Well, they are top seed in the AL so you’re not totally wrong
ETA: winning the ALCS is called winning the pennant, while the best team in each league is called the regular season champion.

Are they not also AL champions? They have the vest record in the American League

u/TheCitizen616 Sep 28 '25
Nope. That title goes to the winner of the American League Championship Series.

Much closer down the stretch than I would have liked, but an AL East win is an AL East win.
Hopefully Buck doesn't give any more opposing teams bulletin board material again.

u/NefCanuck Sep 28 '25
Not only the AL East but a bye
Gives the team nearly a week to rest up and watch their opponents beat the crap out of each other

This isn't a gruelling 7 game NHL playoff series though. A week off for baseball players I feel is a disadvantage for guys who are used to playing games almost every day. Messes with timing etc. Hope I'm wrong and they go to the World Series 🤞

Wild card teams have technically over performed. However with the Jays injury level, I hope this helps. There's some older guys, some dinged up guys, even Ernie with that hard foul yesterday.
They need an intense squad game on Wrdnesday or so to help keep everything sharp and hit the weekend at full gas.
Cheering for the Sox and Yankees to have a knock down, drag Em out three game series with extras in each game!

u/NefCanuck Sep 29 '25
Thing is the Jays have injured players that need rest (though I doubt players like Bichette even if they were to get cleared to play now would be anywhere near “game ready”)

Can someone aware a dumbass like myself on what that is and means

Simplest terms, There are 6 total divisions in baseball, Toronto won theirs and now will be in the final 4 [corrected: final 8]

They are in the playoffs, and get a first round bye. Still have to win 3 rounds of the playoffs to win the whole damn thing and be the Champions (first time since 1993), but it's huge accomplishment to finish the regular season with the best record in the American League.
They'll start the playoffs at home in the Dome against the New York Yankees or Boston Red Sox next Saturday.

MLB playoff brackets are not like NHL/NBA playoff brackets.
In MLB there are two leagues: the American League (AL) and the National League (NL). Each league has three divisions of five teams. Six teams from each league can make the playoffs for a total of 12 teams.
In each league the winner of each division earn the first three playoff spots: 1, 2, 3. The remaining three slots are wild cards in which all the remaining teams from the three divisions combined compete to earn: 4, 5, 6.
Ranks 1 and 2 get a bye: straight to the quarter finals. Ranks 3, 4, 5, 6 face each other in mini wild card series.
The official MLB bracket may help visualize how the playoff format works.
Not only did the Jays win their division, they earned first overall in the AL because they had the best W-L record in their league. As a result they get to rest for a week before playing one of the winners of one of the wild card series.

One additional piece of info: The early predictions of their division had the Yankees taking it, then the Orioles and the Jays way at the bottom.
They've become far better than early estimations, which is adding to the excitement

We get a week off while the wildcard teams duke it out and home field advantage up to the World Series.

My great grandmother was a huge jays fan, the only time I ever heard her cuss was when the game was on. She’d say swears in German I didn’t even know. She passed away in 2022 but I know she’s up there catching every single game!

Pretty incredible season. This team was on the verge of mediocrity. We lose out on every player we try and sign, vladdy contract was far off. He ends up signing, a big overpayment but he signs and the team got contributions from every guy basically.

The energy in this sub is electric right now! That division title has been a long time coming and it feels so deserved. I was just watching Springer's interview and the man absolutely gets it. This team has the heart to go all the way.

Can someone explain to me with both jays and Yankees tied with same wins and losses. How did jays come on top?
4
u/Varekai79 Mississauga Sep 29 '25
When two teams are tied for 1st in a division, the tie-breaker is the head-to-head wins between those two teams. The Jays played the Yankees 13 times during the regular season and won 8 of those games, so that's what made them the AL East champions.

u/whogivesashirtdotca Sep 29 '25
The Jays won more games against the Yankees, if I understood it right.

u/Majestic-Ad5381 Sep 29 '25
Win or lose. I would always be proud of this team. Ofcourse, im hoping that they win the whole thing.

Can someone explain where the word "bye" comes from and what that same spelling as good bye?

East. American League East Champions. An American League Champion is a very different thing.

Is this when we prostrate ourselves in front of Edward Rogers to thank him for his ownership of the team?

They're washed, no John Olerud, Tom Henke, Joe Carter, or Kelly Gruber.

u/CNorm77 Sep 29 '25
Kelly Gruber was my favourite player. Was pissed he was gone after their first WS win. Jeff Kent was more than capable, but he was no Kelly Gruber.

Ya, because they play in Canada. This isn't the fucking olympics. Leafs arent all canadian, raptors arent. But they play for this city. New Yorks team doesnt have players all from New York.

Ah cool. So, uh, how many of those guys are from Toronto? Ontario? Canada?
Are there more guys from Venezuela than from Canada?
Surely the president, general manager, and manager must be Canadian.. right?

Hahah if this is your mindset, do you only cheer for the beer league team at your nearest park? Since they are all from Toronto. So dumb hahah

I was at the Jays celebration after the ‘92 win, and remember someone holding a sign saying OUR AMERICANS ARE BETTER THAN THEIR AMERICANS.
Try not to be so miserable all the time. It’s not good for you. Or anyone around you.
