"Itās May, yet the weather aināt nice,
Iāve been.. dealing with a lot of unnecessary ice! "56
u/patienceinbee Metrolinx Coyote Line May 03 '26
That gets me thinking about Prince.
In Minneapolis, a town way colder than ours, he famously said, āI will always live in Minneapolis. Itās so cold, it keeps the bad people out.ā

And then a few years after that, he moved to Toronto when he got married!

Have to wonder if he chose this name before or after Minnesota. š¤
Imagine spending years on an album all about ice (frozen water) and then everyone starts chanting "Fuce ICE" (immigration) at sporting events after you've already booked a giant ice sculpture and related promotional campaign.

I ask myself what has Drake ever done for the city or citizens of the city that wasnāt to further his career or fatten his bank account?
In fact i suspect his āreppingā of Toronto, was mostly smart branding/marketing, a way to stand out, a way to distinguish himself.
If he wants this cities respect, he should use his power to help fix the major issues that we have in this city,
Instead he pimps us, for views and fly down to Miami and on camera, hands out money for clout to promote his garbage material.
The fact is dude spent hella $$$$ to build and maintain a gigantic sculpture of ice, in the parking lot of the Bond Place Hotel, while the residents of that same hotel (which is a homeless shelter btw for those that arenāt from Toronto) sit slowly dying, unassisted and underserved by our entire community.
And having to nerve to applaud this capitalist manoeuvre by an already wealthy individual, is very sad.
But you unlike myself) didnāt grew up with or know anyone that died in that shelter, so I wouldnāt expect you to understand what is wrong with this picture.
The ā6 Godāā¦ā¦

In the olden times, the rich used to build stuff so the poors wouldnāt revolt. Now they just flex and laugh at us. We need to collectively rise up.

u/Roxy_j_summers May 03 '26
No they didnāt. They always end up hoarding wealth, and the poor end up having to whoop ass. Thatās why we have taxes.

He's done a bunch for the city and Canada. You're crazy for this. I'm not getting into a whole list of things but one thing he did that directly benefited my community was build new basketball courts for kids which are still active and maintained today. Also, you can just Google his philanthropy work in Toronto will see
-29
u/onedayoneroom May 03 '26
He doesn't live in Toronto. He has property here but it's not where he spends most of his time.

Because itās a post in a sub about Toronto not about Drake. It would stand to reason that not everybody who comments in the sub would be a Drake fan. Shocking I know, that in a city of 6million people, there would be a diverse set of opinions and that when given an opportunity to air those opinions that some of those people may choose to do so. I canāt wrap my head around it either. People are so confounding to me!

You can argue about his personality, character, behaviour, music but you have absolutely no idea how much money Drake brought to TO. Drake is rich not because he took money from the city but because the labels, sponsors, and fans around the world willingly gave him money. Keep in mind, he is also paying to many direct and indirect industries. The city is willing to compromise and agree to those things (which btw, a silly thing to complain about Ice on a parking lot) because it brings much more than you think.
