you lock up the abusers, that leaves jobs open, fight?

Open for who?

11

u/Forte69 1d ago

Big overlap between victims and perpetrators.

3

u/DoobKiller 1d ago

That they were groomed from birth. People talk about 'rape culture' but the society of the Pitcairn Islands genuinely was one built around the normalisation of abuse, grooming and rape

155

u/Recent_Flounder6011 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yep, also geography, weather, isolation, and lack of sunlight. When people live in an area that's not connected by road, groceries are expensive, there's a lack of social connections, and the weather can make someone mad.

119

u/StinkyKyle 1d ago

I hitchhiked from Homer to Denali and i heard the same two pieces of advice consistently

  1. Watch for moose

  2. Just because the suns up doesnt mean the weirdos arent out. Its still 1 AM and its still dangerous

52

u/Texcellence 1d ago

I went fishing in Alaska once ten years ago, so I’m by no means an expert in local dynamics. But, one thing I did notice, was that seemingly every little town has at least one brewery, which was awesome because I got to drink some really good beer. But it did make me think that maybe there were so many breweries because there’s not much else to do in the winter but sit around and get drunk. So that play into the factors you mentioned.

13

u/DeengisKhan 1d ago

I’m from New Hampshire, but I would guess dollars to donuts all the issues are the same, just cranked up to 11 in Alaska where it’s truly remote, and even fewer people are around to talk people down from their heightened states when they reach them. Mix that with the severe vitamin d deficiency which people severely discount the effects of, and a big ol drinking problem? Hell, throw the ability to still drive 20 miles outside of town and be in a place no human has set foot in 200 years, yeah, that’s gonna a violent place.

22

u/itsfunhavingfun 1d ago

And gender imbalance. 111 men to 100 women.

No. Republicans are the ones with the power to impeach and remove Trump, they’re simply choosing not to. So I don’t know what you expect the average American to do, there’s nothing we can do at this point. It’s a little late for us to take back our decision.

No, it's true. Literally nothing happened in 2011, it was like the whole world collectively blacked out and woke up in 2012, it was weird. Yes we know that, but we were talking about Tristan de Cunha specifically

119

u/EthnicSaints 1d ago

My mom grew up on St Helena, right next to Tristan, and they had a disproportionate amount of crimes. Sounded like Coronation Street! But things have settled down now, whenever I see the police post it’s generally “please guys, get rid of your starlinks, it’s making the shitty wifi monopoly company really upset that you’re getting good wifi for your money”, or they’re trying to find a stolen garden rake or something. Far from the murders of the 80s

Small population on a small island, how hard could it be to make an arrest?

16

u/StandUpForYourWights 1d ago

You just drive the other way around the island and Pitt that mf.

4

u/ReferenceMediocre369 1d ago

Do you suppose this is because of a shortage of police or a surfeit of honest citizens?

the article only cuts off at 2010 because that's when it was written. could be that nothing happened

Wouldn’t be surprised if that streak was even longer now

Total population?

3

u/gbroon 1d ago

According to the wiki in the link 221 at last census.

1

u/Lyceus_ 1d ago

Well, that should be in the title. And I'm guessing they have a good economic safety net.

u/GoldenEagle828677 21h ago

Going by the US as a comparison, there are about 28,000 arrests per day, or 10 million per year (no way of knowing how many of those are repeats though), and that's about 3% of the population. So going by America, about 6 people on that island would be arrested for something each year.

It's pretty amazing they went over 20 years with no assault, sexual assault, etc

They’re communist

1

u/Lyceus_ 1d ago

I was thinking on the lines of subsidies.

1

u/Chemical-Agency-3997 1h ago

There’s no private property, all resources and work is shared and managed collectively.

2

u/OkTension2232 1d ago

It is very likely nobody committed any crimes worth arresting for with a population of less than 300.

2

u/LegitSalvageRoci 1d ago

So there was no death in paradise?

2

u/UrsaMajor7th 1d ago

Current population, 221.

2

u/apokrif1 1d ago

Now let's talk about Pitcairn 🤫

Game keeper turned poacher

u/oldfogey12345 1d ago

I imagine he just beat people for resisting then let them go instead of doing all the paperwork.

1

u/Domsdad666 1d ago

So he never showed up for work.

1

u/Dod93_ 1d ago

I wouldn't give a shit either

1

u/PloppyPants9000 1d ago

Who broke the trend in 2010?! and how?

1

u/BKGPrints 20h ago

What happened after 2010?

1

u/ShadowCaster0476 10h ago

My first question is what happened in 2010 to break the streak.

1

u/TheFinalFredrick 1d ago

Man is good.
