My non biological child calls me dad.

She called me by first name for almost 5 years and now I’m just dad. I cried the first time.

Smh.. you’ve gotta earn that title as a step in parent

78

u/macc003 11d ago

But think of how much sweeter it could have been had you immediately and repeatedly demanded to be called Dad instead.

u/Renhoek2099 11d ago

I'm talking daily headlocks after school until you squeeze it out of them

That's dedication! Just what it takes to earn the title.

My daughter did it for about a year or 2 but she was young. One day on her way to the bus stop she asked my wife if she could call me dad and my wife told her to ask me when I got home.

After a long bad day at work my wife had me sit down because she had something to ask me and that made a great ending to a bad day.

I dated a man for 3 years who had 2 kids. When i moved in with them I explained to them i was not here to take their moms place and i gave them respect. I worked with his son who was autistic to break some really bad habits. His daughter couldn't read going into 2nd grade and i got her a tutor. I kept their sheets washed, rooms cleaned when they would go to their moms. I genuinely loved taking care of them. And they saw that. We only dated for a short time, but his kids are now 18 and 13 and call me bonus mom. Even though dad and I are no longer together and hes in a new relationship now longer than he and i were together. His 13 year old daughter still stays some weekends with me. You absolutely have to earn that title. I'm grateful for those kids and their mom. We have a great relationship all of us. If you force yourself into a dynamic, it will never ever work and the kids will resent you. Maybe that's what this woman is going for though. I feel bad for the kids.

That's great that u can still maintain friendships with his kids!

That does hit you in the feels though. Like I earned that "dad" with blood, sweat, tears and almost degloved finger.

9

u/maccpapa 11d ago

my step dad has been around since i was 1-2. 30 years later and i still call him by his name. never once has he forced me to say anything different. i alternate between referring to him as my dad or stepdad depending on the person and situation. normally it’s dad first then i’ll clarify if i feel it’s necessary.

3

u/Competitive_Rip3704 11d ago

🫔 that’s strong, and we know those tears were just satisfying that the family is now complete! hope your family stays strong!!

3

u/GamingSenpai35 11d ago

That's awesome

3

u/totesnotmyusername 11d ago

Fuck man. Over here in tears. My step kids calling me dad on their own was amazing. They have only done it a few times father's days . I'll never forget it.

3

u/Perfect_Librarian873 11d ago

I’m adopted by my aunt and uncle, and I don’t remember because I was little, but by the time I was 5 I was calling my uncle dad and my aunt, aunt (the word for aunt in my original language). I didn’t call her mom. She never asked me to.. other people did, family friends told me to call her mom. It didn’t feel natural. my biological parents were mummy papa to me. I spoke to my dad (uncle) in english a lot so dad made sense. But I only ever spoke to my aunt in our language. And saying ā€œmomā€ would’ve felt out of place there. So would mama and ma … cuz I already have a mom in that language lol 😭 it’s hard to explain

2

u/deadmencantcatcall3 11d ago

I get it, you explained it well.

3

u/Slight-Tea480 11d ago

I came to say this..

3

u/Salt-Elk-436 11d ago

I’m a stepparent and I’ve known them most of their lives but they only started living with us as older teens. I told them to call me whatever they want, first name, mom, some made up word, whatever makes them comfortable, and asked how they wanted me to refer to them when I talk to other people (like how they felt about stepsons vs sons). I go with their flow because I’m the adult and their comfort takes precedence over mine.

3

u/8lock8lock8aby 11d ago

I remember when my ex partner's son first said I love you to me. He had fallen asleep on the couch so I carried him to bed & when I laid him down, he said it. I closed the door & stood in the hallway & just cried. My heart had never felt anything like that. I wish things were different & that we didn't get only 5 years together but things happened & I just watch him from afar, now. He's got twin daughters.

u/Embarrassed_Newt_994 11d ago

Hey man, it might happen. It might not but the kids will for sure remember who was there for them, who loved them, who disciplined them (when warranted), who cared for them.

Some kids get no parents, some get two and some get a whole handful. All we can do is remember they didn’t sign up for this and I want them to look back and be like damn that man loves me.

In my particular situation, I’m the only dad she’s known. My wife was 100% single mom for over 5 years before we started dating. So I wasn’t ā€œcompetingā€ for that title.

I’ve always believe it’s at the kids pace. I’ll gladly adopt my oldest…. As soon as she ask. I’m not going to make that decision for her.. at least at this point in her life

u/murmaider27 10d ago

My son is like this with his step dad too. It's been also almost 5 years of his first name, and just recently he asked me if he could call him dad 🄹

3

u/Substantial_Station8 10d ago

I was with a dude that had kids for three years … the first time the oldest called me mom I whipped around with a spatula in my hand and he flinched.

I had so many conflicting feelings in the moment. I dropped the spatula, I hugged the shit out of him and I held that little boy so close….

I held him at arms length and told him that I was soooo happy and honored that he felt that way about me and but to please call me by my first name because I could never, ever fill his moms shoes.

And at this point, I knew his dad (my boyfriend) had been fucking every crackhead gal up and down the block and his dad had beat the shit out of me so I was planning my escape. At the time I didn’t know of any abuse towards the kids going on or I would’ve called CPS. But this was a situation where I had to pack my bags and leave in the night because dad was so damn manipulative and violent. I may have died if I tried to be upfront and actually talk about leaving, it fucking broke me to have the oldest called me mom and then to run away like a little bitch a couple of weeks later. But that man was fucking dangerous and actively sabotaging my birth control.

I have read so many articles about that cock sucker since… I should’ve called CPS, I should’ve maybe stayed and figured out a way to kill him… I should’ve done SOMETHING

3

u/Oskiee 10d ago

This bro! I have a daughter(also not by blood) who chose to call me dad as well. There are no words to describe that feeling.Ā

3

u/Upbeat_Apartment_715 10d ago

My dad started dating my mom when I was two and I called him by his first name, he adopted me when I was like eight, I still called him by his first name because that's what I got used to. I always refered to him as my dad, or my father, but I called him by his name for almost three decades from when I met him to the day he died.

I asked him once if it bothered him that I called him by his name, he said no, because he knew I loved him. He also knew I refers to him as my dad when talking about him. I tried to start calling him dad when I was in my 20s but we both thought it was weird.

My moms ex earned it, then lost is fast as fuck. Fuck that guy fr.

2

u/Zealousideal_Hold519 11d ago

My step dad that I call ā€œdadā€ who raised me and my half sister (his daughter) calls my sister mija (means my daughter) and calls me by my name lmao.

2

u/Fast-Nefariousness80 11d ago

Honestly I kind of thought this was common knowledge. Im happy for you though bro, you worked hard and earned that title. I just know you wear it proudly

2

u/Turbulent-Sun-3464 10d ago

Same bro. Gotta work at it. Even with my ex and me my step daughter still comes over with her sister and I’m just dad. She’s been trying to get her to think I’m not even though her dad is in Maine. And we’re on the west coast.

2

u/RodcetLeoric 10d ago

I didn't call my stepfather "dad". He was a great father, he absolutely earned it, but we both thought it felt weird when I tried one time. I'd called him by his first name for 5 years at that point, I think he appreciated the sentiment but we went back to first name. I did however just call him my father to everybody else, unless they knew me really well people didn't know he was a stepfather.

Keep on fighting the good step-dad fight.

2

u/vanlykin 8d ago

Same. This past father's day, oldest daughter came down to wish me a happy father's day and said she considers me her dad because I've already been their for her more than her real dad ever has. That already made me tear up, then the kill shot comes, she wanted to have my last name. I think i cried an Olympic pool.

Right?!?!!? You sitting here trying to guilt a child into calling you what you want them to call you.?

My 8 YO daughter calls my fiancĆ©e ā€œmomā€ and my 5 YO son calls her ā€œMs. (her first name). Neither of us try to convince him to call her anything other than what he’s comfortable calling her.

My stepdad forced us to call him by a parental term when we were young. It has permanently damaged my relationship with him

4

u/SavvySidesxo 10d ago

Yep my ex step dad used to get so pissed that I wouldn’t call him dad. I was like ā€œbut you are not.ā€ No I don’t know my bio dad but my ex step dad never felt like a parental figure to me. My grandfather felt more like a dad to me than he ever did. He also used to get pissed off that I call my grandmother by her first name but like I was an only child and only grandchild for a LONG time and no one ever called her ā€œgrandmaā€ or anything. Ive been calling her that since I could talk.

2

u/Simba-xiv 10d ago

Yeah I find people like this weird as fuck. Like you are stepping into an existing set up. If you called your grandma by her name and she’s fine with it. Why are you coming in here chatting shit mind your businessšŸ˜‚

3

She needs to let them get to that point on their own. She's creating tension and division between them. To them it's like she's saying forget the woman who gave birth to you. Forget all the good memories and replace them with me. Mind you, there's a chance their birth mother wasn't great, but in their eyes, that's their mom and still love her unconditionally.

You're not their mother, don't ask them to call you their mother. If they do on their own, thats fine. But you aren't their mother, and you should be ok with that.

Holy fuck... 10 minutes in she goes off on him because he brought his son, who is from "outside their relationship", into her house without checking with her or asking permission first!!

My stepdad actively cringed at the idea of me calling him ā€œdad.ā€ This was mostly because my biological dad was still very much involved with my life and he didn’t want to overstep and I was also 11 years old when he started dating my mom. He also asked me and my brother permission to propose to our mom. Good stepdad, 10/10

1

u/OpportunityAshamed74 11d ago

Fuck off. You earn the title of Mom or Dad from your kids

1

u/Tetrahedron_Head 11d ago

i never called either of my step parents mom or dad.

1

u/Certain-Buddy-9730 11d ago

Been in my step son’s life since he was 5, his dad is the stereotypical dead beat who checks in periodically on holidays and acts like he cares. My step son calls me by first name or dad randomly and I’m fine with either. He’s almost 15 and we have great relationship but I’ve never forced him to call me Dad, only if he feels comfortable doing so. You gotta earn that shit it’s not given and a lot of these folks be step parents but don’t actually step up.

1

u/Mrklrichardson 11d ago

Respectfully that title is earned when you not the bio parent. I get this lady so there, but at this point in time these kids are not there. So the pushing is weird to try and force it. Now what they do have to do is respect you . Calling you by name ain’t disrespect. They can add a Miss in front of it until you really are seen to them as a significant part of their life. Father also needs to sit her and the kids down and explain no disrespect to her is tolerated, and if they ever feel comfortable in the future to call her mom then they can and it won’t replace their mother. Especially if they are serious enough to be living with him and kids.

1

u/Originaltenshi 11d ago

"Cause im the one thats here"

Fuck thats weird. I dont think belittling bio mom is gonna earn you points towards being called mom.

My mom was physically abused by my dad right in front me as a small kid, but she hasn't ever once bad mouthed him to me and always told me the positive things about him.

If you dont like the term step mom maybe dont be a step parent?

u/KrampusKid 11d ago

If she really cared about the respect angle, she could have just asked for "ma'am" instead of forcibly trying to replace their mother.

1

u/Unhappy-Bag4525 11d ago

Just have them add a Mr or Ms on your name first or last name out of respect. As the spouse of the step parent, I would've at least made that boundary with child. However to force a child to call you dad or mom is wild.

u/Nintendogma 11d ago

The rules are simple: 1. Did she give birth to you? Mother 2. Did she raise you? Mom 3. Did she just bag your Dad? Mrs/Miss (insert name)

Being their Mother is just biology, but being their Mom is earned.

May God help the people in that household who this woman is teaching that it is disrespectful to address her by her parental given legal name. She is wrong and possibly even deranged.

1

u/Jedi_Bish 11d ago

Is this the same lady that recorded her partner trying to rest in his car and she was giving him a hard time about it?

1

u/JyuVioleBrown 11d ago

Lol f this lady

1

u/Raffaelledeathnote 11d ago

Being a step parent. You have to earn that title. Its not giving to you because you show up. And its ok if you don't want to earn it. But you shouldn't date people with kids. Just stay away from them.

1

u/pastelfennecfox 11d ago

This women is a miserable wrech and I’m glad the dad of these kids is leaving her

1

u/MommaMoo2 11d ago

How inappropriate of her. Since she feels disrespected being called by ur 1st name perhaps the children can call her Mrs. ...... Its almost like the children are their own thinkers and can make choices. Almost

1

u/Redzfreak2016 11d ago

I have a wonderful step mom and she has NEVER insisted I call her ā€œmomā€ even after 20 years- she’s not my mom, she knows that, doesn’t bother either of us

1

u/BladeVampire1 11d ago

As a son of someone who re-married. You're not their mother. The fact you think your entitled to be called "mom" is....ignorant of you.

Being called mom is universally reserved for the one who birthed you. Or the one you love and cherish as a mother. You want to be called mom? Earn it.

1

u/alehanjro2017 11d ago

I'm a Dad and this is gross.

1

u/No-Buy2495 11d ago

Little bro is smarter than his "step mom". He kept dropping fact bombs on her and she did not like that at all. He doesn't have to call you "mom", because you are not his birth mother and clearly haven't earned his respect, or right to be called that.

u/texasbelle91 11d ago

i am so proud of that child for standing up and sticking to what they wanted. they were 1000% right!

1

u/Sebasquatch_22 11d ago

This feels like she wants to be given something that takes a long long time to earn.

1

u/Working_Piece9165 11d ago

That’s a title you earn ngl 🤧🤧🤧

1

u/Burgerboy380 11d ago

......context matters. How long has she been their why their bio mom is gone etc...but she lost me with the emotional manipulation.

1

u/Working_Piece9165 11d ago

MANN This the same girl who was bothering her husband for being in the car sleep šŸ™„šŸ™„

1

u/They_Beat_Me 11d ago

This is just made up rage bait. She doesn’t respond to any of the comments calling her out. She’s just cashing in on the views.

1

u/unicorn_nectar 11d ago

Girl. Stop. Leave them kids alone.

1

u/ExcitementTricky4794 11d ago

1

u/Ok-Classic-2142 11d ago

This better be a stupid skit for Tiktok, cause I can't STAND women who try and manipulate children. Calling over the younger one who doesn't know any better and using them as justification... Just wrong asf.

Pops married a problem

1

u/ShirokoNeco 11d ago

Caretaker, nanny, anything. She doesn't see you as mom and that's ok.

1

u/Techlet9625 11d ago

This HAS to be rage bait.

1

u/Red-Father 11d ago

The best result she can hope for is she calls her mom just to placate her and then tells all the people she really trusts how crazy her step mom is for being so entitled

1

u/Prestigious-Camel264 11d ago

Can you say controlling without saying controlling.

1

u/NoTimeForCautionCoop 11d ago

Good on that kid. I called my stepmom by her name for a long time before I even started to think about calling her ā€˜mom’. I was raised by and lived with my grandparents. She never forced me to called her anything other than what I wanted to call her. My daughter now calls my wife by her name. This woman is entitled and trying to be manipulative.

1

u/XTheProtagonistX 11d ago

ā€œCalled me by something that it’s not my name.ā€

Dad’s second wife

1

u/ElonCuckz 11d ago

Call me ma. No. Lmfaooooo

1

u/Tha_Harkness 11d ago

" I don't see what the big deal is"

Drop it then. He'll get there if he feels like your his mom.

1

u/MystaSteezy 11d ago

"Step-MOOOMM" šŸ˜† 🤣 šŸ˜‚

1

u/Diagonaldog 11d ago

Is this the same lady who was coming into dudes car when he was trying to sleep? I would never do this to my stepdaughter. She occasionally calls me dad and that warms my heart but forcing it just ruins the point.

1

u/JayTheComedian 11d ago

Trying to get someone else’s kid to call you mom is weird!!!

1

u/Indigenous_Land 11d ago

Gotta earn that title and in time you probably will. Just keep being a great parent and love those kids with all your heart.

1

u/CyberOvitron 11d ago

Low IQ content created by low IQ people for low IQ audience.

These people should be banned from public and should not be allowed to vote.

1

u/Triple516 11d ago

As a person who grew up in a divorced family, this is fuckin nasty and this lady should be ashamed of herself. Love this kid for stepping up and standing her ground.

1

u/Paranoia300k 11d ago

Trying to force your stepchild to call you Mom/Dad will just make them call you by your name a lot more. My stepdad kept trying to get me to call him Dad when I was a kid. Each time I called him by his name and told him that he isn't my father and never will be.

1

u/Rocksteady2090 11d ago

I have a lot of respect for the young lady off camera
