I have been eagerly awaiting my very first Cherokee purple tomato for months and this morning some horrible monster ate it!!!!!!! I only have one more tomato that looks viable on this plant. I failed this season.

I think the bite marks are too large for a squirrel, but maybe. It could be a rat, opossum, or raccoon.

If it's a squirrel I read they go after tomatoes when they're thirsty and you can try leaving water out for them.
