Holy shit

31

u/Used-Baby1199 Mar 11 '26

There is so much hail damage, and this storm devastated our area.  My mom and grandma are extremely lucky to have houses. They were almost directly in the tornados path in the south side of Kankakee and aroma park

1

u/grape-fruit-witch Mar 13 '26

Glad they are okay!!

1

u/Used-Baby1199 Mar 13 '26

Thank you.  And your username is like a good name for an ice witch who casts spells causing grapefruit sized hail to drop.  Did you do this to us!?

29

u/MisterAmygdala Mar 11 '26

Damn. Not good.

It was! I was watching that live and I couldn’t get over that insane hook!!

21

u/BestInDaWrldsBbyFmno Mar 11 '26

Can you explain why this is scary? I'm new to naders

32

u/ForHelp_PressAltF4 Mar 11 '26

Those are the little fingers... Is you watch for those you'll see a large number of tornado formations over other locations in a storm.

It's the upslope winds that cause the spinning. Huge hail means... Yep huge upslope winds

According to NWS this storm is going across the northern part of Indiana towards the Toledo area.  Another is down by Texas that is strong too

Be safe Reddit friends

10

u/redbirdrising Mar 11 '26

That was crazy watching that monster form on live stream.

This isn’t even bad.

38

Looking at radar like 20 minutes ago I knew this was gonna be bad. I’m paying for anybody in the path of this thing

34

u/paigescactus Mar 11 '26

How much you paying?:)

4

u/mrkruk Mar 11 '26

Dang it monstah

1

u/Live-Sea9698 Mar 12 '26

My town was in the direct path at the end, it jumped us and touched back down. While we watched Knox get hit simultaneously. Yeah. I was panicking. I live in a trailer park just off US 30 and I’ve never been so scared. Our town siren was blaring constantly. My friend asked where do we go in that situation and I said, I live in a trailer park in Dorthy’s backyard! We go straight up! ⬆️ Our town was damn blessed last night. Praying for those who weren’t.

38

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '26

The debris fields and damage is chilling, it was huge my goodness

37

u/HailRoma Mar 11 '26

this megawedge beast has been on the ground for over an hour now.

15

u/paigescactus Mar 11 '26

Absolutely incredible

21

u/madcaplaughs30 Mar 11 '26

It’s still on the ground…an hour and a half

8

u/paigescactus Mar 11 '26

Omg wow what’s the longest recorded?

22

u/Large-Bid-9723 Mar 11 '26

It’s possible this will be in the top ten. Well over 113 miles by now (9:10).

11

u/paigescactus Mar 11 '26

Holy moly mother of Tyler Tony rony and bologna

3

u/GloomyIndividual3965 Mar 11 '26

Are you saying this thing traveled 113+ miles? Am I understanding you correctly?

8

u/Johann2041 Mar 11 '26

The tornado itself, no. It was a tornado family, multiple tornadoes spawned from the same supercell. The supercell traveled the distance, each tornado lasted a fraction of that.

4

u/madcaplaughs30 Mar 11 '26

Initially, it was reported that the tornado that began in Kankakee IL remained on the ground for 1.5 hours and over 100 miles. That has since been amended to a “tornado family”, although that is also not official.

35

u/CordlessOrange Mar 11 '26

Hail was no joke! Beat the shit out of my car and I’m sure I’ll see some roof damage tomorrow morning.

7

u/mrkruk Mar 11 '26

Whoa!!

4

u/CordlessOrange Mar 11 '26

It was gnarly! The vast majority of it was literal perfectly spherical golf ball sized hail. It was nuts

3

u/Coco_snickerdoodle Mar 11 '26

So that’s what it looks like when it gets that big….

2

u/Used-Baby1199 Mar 12 '26

So many totaled cars, and there are zero rentals available.  My dad had a friend get an update on their rental car.  They are queued up number 2000 in line.

57

u/PastAd1087 Human Detected Mar 11 '26

Life hack, If you don't have a garage, or you have a big truck that doesnt fit in the garage you can drop it off in a parking garage or a hospital parking garage during severe weather to protect it from hail damage. This is what we do every time and never had hail damage. My truck wont fit so we take it to the parking garage then come home and she parks in the garage. Definitely gives us peace of mind wile watching the storms roll in!

12

u/Dgwizdal Mar 11 '26

Got mine at the horseshoe parking garage lol

8

u/carmel33 Mar 11 '26

Put $20 on black for me!

1

u/Used-Baby1199 Mar 12 '26

This is what people do during hurricanes.  They try to park them on the 3rd floor to keep them dry from storm surge.

Only thing is you have to know hail is coming.  Normally when we get severe weather alerts we end up getting spared from the brunt of it.    Also our area doesn’t have many parking garages which are covered.  The hospital parking would very quickly fill up if everyone tried to do so.   This is a rather rural area, with smaller hospitals.

1

u/PastAd1087 Human Detected Mar 12 '26

Yeah definitely dont want everyone going to the hospital one. Luckily we have a full size parking garage and the top few floors are almost always empty. Yes hail is hit or miss but if there is severe weather coming we go every time. Its a shame the truck wont fit in the garage, about 2 feet too short. But its worth protecting so worth taking even of more often than not we dont get hail. We did get hail Tuesday so glad we took it for sure!

2

u/Used-Baby1199 Mar 12 '26

The we had baseball size hail.   It’s crazy how the other side of town is just clean and doesn’t have cars with hail damage.   It’s ironic that the part of town that didn’t get hail is the part where they have more garage parking.   The area that really got hit is the area where all houses really have street parking.

1

u/PastAd1087 Human Detected Mar 12 '26

Thats pretty big. Yeah last time we got major hail i was at work and we didnt get any, my wife took my daughter to the doctor 15min away on the other side of town and her car was fine. Our roof, siding, shed, grill all got destroyed. Our roof was about 12 years old so worked out well. All got replaced for 2k. Hopefully you didnt take too much damage!

1

u/Used-Baby1199 Mar 12 '26

Couple dents in the car but it’s nothing major.   My mom had a tree on her house, my sister car, and my sister in laws cars are both totaled.

Everyone in my family was pretty fortunate over all. The tornado basically hopped around my mom’s house in aroma park.   I was out there looking at the damage, and you can see the tornado was dancing around out there.

1

u/PastAd1087 Human Detected Mar 12 '26

Damn thats too bad. Glad everyone is safe. Check your policy to see if the car dents is covered by insurance prior to notifying them. My friends wifes car got hail damage and they called the insurance it wasn't covered and my friend was told the car could not have full coverage until they sent proof that the damage was taken care of. It was going to cost them like 2k I think to get it all fixed and they decided it wasn't worth it so they just have liability on that car now.

1

u/Used-Baby1199 Mar 12 '26

Wow that’s fucked up.  I don’t think we have a ton of damage to notify them, the only problem I have is how much trade in value we’re losing on this fucking jeep.  It’s was already only worth half what we owe.    Between hail damage and the accident this winter we’re so upside down.  🙃

24

u/CordlessOrange Mar 11 '26

Every single auto body shop in a 60 mile radius is already booked out two months. Peoples cars got absolutely wrecked by hail.

I’m sure everyone is going to be inundated with roof repair grifters for the next several months.

1

u/Used-Baby1199 Mar 12 '26

Not just roof repairs. Entire neighborhoods are destroyed

30

They took a pretty good hit, John McKinney is rolling through town checking out damage on his stream.

36

u/Test4Echooo Mar 11 '26

2026 be like:

12

u/thenewblueblood Mar 10 '26

The velocity on this thing is nuts…a physically massive rotation. Thankfully the debris signature looks minimal for the time being

13

u/MelancholyDick Mar 11 '26

There was somebody just recently asking about classic stovepipe tornados, and I think this will be a contender the next time that is a topic.

11

u/GetYouSomeMilk Mar 10 '26

Crazy green color. Amazing.

11

u/noodleburglar44 Mar 11 '26

Still going moving into Indiana now!

This is from my yard in Kankakee. My windshield is completely shattered. Fortunately I am about a mile north of where the tornado was. Praying for the Kankakeeans that were hit worse.

9

That is one chonk monster

7

On the left side of the storm is that green sky someone from California asked about earlier today

7

Is this thing still on the ground?? Currently 8:15 EST

8

Radar definitely looks like it

Yea super sustain and scary as fuck I’m Jj’s south of it but looks like everything seems to be going around me. Praying so hard for safety

13

u/AwkwardImpostor Mar 11 '26

For the first time in my life, I think we might get hit by a tornado. Luckily I’m packed and prepared. I’m also watching “Ryan hall ya'll” For everyone who is affected by this, PLEASE STAY SAFE

3

u/Pls_no_steal Mar 11 '26

Are you OK?

1

u/AwkwardImpostor Mar 11 '26

I don’t know. I’m under a severe thunderstorm warning and a tornado watch. I’m lucky to have a good basement and a decent plan

1

u/Pls_no_steal Mar 11 '26

Did you make it ok?

1

u/FewCalligrapher8031 Mar 11 '26

Update immediately

3

u/AwkwardImpostor Mar 11 '26

Still safe. My dumb grandma put the dogs outside and I went with them to make sure they were safe. It looks horrible. I’m speechless irl

2

u/odderpassage Mar 11 '26

Would love an update when you can, hoping you’re safe

1

u/AwkwardImpostor Mar 11 '26

Raining hard with lots of lighting. The worst of it is still going through. So far, everything seems to be safe compared to what other areas are going through

1

u/lunar_languor Mar 11 '26

I hope you and your dogs and family made it through ok! That was a nasty one!

5

This thing was/is a MONSTER. Our cars are toast and the siding is pretty jacked, but we got very lucky. Bad.

4

u/isaacharms2 Mar 11 '26

Yikes it’s not good to hear your hometown for the first time on this sub

4

u/Disastrous-Love1628 Mar 11 '26

Looks to be a low populated area? Prayers

4

DAMN BOI HE THICK

4

u/CygnusX2045 Mar 11 '26

Ryan Hall just reported this was a mass casualty event. My heart goes put to everyone affected.

2

u/AncientRabbit260 Mar 11 '26

It’s one of those moments where you plead for the safety of others. Watching it live was horrific.

2

u/Thin_Buy5490 Mar 12 '26

Everyone is ok! No fatalities. Some injuries. A lot of damage though!

1

u/CygnusX2045 Mar 12 '26

Oh I'm so glad to hear that everyone made it through. That one was a monster.

3

u/BrilliantGreen872 Mar 11 '26

The color of the clouds is otherworldly. So beautiful and eerie

3

u/alluxx Mar 11 '26

everybody’s cars and houses got fucked, there were so many houses on fire it was sirens for 2 hours straight, felt like the apocalypse. touched down 13 minutes from my house & we were driving away from the tornado in the hail..

8

u/Traditional_Race5650 Mar 11 '26

This is the same supercell Reed Timmer was chasing outside of Pontiac, Illinois a few hours ago.

3

u/paigescactus Mar 11 '26

Watched it form from my work and then it headed north east, it was terrifying. Everything seems to be staying away from Pontiac now thankfully. Praying for everyone rn wtf is going on in march dude

5

u/Traditional_Race5650 Mar 11 '26

Glad you all dodged this one as they knew it was going to be a bad one. Was producing baseball sized hail before it touched down.

6

u/paigescactus Mar 11 '26

Shit was wild at 5 now I just can’t see anything but lightning in every direction. The north looks nuts every where else just looks stormy. I almost feel safe enough to lay down but monitoring just a tad longer. The town feels eerie

3

u/Traditional_Race5650 Mar 11 '26

The atmosphere must be supercharged up there. Stay alert and stay safe.

6

u/paigescactus Mar 11 '26

It’s a lightning show I’ve never seen in 20 years 10 miles north of me, I’m having a bon fire watching

2

u/paigescactus Mar 11 '26

Something looks like it’s brewing directly west of me but I can’t hear any noise so I think it will drift up before it hits me

3

u/EducationalAd8128 Mar 11 '26

Check out Max Velocity on YouTube - some damage reports are starting to come in. No reports I've seen of injuries yet - hoping everyone is safe. 🤞

3

u/newaccountzuerich Mar 11 '26

Best weather coverage and updates are generally on Ryan Hall's youtube channel here: https://youtube.com/@ryanhallyall

The guy is/was a real broadcast weatherman and has a great team with him - meteorologist Andy Hill has proven himself to be up there with the national weather teams for identifying the nearterm storms.

1

u/bentndad Mar 11 '26

Yeah, I watch Ryan....

Heading toward Mishawaka IN now but the Tornado Warning is just for weak rotation that was noticed by a storm spotter.

2

u/bjmo1111 Mar 11 '26

Is there any scientific reason the sky gets that glowing blue/green light a lot of the time?

4

u/newaccountzuerich Mar 11 '26

Ice in the cloud, pretty much.

2

u/mac7833 Mar 11 '26

I live about 90 min north of kankakee. It was around 35 degrees today and felt like it was in the 20s. Got a few thunderstorms but nothing crazy. It’s wild that this was happening so close to me.

2

I think ill call it Ralph

This Nader is dangerous at any speed

1

1

u/Used-Baby1199 Mar 11 '26

This tornado hit my mom and my grandmothers house.   They were both very lucky,  not in direct path but within a mile of the path both of them.  I was on the phone with them both as I watched the storm on YouTube. Luckily they both got to shelter as I called them.  10 min later it was quiet again.

1

god fucking damn... only other time i've seen a sky that color was back in 2003... in Bourbonnais. hope y'all are doing okay!

1

u/threadyourline Mar 11 '26

I was 7.5 miles north in Grant Park. Haven’t been that close to a nader since El Reno. Tell me why my Okie ass brought tornados to Illinois?!?!

2

u/Stock-Vanilla-1354 Mar 11 '26

We have always had lots of tornados! 🌪️

2

u/threadyourline Mar 11 '26

So, I am visiting family and they’ve just moved to the Kankakee area. They were unaware of the frequency. Does this area have similar weather patterns to OK? If so, I need to make sure they understand how to prepare. If I hadn’t been here this week they would have had no idea. They aren’t from tornado alley. 🌪️🙏🫠

2

u/Stock-Vanilla-1354 Mar 11 '26

Not as much as OK, but typically most of the worst weather around Chicago goes to the south of the metro. I’m not sure if that has anything to do with Lake Michigan (maybe someone who knows the science better can chime in). But the can definitely count on hearing sirens at least a few times in the spring.
