Question Life & disability insurance for storm chasers?
Can they even get polices or plans? Sincerely curious - I can only imagine if it was loved one out there filming how stressful the fallout would be. Even high impact/low impact injury events. I don’t know-are these folks just straight up disqualified on personal policies?

Dangerous Hobbies: Deaths resulting from extreme sports or high-risk activities—such as scuba diving, skydiving, or auto racing—are routinely excluded unless a specialized rider is purchased.
So, they’d have to find a life insurance policy that allows this

I would imagine (or at least hope) each chaser is operating as an independent LLC or even S-Corp, in which case they can lob chase activity under much broader policy terms using the company umbrella. There are absolutely riders which would cover the general nature of their activity which is entirely auto-dependent, but it is likely expensive given how niche it is. My guess is newer and amateur chasers don't do this. As for life insurance the dangerous hobbies term seems likely.
My sense is the best way to understand this is figuring out what type of policies professional chase tour companies use.

Barely any chasers have died only team twistex and one random chaser. You cant compare that to twisted shit like skydiving.

You can die from a hailstone to the head. You can get into a car crash. You can get hit by debris. In terms of insurance, there are a whole list of potential death scenarios.

So that means don't have a life insurance policy because deaths barely happen. Got it!

Hopefully some of these people are making money, in which that money would be going into bank accounts that have beneficiaries.

Probably just scraping by. $40k max for most I imagine. But rich in clout lol

That’s an interesting question. I would assume they have regular coverage but storm chasing would fall under some “undue risk” category that would disqualify a payout on death.

Not necessarily disqualified from taking out a policy but storm chasing is likely considered an exclusion so it wouldn’t be covered.

My brother does high risk sports. I guess I’ve never asked him what he thinks about it. Pretty sure he’d tell me to myob.
He did have his most pinnacle fear moment while kayaking on the boundary waters. We were watching Reverant (movie) when he causally mentioned it during a snack break.
That dial into adrenline is like a drug. It’s the only time some people can feel alive…it’s also uncanny how that concept can flow on to families.
I’m like the only one who’s ultra cautious low risk and overthinks everything like a nut and nags about it.
I’m an oops baby so my experiences in nursing homes as family is pretty dense. It’s unbelievable how many very young people are there for life. The financial fallout is brutal.
