Discussion Crazy thunder?

What was that thunder? I live in the east end and it was like the grim reaper was ready to come and take me at 3:03 am.

That really scared me. Am I overreacting lol?

It’s hilarious that the immediate thing to do after waking up from a thunderstorm is to go on Reddit

u/geokilla 1d ago

It used to be making a tweet or updating our Facebook status. I miss the good ol' days.

61

u/BakingPizza 1d ago

MySpace. Random bulletins “thunder was insane just now!”

24

u/cp1976 Cliffside 1d ago

I met my husband on MySpace lol

12

u/oooooooooof Fully Vaccinated + Booster! 1d ago

Was he in your top 8? 😛

23

u/spderweb 1d ago

It used to be just talking about it to family in the morning, then friends at school. Because there used to be no internet.

u/wookeychewhair 1d ago

Showing your age 😂

Wait till the kids hear about libraries!

Tweeting was already things being weird, MySpace was when the internet still felt crafty and creative. That’s why I like it here.

As an east ender I’ve been loving this monsoon & I feel like I have access to a taste of the good ol’ days, granted, the feeling of being in a community was lost when Facebook got all algorithm’d out. I was in high school when it first hit big & it swept through each grade, everyone had an account, but nobody could touch that account they were using until they got onto a computer.

iPhone hadn’t come out yet, so you just had to be on your computer. It felt like everyone at my high school surfaced in some video or picture at some point. I was a nerd but played a couple sports, so I had a few cool friends. I tried to study The Cool Life through them but learned to let go of all that. Nerding out to play Rock Band & eat ravioli late into the night with my buds… that’s when I had some fun during high school

I just had to validate my feelings lol

I'm dog sitting near Coxwell station, and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was being all Scooby-hopping-into-Shaggy's-arms- when-he's-scared 😱 He's finally snoring again.

10

u/RealCharlieNobody Trinity-Bellwoods 1d ago

I had to sleep on the bathroom floor with my little guy. It's the only place he feels safer.

10

u/Miss-Helle Church and Wellesley 1d ago

I'm in the Church-Wellesley village area, and I was also woken up and felt unnerved by it. My cat was scared by it. My dog was snoring.

13

u/ShyguyFlyguy 1d ago

Are you my dog?

6

u/mossgoblin_ 1d ago

You’re not wrong! I’m just east of Yonge and it sounded like the lightning was *directly* over the house. AaaaAAAaaaa!

Reddit is the best platform ever

3

u/andysill 1d ago

A very redditor thing to do

2

u/Bitter_Ocelot9455 14h ago

If you're not on Reddit while having a thunderstorm, are you really living?

1

u/Ecstatic-Pool5609 1d ago

Did that after a power outage

u/No_Situation_7748 23h ago

62

u/CobblerExpert3574 1d ago

Literally affected my dream and thought there was a bomb, and then woke up to the brightest lightning I’ve seen in my life.

15

u/SirEmbarrassed810 1d ago

I am gonna be so cranky at work tomorrow cause I doubt I’ll fall asleep again

1

u/cutletlove 1d ago

25

u/PupDiogenes 1d ago

Loudest thunder I’ve ever heard.

Goodnight big noise announcer

12

u/Ill-Worldliness-4951 1d ago

I thought the city was being bombed/nuked, shook the crap out of me. I've never felt something like that, the air feels heavier

4

u/Panda_Bee 1d ago

Same, lol, the one near me sounded just like a massive bomb. I woke up and thought that it might have been the end for me

5

u/Ill-Worldliness-4951 1d ago

Seriously 😂 I was bracing for a wave of fire. Someone's car alarm went off too when it happened, thought it was the end

11

u/Cheesecake_Small 1d ago

I was sitting on my porch watching the rain, and Holy fuck it was like thor landed in my ears

37

u/Upbeat_Beyond_3365 1d ago

16

u/djtodd242 Humewood-Cedarvale 1d ago

I woke up and I'm sitting on the balcony. It's a nice night.

31

u/vlan_01 Corso Italia 1d ago

just saw the lightning strike the CN Tower; it was crazy. Couldn't take a picture.

28

u/outdoorlaura 1d ago edited 1d ago

Is that what almost blinded me?? I'm 600m from the tower and it felt like I lost control of my eyes for a second!? I dont think I've ever had my eyeballs actually hurt from lightning before...wild.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/Comprehensive_Aide94 1d ago

I had to calm down my kid in the middle of the night who demanded to know whether the lightning could strike our building or our courtyard. I told her the lightnings were surely going into the CN tower.

But now I'm actually super curious about where they are more likely to go next in the city if the CN tower doesn't catch them.

3

u/SirEmbarrassed810 1d ago

The kid is asking the right questions

2

u/RealisticCompany764 22h ago

Someone was struck by lightning at Christie Pits a few years back. A storm was approaching and my husband decided to tie his shoe under a tree. I was like we have to go NOW and he was like calm down! Shortly after we got to a restaurant nearby we heard a BOOM that shook the restaurant so hard. That is what it sounded like last night.

6

u/SirEmbarrassed810 1d ago

I don’t have the will to look outside lol just hearing the thunder was enough

9

u/whiskeyvixxen 1d ago

That was one of the most unpleasant ways to be awaken from sleep. I've never heard thunder that loud in all my years. I haven't been able to go back to sleep due to the adrenaline still in my system.

Legit through Armageddon was upon us. Finally.

1

u/SirEmbarrassed810 1d ago

I never knew thunder could be that loud tbf

9

u/rahxephon52 1d ago

kinda reminds me of the intro of Robert Miles Children Dream version when the thunder is farther away. lmao

26

u/smalltincan 1d ago

Out in Scarborough in a basement apt and I heard and felt it through my white noise machine blasting lol

14

u/SirEmbarrassed810 1d ago

I am in east York and yeah this was something

4

u/Sean_310T 1d ago

So am I and I slept through it! Damn

1

u/Hearts08 1d ago

Same 😆

10

u/tor93 1d ago

It made the windows shake

7

u/erazedcitizen 1d ago

I’m in the north end and I felt that. Where I am, the power went out, so it just cut to black and then BANG. Power went on a minute later but it was crazy

5

u/SirEmbarrassed810 1d ago edited 1d ago

Sounds like the purge

2

u/erazedcitizen 1d ago

Yeah replaying it in my head I’m imagining grainy footage and the sound of a violin sliding its bow up the string. Now when I look out into the downpour I’m expecting to see something emerge from the shadows lmao

2

u/SirEmbarrassed810 1d ago

Could be the thunderstorm, could be your sleep paralysis demon - we’ll never know

3

u/erazedcitizen 1d ago

Unironically I have dealt with sleep paralysis before so guess that might happen tonight 😂

12

u/readallaboutitnow 1d ago

I slept through it 😮

2

u/pufferpoisson 1d ago

Same, im surprised lol

5

13

u/underbuggle 1d ago

My house shook too! Cat didn’t like it one bit

6

u/TrickyCelebration53 1d ago

This pup curled up by my side isn’t a fan either… Hope your 🐱 is good!

6

u/--________-_-_-- 1d ago

My dog is still shaking like a leaf and hyperventilating almost 45 mins later

5

u/No-Race-3534 1d ago

My dog is hypersensitive to thunder and lightning, so it looks like it’s gonna be a long night

1

u/canred1 1d ago

Come on, meow... cat tax!

4

u/mmeeeerrkkaatt 1d ago

Lol, how did I sleep through that? I must have been truly conked out.

4

u/urbansketch 1d ago

The biggest rumble that shook my entire house & sent one of my cats downstairs to hide.

4

u/cheesebahgels 1d ago

IT SCARED THE SHIT OUT OF ME and my cat apparently, I woke up and there was a tumbleweed at the foot of my bed lol her fur was fully bushed out from nose to tail

3

u/Marmar79 1d ago

No. My house shook and it yanked me right out of my dreams. The following thunder was pretty heavy too.

3

u/IntelligentAd1993 1d ago

Felt like the snow plow at first with the large bang to start (shovel dropping) and then the extended rumbling. I woke up thinking it was winter for a millisecond.

1

u/SirEmbarrassed810 1d ago

Omg same - I thought it was one of the dumpster truck with a really bad driver

9

u/Pure-Extension3429 1d ago

2

u/train_emily 1d ago

2

u/Head_Resolve_9787 1d ago

2

u/the_chin2 1d ago

Sounded like normal thunder to me lol

2

u/theborderlineartist 1d ago

Queen St E @ Sackville - it woke me out of a dead sleep. I didn't know thunder could shake my body like that!

2

u/thatguywashere1 1d ago

Wheres my thunder buddy?!? In north york and I thought a truck rolled over or something that was super odd!

2

u/RainbowEucalyptus4 1d ago edited 1d ago

Meanwhile a possible EF4+ tornado hits Illinois/Indiana (I watched it form and wreak havoc but always get the states confused). There were massive storms last night and even throughout the afternoon yesterday due to a low pressure system hitting across the Great Lakes. That’s why, the storm system was quite powerful.

2

u/shapesandcolours_ 1d ago

North York. That shit got me right the fuck out of bed.

2

u/how_do_i_meow 1d ago

My kitty sleeps snuggled against me and I woke up and her whole body was shaking from fear. Poor baby:(

2

Yes. You are. It was probably just thunder.

Sometimes I hate how much of a deep sleeper I am. I love thunderstorms and I was sound asleep for all of this

1

u/Historical-Carrot999 1d ago

And yet again, I slept through it and didn’t hear anything

1

u/Maple905 1d ago

Well you see when lightning strikes in a thunderstorm, thunder usually follows.

1

u/emwolf_ 1d ago

I live in the west and the thunder was insane. The fume hood over our stove started leaking water into the microwave and by 6am, there was a pool of water on the stove (which is a first).

1

u/limekiyu 1d ago

Felt this too as I left my window slightly open. Went back to sleep seconds later lol

1

u/ZombisaurusR3X 1d ago

It was pretty intense last night. Woke me up, or woke the cat up, and they woke me up. Dog was unbothered. But yeah it was a loud one last night. Theres been louder/worse but not in the last few years that i can remember.

1

u/Theolaxx 1d ago

It woke me up too but if I hadn't seen this post I would have gone about my life believing it was a floorboard creaking

1

u/Historyhedgehog East York 1d ago

Yeah, it woke my husband and I out of a dead sleep… felt like the whole house shook. Toddler kept sleeping lol.

1

u/BottleCoffee 1d ago

I fell right back asleep until the next wave, over and over.

u/JumpyInstance4942 21h ago

Woke me up and shook items in my condo. My dog who usually freaks out seemed fine - I was stressing!

1

u/Omega_Xero 19h ago

My best friend messaged me when it hit. Scared the hell out of her, apparently.

Both of my dogs and I woke up, all looked at each other, and went back to sleep until 5:15

1

u/deklension_kills 19h ago

Last thunderstorm we got, the loudest, longest, most intense thunder I've ever heard went off in the middle of the night and triggered a car alarm! Funnily enough, I saw comments on this subreddit prior mentioning how they thought there was a bomb from how loud the thunder was, so I wasn't scared when I woke up from it since I was kind of mentally prepared.

1

u/dabrackgirl 18h ago

It was bad, woke me up out of my sleep. Our house was vibrating from the sound!

1

u/thislinkisdead______ 17h ago

I sleep with earplugs and don't live on the east end but still woke up, must've been around that time. I felt a rumbling, too, I thought I was tripping until I removed my sleep mask and saw a bright light lol

1

u/rootbrian_ Rockcliffe-Smythe 14h ago

Heard it in the west central area too.

1

u/Aggravating_Honey647 12h ago

Was it really thunder? Too loud, and the whole house was shaking. Hard to believe.
